Right now I am currently switching between a Defiant Retro and a Chimera Destroyer. I really enjoy both ships as they offer different styles of gameplay. Now let's get to the main question here.
I have one FSM in my bank which is enough to get the Fleet Chimera once we hit Tier II in the spire. The Fleet Defiant is 4 FSM. Is it worth using the FSM towards the Chimera once I get the chance or should I wait for the Defiant?
I want to state that I do again understand that its all up to how you want to play the game. I am more here to ask for people opinions.
Chimera, it's the only one of it's class in game currently... a destroyer.

I love the Chimera, but it makes me miss my cloaking device. My Fleet Defiant has more consoles, and I end up using the BO slots exactly the same. So, the Chimera is relegated to "farmer alt" status.
I'm also fond of the Romulan vet ship, and I expect to like the Klingon version just as well. The fact that they have cloaks will make them my go-to endgame vessels for those factions.
If you're going to stick with Phaser-type weapons, and are going to have Phaser modules, then go with the Chimera. It's very fun to fly, and a fully powered Phaser Lotus absolutely wrecks things. I also recommend the Elite Fleet Phasers for additional shield-heals to really capitalize on the Chimera's tough nature.
If you're going to switch to Antiproton, you'll get more out of the Defiant, since you aren't saddled with the Phaser Lotus. The Defiant also comes with an additonal tactical console, so you'll do more damage with a straight-forward cannon setup.
Both ships are very nice, you'll be very well off no matter what you do. But in my experience, the Chimera takes more effort to make work.

All kidding aside, both ships are good, thought the Chimera is definitely the more flexible of the two ships.
Well, there's the Aquarius Destroyer.:D
In any case, destroyer class has been around for a long time in sto, Scourage, Grumba, etc, are all in the destroyer class. Destroyer class in sto is not actually heavier than escort class. It's basically the same.
Ever since the vet reward "heavy destroyers" came out, people have been thinking of destroyer as midway between escort and cruiser for some reason. Cryptic referred to them as "heavy destroyer" instead of just "destroyer," but people missed the "heavy.";)
It's gotten so bad that some players started to refer to the Breen Cruiser as a destroyer, when it has the weight/inertia of a cruiser, and nowhere in or out of game has Cryptic called it a "destroyer." In game, Cryptic has only referred to it as either "cruiser" or just "warship."
Chimera being a "heavy destroyer" is pretty much the same as a "heavy escort." The handling is closest to that of the Armitage, a heavy escort.
Having flown the Chimera for 3 months (I really REALLY wanted to give it a chance), I ended up using my then-stock 9-console Defiant in the end anyways.
The Aquarius was even more fragile than the Chimera.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
So the Aquarius Destroyer would not be a solid option as well then?
No. I don't know that I've ever actually seen an Aquarius in the game. It's a lot like the Fleet Defiant, only worse. It has slightly better shields and that's all. Much squishier hull, 1 fewer weapon slot, 4 tactical console slots compared to 5 so it has less bite. It does have 2 universal boff slots, 1 LT and one ENS, but you're going to be using that LT for Science anyway so that's a "fake" uni slot. All this for the low LOW price of 200k FC! Most people consider the Aquarius sort of a joke.

I really appriciate all the feedback I have been getting. I am going to give the Chimera a go for a while and see how that fairs.
It depends on whether you're into that kind of thing. It has low hull, plus extreme maneuverability and high evasion. More like a lighter bop without cloak, but with more firepower. There are people who swear by it in pvp. But for most it's just hard to fly without dying.
Of the two options specified, I would opt for the Defiant. I've got both ships, but I prefer the Defiant compared to the Chimera.
I do use both on a regular basis, but the Chimera I use for when I need the defenses it has, however I prefer the offensiveness of the Defiant (coupled with the cloak)...
If we were to pick other ships, I would opt for the Prometheus Class Advanced Escort (or MVAP/Fleet Advanced Escort), as it's a combination/middle ground of the two. I'm currently using a FAE as my main ship.

Different in that the one ensign Tac becomes an ensign universal, which I still use for a Tac ability. "Better" depends entirely on your usage.
What about the Mobius temporal destroyer?

Aren't you forgetting the Lt.Cmd. Universal?
Anyway, it comes down to:
Defiant = Pure Damage
Chimera = Incredible flexibility
