So today I hit my ship slot limit. I didn't know there was one. Evidently the magic number is 38. Does STO seriously want me to stop spending Zen on ship slots? It's not like my massive dry dock is hurting anyone.
Please remove this limit! With all the new ships constantly coming out I am not going to delete a rare ship that took quite a bit of effort to get and properly outfit.
How about discharging the ones you don't use? Its not like you can't rebuy c-store ships for free. Save your build on the skill planner, and save your equipment in your bank. Surely you don't use 38 ships.
I collect ships, the different ships are what I like in the game. I'm already at the point where they are either Fleet or rare ones from events, boxes, or lobi. The c-store one's I dumped long ago. I like to have ships outfitted with different weapons selections that I can grab at any point and go play. I do use them, especially when our fleet has group theme nights for fun.

Actually, if you consider the properties of a ship, its equipment and weapons, and all the consumables that it carries, you're talking about quite a bit of data. And when this gets multiplied by tens of thousands of accounts, each with multiple characters, you're talking about something that can easily become unmanageable...

The only other option I can think of would be to create another character and give them your unopened ships if possible. I doubt the limit will be removed. There has to be a limit otherwise the game would overload with so many ships.

And when this gets multiplied by tens of thousands of accounts, each with multiple characters, you're talking about something that can easily become unmanageable...
Data storage these days costs next to nothing. ...and besides that's what I'm paying for.
There are 23 ships alone that are cross-faction special (which I have most of) then add a few Fleet ships and a couple unique ones from the main faction list and it is very easy to get to max.
The thing that is keeping me from getting all the lockbox/lobi/promo ships is the limit. Up that limit Cryptic, you did it with doffs, keep on going. More doff slots would be good too btw. Never can have enough of those.
Sorry, I should have said in my subsequent post that I got rid of my Zen ships that were junk, there are a couple I still fly for fleet special events (like TOS or TNG theme nights) or are pending an upgrade to Fleet version...and yes, I have a lot of special shuttles but then my fleet also started Shuttle Wars and we still do that every now and then and I like to mix it up. A full roster of ships takes multiple screen shots, I might bother with that later but I have nothing to prove, I know what I have and all these ships serve a purpose for me. That said and for your satisfaction, below is the list of ships I have on my main character.
The point remains that I have good ships I want to keep and an increased dry dock would allow me to keep building. If I'm willing to pay for the slots, I should be able to do so and that's all I'm asking for here...after all this is a forum for feedback. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there collecting ships.
As to the point of server resources for shipyard slots, having people create additional characters (and all the database references that come with that) to get around it is much more resource intense than allowing for additional ship slots. It also isn't like the shipyard gets accessed every time you warp/beam in somewhere...so the overhead should be really low in the scheme of things (I'm not arguing that there is no overhead, only that it is negligible and they are compensated for it). I do have other characters that I have been pushing other ships to, (for example, I put the mirror ships on my characters of the relative class). I also have KDF and ROM characters collecting faction specific ships. That said, they are just alts, it's my main character I like to play and really work on.
I should also note that not all c-store ships can be re-obtained without a repeat zen expenditure. This may just be a bug but it happens often and therefore, how much can you really trust dropping paid for ships? Example, I have already purchased the Exploration Cruiser Retrofit but when dropping it I have to pay the Zen all over again. Same happened to me with the Exeter ship. There were others but they seem to come and go with different patch releases.

But real time access to data storage is problematic... unless your accessing it from system RAM...
Except that the only place where you access them all is at the ship selector on a ground map. At that point, changing the active ship and the equipment on them is simply a matter of changing the code values (sorry I don't remember the correct terminology, it has been over ten years since I last worked with Visual Basic). In that regard, it is much like using a game shark for a PS one, or the giveitem/givefeat command from Neverwinter Nights 2. It don't see that as being very much different that rearranging one's inventory.
We can't even change the hull configurations of our inactive ships without first going to the ship selector to make it the active ship. And that is a real pain going back and forth to modify the ships in our inactive inventory.
To the OP's point I do think the upper limit needs to be increased. Since we can now have both an active shuttle and an active capital ship, maybe it is time to have separate lists and limits for shuttles and ships.
Three of your ships you could retire and just break out from the c-store when the theme night comes up again.

Total to store a ship, then, could be as low as say 64 bytes (allowing several more fields (gotta store the name, and probably a few other things). If it saves the BO and hotbar settings too, maybe 100 bytes or so.
To put in in perspective, I could probably store the ships for every player in the game on my decade+ old thumb drive which has 128 MB of space, and that is uncompressed. Compressed, its probably 1/10th of that.

Reordered your list some, so that I could illustrate a count of the "completely irreplacable" ships...
20 ships that can't be reclaimed out of 38. 4 more that plans call to be made irreplacable. Still, not a complete "lockout" of your ship list...
Question 1: What kind of gear do you have on your 5 "theme night" ships? Bank-bait? Something that can be pulled off of a "main" ship for the night in question?
Question 2: How often do you do those "theme nights"? Tying 5 ship slots for ships that won't see the light of day but once a month or so might not be the swiftest move in the batch...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I have the same issue, all 38 of my ships are either lockbox or fleet variants with the exception of two that I will get soon from the spire. So.....yes we need more slots! I brought this up a couple months back actually.
Update: Season 8.5 Equipping ships also gets easier with the new ?easy equip? feature coming in the update. In addition, we?re going to be increasing the current ship slot limit. You?re going to love it!
The limit for storing ships is purely a programming choice, not a limit enforced by memory etc.
(Just thinking - how does 30+ ships display ingame? Is there a limit to the number of database calls that can be displayed in that interface? Would the additional calls impact performance? Operational costs?)
The cost to Cryptic isn't minor; change to the code of this type (especially something that will impact every player) will require significant testing as it 'could' impact users negatively. Lets say the change inadvertently reduces the number of ships.... you get the idea. And you can't roll back something that significant without downtime... more money lost.
The real question is what percentage of players will this ultimately affect. If the cost of the change only helps less than 1% of users, would that time be better spent on another issue that could generate more money or reduce other more significant issues which impact a larger percentage of players?

Good cause I'm having deleting fleet and C-ships in order to collect the more rare ones. I've own every C-ship but cant have them all at once currently. Plus I've owned every Fleet vessel at one point or another. It would be nice to get them all again. The ones that would be hardest for me to replace would be my:
"Being a troll myself, I classify this malcontent as a Type-2 Oblivious Troll. My reasons for coming to this conclusion are: The annoying colored text he deploys, the contradictory threads he creates, the excessive whining and foot stamping, the amusement factor of his threads, and the apparent lack of realization that he is in fact a troll, like me, and is not the heart broken, victimized, player, he sees himself as."
