The recent generosity of Cryptic

vamankvamank Member Posts: 366 Arc User
I would like to say that I am grateful for how generous cryptic has been. The Risa Event, end of summer give aways, lobi discounts on ships, account bound lobi, the CE event and now free lobi with the rerun missions.

There are multiple people that just wont be satisfied no matter what. I believe cryptic has been addressing the community's concerns as fast as they can while they develop free new content.

I would like everyone to remember that is a free game and recently I believe cryptic has really been listening to the community and has been very generous as of late. I would be the first to criticize Cryptic but I honestly believe they have been moving in a positive direction. You can't make everyone happy at once and give everyone everything they want. It just doesnt work that way.

As a thank you to Cryptic and to help support the game myself and a handful of people in my fleet plan to open close to a hundred boxes over the next couple of weeks.

And don't forget the free carrier that comes with the Sphere of Influence mission, along with one of two specialized parts that can be applied to other craft (LCDR Burwell is currently rocking that 360-degree Anti-Proton Array in place of the Disruptor Turret that used to adorn the aft end of the USS Vasco da Gama). I have no idea how it compares to other carriers, as I generally don't buy ships, but it doesn't matter, because it's free! :)

I have to agree that the carrier was a fine move on their part.

Surely you mean you plan to buy close to a hundred keys?

I don't see how opening the boxes supports Cryptic.

Unless there is a secret that I am unaware of, you cant open lock boxes without obtaining keys.

It is so nice to see a thread that actually thanks the devs for what they've done. :)

Ah, but keys can be bought with ec and zen from dilithium.

He was talking about buying keys with zen from real money

Every time people bag on cryptic I start to think "hmmm, maybe they're right" Then I go play one off my other FTP MMO's like Star Wars or DDO and I'm ever so grateful and how STO lacks so many of the gates that most Free to play's have... For this fact alone Cryptic is more generous that almost any other MMO. This is the one game I know of where you can play 100% of the content, not have any power restrictions, not have zone restrictions... Gameplay is identical for free to plays, subs or lifetimers ... Kudos Cryptic.

Either way, real money almost has to be involved at some point (unless you get free ZEN).

Doesn't really matter because for a key to be put on the Exchange (or trade Dilithium for Zen; at some point, SOMEONE had to spend actual Zen for a key or buy the Zen that they put on the Dilithium Exchange - thus PWE/Cryptic gets their money onb matter how a Master Key or Zen for a Key was ultimately obtained.

True, but you can obtain keys off the exchange. Since you're showing your appreciation, I presume that means you intend to pay real money for keys, rather then mass-convert Dilithium or use EC.

As I said, actually opening the box has no bearing on Cryptic. It's the purchasing of Zen that will be the support.

Oh but it does matter, to show appreciation by buying keys with zen you paid real money for is showing appreciation. Buying keys off the exchange is not.

Those keys were bought with zen, to re buy them with EC doesn't matter

I guess it's time for my semi-annual praise for Cryptic so I'll post here... :D

Yeah, they do seem to give away stuff fairly regularly. I've not really played other F2P games, but from what I've heard STO is pretty good compared to them in the 'not charging for everything' department.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Heartily seconded. I've tried a number of MMOs now, and STO is the only one where I have a max-level character, and the only one I keep returning to time and time again, for exactly the reason you mentioned. I like the game, and I like Cryptic. I want to support them.

Actually, according to my experience in a few more MMO's, cryptic games are the most balanced cause the only real diference between F2P, gold and lifetime players is the time you expend getting everything in game, some stuff can be obtained really fast others not quite so, but it's easy to get whatever you want in the game, unlike other games where you are forced topay to advance beyond certain level

compared to other games take WoT. Only free thing they gave, is a cheap tier 2 out of tier 10 worthless tank.

Cryptic hands us a capable carrier for free. Or the odyssey for year 2 or the Ambassador at year 3.

No other game has ever done this. Period.

I'm very thankful for them. And giving us a great Star Trek game to play. Granted some things are not perfect, but what is that we humans make/build. So I have really enjoyed the game, and love to keep logging on. And this is the first time I enjoy being on the forums as well that goes with the game. Where in the past I usually avoided them other than reading about updates.

This year they really gave away the prizes which is a big surprise and welcome. As most game wouldn't do half of this for prizes.

Yes you can buy the keys with EC from the exchange, however someone must have bought the keys with zen in the first place to put them on the exchange.
Yes you can buy zen with dilithium, but someone has to buy zen first to be able to sell it on the dil exchange.

In both cases, cryptic makes money, just not off you, but the one that sold you the items.

To cryptic it doesn't matters who pays for the stuff, only that it is payed for.

He doesn't get it - can't connect the dots. Even people that buy the keys from the exchange are supporting the market and creating demand for the keys.

Similar to "buy local" marketing campaigns - where people are encouraged to buy food with locally produced ingredients, which indirectly supports local farmers.

Also, I am pleased with the giveaway stuff, I also know it's smart marketing more than generosity.
    • Giving away a free ship makes it look generous.
    • Giving away free Lobi crystals makes it look generous.

Combine those two with the premium version of the ship behind a paywall - it's designed to:
    • Get people thinking about spending money
    • Get people thinking about the Lobi store (who previously ignored it)
    • Get people thinking about C-store ships (usually only C-store ships have set items with bonuses)

Even if you don't intend to buy the Advanced Obelisk, there's people now considering all the items in the Lobi store as a result.

I can highly agree, while there are things that make me thumb my nose at them for not fixing when they say they would get to it, overall I still support them simply because they have by far been most generous in other ways and is the leading reason it has taken me away from another popular MMO that I previously played. In fact they IMO is one if not the most generous MMO I have ever played and definitely deserve my TY. ;)

i tend to refrain from offering cryptic kind comments, you will discover this when season 8 comes out, specifically the rep and what they mentioned in their blog earlier.

while i am sure they have addressed some concerns, others however remain untouched. and most of these mentioned are nothing more then a marketing move anyway. while it might be in the right direction, that doesnt mean it should be completely accepted because there is a dual purpose to the move that most people probably don't understand which could have a longer term effect on another plan yet to show itself that could make things worse. so i tend to think further ahead then mentioning a comment that come back like karma.

You really have to stop being "grateful" to a company. You can voice your statisfaction and statements, sure, but Cryptic is a business and giveaways are a form of marketing. They don't do this because you are BFFs and they want to see you happy ;)
