I used to think STO was for the Star Trek fans, who are mostly older, with more money than time, and thus lots of simplistic game play elements (stuff like flight controls, crafting, etc, are all very low-friction), but I always got a vibe like the game had a lot of younger players running around in it too which I mostly just attributed to the F2P part of it. More recently it seems like the game is shifting towards appealing to younger players, things the elachi assets used a lot of bright primary colors, a playskool color palette, that the elachi themselves did not represent in skin tone or anything. Also the dyson sphere has a very console-gaming feel to it, that is very different from the rest of the game universe. Who is the target demo now, and has it changed any?

When the game launched I was a college student who could barely afford the subscription. Now I am a free player who owns 15 c-store ships across 3 factions. I have never purchased a ship based on primary colors. I buy the things I like and do not buy the other things.
I do not see the elachi as being any stranger then the hirogen, breen, or tholians in the game. I do not ooh and ahh over them like a child, though I might smile as I remember some star trek reference while looking at them.
Is this post your backhanded way of saying that dinosaurs with lasers are childish and so you think sto is dumbing down for kids? If it is, I disagree with you. Star trek is everything from gods, to tribbles, to ghosts, to zombies, to demons in klingon heaven. Dinosaurs are no stranger then any of that.

Odd. I get the impression that it is the younger players who are more inclined to want the easy-play, no-risk, features.
But then, I am am old so, I assume other old players will share my tastes.
Question? does it matter. Long as you mount up, point your weapons at the badguy and do everything in your power to make him go boom, whether a player or NPC does it matter?

Agreed. I believe it's as you state. I'm an OLD gamer (50) and I LOVE a challenging game. Hell, my first consistent MMO was the vanilla 1999 released EverQuest - and unless you played that version, I can tell you:
- All the guys who moaned about STO having a Death Penalty (the damage/injury system at any difficulty setting past normal); and how it was too harsh (BTW I was one of the guys in the original 2009 STO closed beta stating we need harder content and a DP); have NO IDEA what a truly harsh DP is (Vanilla EQ's was quite severe - a 20% loss of current EXP - and you COULD loose actual character levels you earned earlier.)
- If you think STO has 'grind'; trust me, it's nothing compared to vanilla EQ's gear/raid grind or 'Hell Levels' when you were leveling up. (It took about a year playing a few hours a night to get from 1 - 50 in EQ <--- IF you avoided a lot of deaths)
So, yeah, OP, quite blaming us older folks for wanting STO to b 'more casual'. IMO - I think most older gamers actually LIKE some challenge. In my experience, it's been the younger crowd that has less patience; and a 'gotta have it NAO!' mentality.
YMMV.

I don't want to offend anyone, especially since this includes me, but I think that the target demographic is...nerds.
(I guess I should yell it like I am at a drunken frat house)
...NERDS!
I am NOT a nerd...I am just a fan of Star Trek and STO does a GREAT job at giving us a good game to play...Just because I like the Trek Universe doesn't make me a nerd...people should quit stero typing the player fan base.

lol Everquest in 1999. I was there not long after release. Even with all its flaws it was awesome, because I had seen nothing like it before. Whenever I think of EQ, I inevitably think of "Train!".
You are correct. It was brutal. Soloing was nearly impossible for all but a couple of classes, who figured out how to take advantage of their Damage Over Time abilities.
Not only was there a death penalty, but you had to travel from wherever you were "bound" to where you had died in order to retrieve your gear. If, you weren't of a class that could cast a binding spell, that could be a long way. And that spot could be very difficult to reach again, without your gear or even a group.

I'm guessing that the irony of your statement eludes you.

Enlighten me to this irony then.
So, Gamers and Fanboys?
Anyone who has a horrible attitude and is just rude to fellow players for no particular reason to put it in general terms.

Enlightenment is a personal journey. All I can do is point you to the path. You have to travel it yourself.
With that said, let me add that I find an unprovoked insult, directed at the majority of the forum users, to be neither respectful or mature.
