i absolutly love defiant class for its manuverability and options during gameplay... however it gets one shotted at times....

however the od class has more survivability with more throughput on damage...

so should i run the defiant anyways since its my baby? or switch back to OD class even though i enjoy it far less? hate its turn radius even with decent console....

please answer in thread your opinions =)

THANKS!

suggestions are welcome as well!

Well its 2 different playstyles so it all depends really on what you want.

With the fleet RCS consoles its not terrible, but I frankly could never stand the turn on a dime movement of a Defiant myself.

I would go cruiser myself, but thats because I prefer that.

Fly what you enjoy...sounds like you like escorts, why not get something that has some more heals/tank but is still super speedy?

You can make a Defiant pretty durable with the right build.

Of course, the more you deviate from "escorts are for Tacs and DEE PEE ESS," the more the self-appointed arbiters of elitism will disqualify your build as unworthy.

Defiant cannot be described as "durable" on any build.

Compromise between the two. The Breen cruiser they gave out for free last year as well as recently fits the bill. Mostly tac BOs with 4 tac consoles, 14 base turn rate, but suffers much higher inertia from mass. You keep the dps and turn rate of Defiant that you liked, but also get more survivability.

I guess we would have to define the terms before that could be argued. Maybe "survivable" would be a better choice of words, but I was not claiming it could be made as tanky as a frigging Odyssey.

You are comparing apple to a... watermelon. :)

An escort's defense is mostly the act of moving fast, it's even in the base mechanics of the game. A cruiser moves slow so the hull needs to be thicker and therefore can take more damage.

There are really a bunch of things involved in survivability. Make sure that the Shield power is as high as possible, add shield consoles, alloy and armor consoles, character skills, have Shield and/or hull healing abilities and... move faster.

"Survivable" for the Defiant involves being on the move and run away after a short while. For the most part, it's only relevant in pvp instead of pve that makes up almost the entirety of activity in STO. And if OP is considering the Oddy and stressing dps, he's obviously not looking for the type of survivability that involves not applying dps meanwhile.

I adore my Odyssey, but its so remarkably different from escorts they doesn't really compare. Plus lots of people are just good with one style and bad with the other. If you haven't yet flown cruisers, I'd seriously suggest go hit the exchange and buy a Mirror Universe Assault Cruiser for fairly cheap and take it for a spin. All the survivability in the world is worthless if you hate how it flies.

I'm a cruiser guy. unfortunately for my DPS I fly them like escorts (bow on target) that said, I really enjoy flying the Odd-Ball. it has the extra lt tac boff slot so it is more flexible than the regent. with the dyson sig dampener+turn and a RCS console, + the turn cruiser command, USS John Carter turns very well, at least as well as the regent maybe approaching the excelsior.

if you really need to turn and burn crack the chevron and you are turning better than sci ships, and with the three consoles, the chevron will lob grav wells. launch the work bees to help keep the Chevron alive and it makes a decent pet.

I really actually like the new avenger class. it's sort of the best of both worlds between the defiant escort type maneuverability and canon equip, and the oddy's cruiser stats with better than escort hull hp and cruiser commands

There is such a thing as too much turn.

My Vette and my Defiant go so fast its ludicrous. But my Oddy is rather quick for a space whale.

Plus drifting in the Oddy and other ships is rather fun

I'd take a cruiser over an escort any day, so this decision would be easy for me.

As I tell everyone, fly your favorite ship and make it work. I'll admit the defiant isn't exactly a tank, I've seen this first hand in a 1v1 against 1. But regardless, there is a way to make it more powerful and last longer in a fight. You just need to work at it. Trial and error. You may find that your fighting style isn't the best for that ship. I think its made as a hit and run type, decloaking, unleasing everything, and zipping out to go again.

I fly one as an Eng, with the trait that gives you a chance to quickly reset Miracle Worker, and a Doff that gives me a chance to clear all debuffs when I hit EPtS. If that's not enough, there's my Evasive Maneuvers + Subspace Field Modulator defense combo. If that's not enough, there's my trusty Impulse Capacitance Cell console + Quantum Singularity Manipulation. This is of course all if my decloaking alpha doesn't do the trick.

No, I can't get near the damage of a Tac in the same ship, but I have otherwise gone to great lengths to make the best of my zombie Engscort. Cooldown doffs, all attack-related rep passives, advanced fleet weapons, a few attack-related set bonuses, +% crit consoles. It's really not terrible. Currently grinding my fleet dilithium holding up so I can buy those +% turn neutronium consoles.

But most importantly, I get to fly the ship I like as I believe it should perform. The Defiant was supposed to take a beating.

Defiants can hold their own. i RARELY die in an STF and can usually do entire sides of khitomer alone. It's not hard at all. Really though, depends on what YOU like. Fly whatever barge floats your boat.
