Map re-design

Should Cryptic make a new map window? The way imagine it would be with a cursor that works like the rig that a claw machine's arm is attached to when seen from above, you know what I mean right?

I think he means something that looks like a drafting plotter or an old-school movie-style automatic nautical map position marker display thing.

Sadly, I can't find an example of one on Google and I can't remember a specific movie that used it.

He wants his position to be marked with what is essentially a crosshair whose lines extend to the edges of the map at all times, but doesn't stay in the center of the screen.

Best example I could find, even though it is rather poor: http://www.jacmp.org/index.php/jacmp/article/viewFile/2930/1666/21325

You know how the dot from Pong(tm) moved, now picture the mouse symbol passing over the map and becoming a little box just bigger then the planet or starbase symbols with four lines sticking out from each side.

I think he means something like this cursor:

    over this kind of map:

or at least that's what I want it to look like too.

i think i've seen similar art like that in the different faction homebases, in the romulan command center especially i've seen a VERY similar display where it cycles through a set of coordinates using a cross hair

Taco, can you back me up on this? unless i'm being more delusional than usual

Id love them to do something with the map, the current one is ugly and unwieldy; id like to be able to zoom in see more details - and on the sector space map, wouldn't it be cool if you didn't have to scroll around the window like some badly sized image to find the "exit", points to the next sector block?

The map hasn't really changed since launch, it was bad then, its bad now.
(shame cause the rest of the game seems in fairly good shape).

Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

That would be awesome. Would look much cleaner and most importantly "trekkier" than the current ugly and confusing sector block maps...

Why not combine the sector block maps? Doesn't mean the sector blocks themselves have to be combined (at this point of time), just piece together all the individual sector block maps with the artwork outlined in the above links.

    I still don't fully understand. . .

You want an extraneous cursor, over the map, that is kind of like a cross hair that extends to the edges of the map, centered on what? (Your ship? Your Cursor?)

    For what purpose?

And adding this extra bit of clutter will somehow make things "cleaner?"

Forgive me, I'm just not sure I get it.

My inference is a slightly more zoomed out map with a more LCARS visual theme/background image..

Personally, it seems like a nice touch on an immersion level(kind of reminds me some of old/DOS-era trek games and the sim mode from Starship Creator), but I don't know if it's entirely needed. Sector Space is already a bit of an abstraction(how does traveling at warp in reverse work?).

HMM, that actually sounds interesting...maybe it's because I'm old enough to know those good'ol DOS games myself. I remember at least one that used a system of coordinates for navigation.
And given we know how maps look like when other races' LCARS displays them

    http://imageshack.us/a/img52/3766/wallmapcloseup.png

something similar for them should also be possible.

As for warp in reverse: that's actually pretty simple. The catpain orders the helmsman to hit reverse.:)
Seriously: there have been instances where this was done in canon Trek too like in "Balance of Terror". Given that the TNGTM explains that warp travel works by "ingniting" warp coils in the nacelles in sequence reverse probably just meanse reversing the sequence.

Yeah I don't understand the OP's idea either, but it would be nice if we could get a 3-d map. Some objectives are hard to find in 2-d. :(

I see no reason for this when there are so many other map things that could be addressed like where is the trill home world, or let us go to betazed, or solar systems.

The map in its current form is plain and dull, with no sense of LCARS whatsoever. It seems like a random fan-made image pasted into an empty window, and has no interaction or animation at all.

You can never have enough LCARS "clutter", as you call it, and this game definitely does not have enough.

And the purpose? I thought it would be obvious. Immersion.

Centered on the players cursor, yeah. The purpose would have been for appearance mostly, I figured with the sphere finished, you had more free time, but it sounds like you aren't able to do that, correct?

I wasn't saying anything about it being done or not, I was just confused on what the request was.

We never have more free time. As soon as we're done wit one thing, we're working on the next.

And the job you've done on S8 is AWESOME! As an active STOWiki author, who is involved in kinda cataloging all the new content, I think I have a good impression about how much work you guys and girls put into it!

Wrt a new map art: Cross-hair cursor? Maybe.. I see you point Taco. Make it look closer to the IP (wall graphics, LCARS maps etc...) YES! Please! Although 2D-artwork like that might sound like a piece of cake to a lot of people, I know it can still be an involved, lengthy process whose justification has to be clear.

Replacing the ugly untrekky LCARS textures on all FED computers was a great 1st step! In time, replacing the ingame map artwork would be a logical 2nd one.

So all those promises with regards to "We'll do pvp when we have some free time" are the same, eh?

    Figures.

I know, I know, just annoyed of the meaningless platitudes.
