Step 5: Get your feet wet without immediately drowning.
Enjoy.
Sarcasm aside, I have recently tried this approach. And I have to admit that flying an escort is not as easy as one might think. I miss the high shield mod of a sci ship, and being highly maneuverable is not always a blessing, especially when you have such a narrow weapon arc to keep your targets in.
Science for the win. / Czechoslovak Fleet 1st Division
4) Ships suddenly taking off like a bat out of hell and they never EVER stop and go right on fighting. At first I thought it was evasive maneuvers but the length of time they became extra fast and nimble was way longer than what EM provides. I asked and my fleetmates said it was likely Aux2batt builds
this made my LOL. oh, dudes goin hyper fast and stuff. ya that sounds like BS, must be AtB lol
EPtE, a high impulse mod, and about 125 engine energy was what did that. evasive doffs can make that useible quite often, and APO up time is pretty high too. oh and of course theres AtD, which can be on most of the time with 1 copy, or all the time with a bunch of overlap with 2 copies. with high aux that will really keep ya movin
Everyone here makes very good points, however, first and foremost to stop alpha strikers you need experience and reaction time. As regulus said about the rsp. Rsp won't always save you even if the person doesn't have BO doffs but a combination of Tac team and a simple shield buff will stop just about anything. As for simple survivability you want to NOT OVERDUE UNI CONSOLES, slap some Neutronium's and some Field generators on. Also fleet shields with the assimilated 2 piece will make you hard to kill. Lastly rotate your shield facings and keep them distributed with constant rotation of epts and Tac team as needed.

Edit: Ships do not make the player, the player makes the ship.
NO there doesn't need to be a seperate que at all.
I would be in favor of seeing the ques destroyed as they exist though and have cryptic Tyler Durden them on auto mode... but that would involve them doing a back end behind the scenes score keeping something like what hilbert has been doing with his leader board.
An auto tyler style que would be great for PvP.
Honestly though the people that complain about premades now would mostly just find something new to complain about. Premades are not really an issue... its people stomping there feet anytime they see 2 fleet tags that match on the other side.
As a new player honestly if you run into premades... reach out to them and humbly ask them for some advice... as others have mentioned this game is going on 4 years old and some of those premades have existed that long... others are filled with players that have played with each other for that long as well... heck some even have people in them that played similer games before this one. Experience isn't some evil thing... ask those people when you run into them to help you and you may find yourself playing with those premades at some point.
Yes they do need to separate the q. There's nothing to learn from taking a pug stomping. There's no reason to take part in matches that are pugs against pre mades.
Pre mades are the biggest issue of pvp in STO. The only reason to think that it's ok to have the q the way it is, is because you really enjoy stomping pugs. Stomping pugs does not encourage pvp, it doesn't lead to more people pvping, it leads to people not pvping.
If you run into a pre made, either leave or go afk and refuse to take part in such a match. It will save you the frustration of a pointless match that you stand zero chance in doing much of anything in.

I haven't been in a qued game in a long time my friend... look at the sig. I founded it. Join it and pew away. I am not there myself often anymore either... they are running TD rule games pretty much every night though. Jump in and enjoy pvp it seems you need to be debittered.

and i might face a premade 1/20 times while queueing up solo.
i just dont see where some people are coming from with this.

I just meant that the above steps will help broaden the learning curve and the better you get, all the better you will be with the best gear and some skill to boot. Being highly maneuverable is always a blessing because it not only allows you to keep your targets within your weapon arc but also gives you insane dodge capability.
Otherwise, you could be doing everything right and still be scratching your head as you still get stomped by power creep and wonder why that focuss-fired escort is just dancing around, barely taking damage yet not even have to get out of combat range.

Step 2: Buy Yourself into a Tier 5 fleet
Step 3: Get a Fleet or Lockbox Ship and Consoles
Step 4: Get some purple Doffs with build synergy.
Step 5: Get your feet wet without immediately drowning.
Enjoy.
