Sr. Character Artist Joe Jing shares details about the process behind redesigning Worf as seen in STO in this entry of the Season 8 News Dev Blog series.
Such a degree of care is what i wish for much more canon things in STO, like certain ships or other more general trek things, like the philosophy behind the federation or Starfleet.
"...'With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured...the first thought forbidden...the first freedom denied--chains us all irrevocably.' ... The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. I fear that today--"
- (TNG) Picard, quoting Judge Aaron Satie
My only critisism, is that Worf has the wrong sash. Should be the DS9 version (more grey, plated), or a variation thereof. Hope we get to see more of the canon characters in some capacity (with or without voiceovers).
If nothing else, maybe they'll at least use this as impetus to allow sashes on Fed Klingons...
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...
...talking to players is like being a mall Santa. Everyone immediately wants to tell you all of the things they want, and you are absolutely powerless to deliver 99% of them.
Nice blog. I to really hope they allow us to reclaim the Worf costume options again. It would be great to finally have my Klingon BOFF wear a metal sash instead of the leather one with his DS9 uniform. Make it so Cryptic!
Perhaps you guys could do some work for the Tasha Yarr NPC model, it doesn't look particularly great. Considering the work you guys went to in order to get the correct facial features for Worf it must be doable.

I find it hilarious Cryptic is touting this "attention to detail" and being true to the character when the Klingons in game get a choice between dreadlocks, dreadlocks, and more dreadlocks. Yes, great attention to detail and being true to character, Cryptic
How the Devs see Star Trek, apparently:
Star Trek: The Original Grind
Star Trek: The Next Grind
Star Trek: Deep Space Grind
Star Trek: Voyage to the Grind
The model doesnt fit with the rest of the game. He is too wide and too tall compared to every other KDF male in the game. Is worf some kind of giant Klingon now? He should be no larger than some of the older Klingons like the Dahar Masters.
Is the head art unique? The bony ridge texture looks smoother and does not seem to be used anywhere else, neither does the hair?
The clothing he is wearing he looks like some kind of circus bear.
Please make him look like he belongs in this universe. He does not look natural at all.
I must commend the work done on Worf's new look. It's awesome to have Worf look like the actual character we've seen in the series and movies.
I'm very glad to have the in game Worf being clearly reckognizable to anyone as the character played by Michael Dorn and it certainly is a superb adition of the Star Trek spirit in STO and the Klingon faction.
For Ambassador Worf's new outfit you guys seriously couldn't come up with something new and just for Worf, like how you have outfit pieces throughout the game that only NPCs have?
His outfit looks stupid and lazily done.
Top = Klingon fur sleeves
Wrists = Romulan republic
Belt = The original series (klingon)
Bottom = Fleet embassy romulan senate robes
Boots = Bajoran militia (federation)
Heck, in my opinion the bottom of the fleet senate robes doesn't even look good on my own characters combined with the top. The pants have that extra part that looks like it's meant to be an extension of the top making the robes appear longer then they really are. Instead of having the affect of making the top look longer as 1 piece, it winds up being 2 pieces and looks stupid.
Remove that robe part on the senate robes bottom and just leave it as pants and it would look a lot better. For the senate robes top, make it longer so it looks like 1 piece. Or at least make the senate robes bottom as just pants without the robe part as an optional piece so the players who like it the way it is can keep it, and it gives us another choice.
Edit: Any way you guys can give us the Worf hair and beard for all Klingon characters, both fed and KDF, and the sash for feds? It's been quite a while since you had that as some sort of special giveaway (which was before I started playing). Perhaps have it as a costume pack and put it in the c-store. (Seriously, I just want the young Worf hair and beard from his early TNG days) His new hairstyle would be nice if you could give it to us. Tired of the all braids look, though male klingons have a short straight style but it don't look good to me.
My two favorite things in this blog are "Reference for A Worf" because there's multiple Worfs and the comments on his face "Intense Eyes" "Trademarked fu manchu mustache" heh.
That was good.
Also, I'd love the ambasador's robes from the reference for a klingon images with the three diagonal lines.
I'm so glad we got to have Worf back for the episode and I hope he did a lot more voice acting too.
It's very nice to see an updated and more accurate Worf finally. The sad part is, it shouldn't take Dorn doing voice acting to get the best work out of the team that works on these things. STO needs to be brought up to that standard all across the board and that includes a ton of bug fixes to fit in there as well without taking years to get what should have been from day one.

Have the wrong badge for DS9.
Use the admiral's pants. Although no correct S1 pants exist in game. S1 pants are supposed to have dep't color piping at the ankles.
As a general trick, when I want an exact look, I have software to pin windows on top and make them semi-transparent. I'd take multiple reference shots, pin them over the head in the character creator and adjust sliders until they matched. I'd trace from several angles and then make final adjustments where the reference photos didn't agree... After all, actors may be different weights or contorting their face in photos. I do the same for body and then height, although I deliberately skew towards tall, because I feel the average Trek actor should be the height of the average character in game.
When possible, I always tried to do this within the limits of the human, Klingon, or Vulcan sliders.
Now, sometimes, I do all this not to mimick a character but to create starting points. Because Cryptic's base slider values have never looked all that human to me. The bulk is oddly distributed, limbs are odd proportions, and faces look plasticky.
So if I start with a Shatner or Marc Alaimo template, for example, and then adjust from there, I feel like I get a more authentically human avatar than any of the presets. I also have some generally more doughy male builds for TOS extras. I figure people in the background should't look like their uniforms fit too well.

The Worf costume items that came with the 25th Anniversary did not have a metal sash, it had the season one cloth sash.
Federation male and female characters:
TNG Season 1 Uniform
Klingon and Federation male characters that have hair options:
Worf's short hair and warrior goatee from TNG Season 1
Klingon and Federation male and female characters: Worf's TNG Season 1 style Uniform Sash
It is listed as "Warrior's Sash" in the tailor. The metal sash ingame is earned through rank ups.
A thousand times, this. To actually hear that spoken by the actual voice of Worf: total trekgasm.
You know, It was funny:
To have my character, (who I've worked on for years now and who to me, has come to represent the "new Trek"), meet such an iconic and beloved character from the last incarnation of Trek that I enjoyed, (excluding all the JJ-verse stuff).....
To have Worf actually SPEAK to him like he did at the end of the mission.
I don't know, It was sorta like a Picard meets Kirk moment for me. It really was ! Much more so than it was when my character met Tasha.
Maybe because we got to know Worf better than Tasha, maybe because I liked the Worf character better.... Don't ask me why.
I just wish others shared/enjoyed in that moment as much as I did, because despite any other misgivings I may have with this or that about the game: That moment between my character and Worf was pure Trek, as close to pure Trek I've come to in WAY TOO LONG. And Cryptic put the time and effort to bring it to me.
But I do concur that putting Worf's new hair and beard options in the character customization options would hit it outta the park.

Also the DS9 sash is the level up one, not the TNG / DS9 version.
Worf's DS9 hair is a badass drawn back ponytail thing, the model seems to be using the TNG S1,2,3 hair. Still anything's better than the late TNG bob style.
However it's still a fantastic job. So when do the players get all these new ridges / hairstyles / beards etc?
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I keep hoping for a TNG mega-bundle liks the TOS and Enterprise ones if not bigger.
- I'd use TNG interior for almost any ship. DS9 is my favorite series but the TNG sets just look like home to me. None of the other starship sets look like home. They look like assignments. The TNG interior is a place where I could imagine having a full life.
- 10-1 this is where the skant would get included.
- I also would envision it including the TNG anniversary Worf bits, maybe some other haircuts, and a TNG Admiral jacket and/or dress uniform.
In my opinion, those years of TNG where Worf had the bob made up my favorite years of Trek. I'd put any of my Klingon alts in the bob haircut if I could.
Thanks for sharing with us the thoughts of redesingning Worf in this nice dev blog
I think the new model does reprezents better the character. If i do remember the old one had a bit too much white hair, while now is better, more grey and less white, since the klingons lived for a long time, and not that much time passed in STO for Worf, if compared with some other klingons from Star Trek. And i remember here the trio from DS9 that went with Jadzia Dax to kill the Albino. Those were like 150 years old or so.

Now, how about giving some of us another shot at the warrior beard and sash (for our Feds)

Call me a Trek nerd..... But it was WAY cool having Worf tell my character that his actions brought him honor.
It doesn't get more Trek than that... I THANK YOU CRYPTIC !

Now then ... Give us the various bits and pieces for Klingon customization.
We need more hair, beard, etc. options!

I agree with another on here. It really shows the lacking of customization on the Klingons or any KDF.
