I'm talking now from an in-universe standpoint, not a Cryptic TOS standpoint..
What canon character names (which would be in Starfleet history books) would be considered by Starfleet to be either appropriate or inappropriate as Federation Starship names.
I would imagine any of the famous dead Captains: Archer, Pike, Kirk, and Sulu - though we don't know what type of Captain Sulu was. McCoy was an Admiral, so possibly him on a med ship. Also Decker, for either father or son, and I assume Cochrane. I'm not certain if Spock is considered dead in this time or just missing, but I'll assume him - and probably his father too.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
each of my toons have themes to their ship names, regardless of it's "appropriateness" Deety's ships are all based on Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom saga. Kamehameha's are based on Hawaiian volcano, gods or Island names. 3.14159's are all math terms.
I try to avoid the "Starfleet" names, as well as other Sci Fi names simply because you cannot swing a dead klingon without hitting a Excalibur, Atlantis, Pegasus, ect. heck i have even spotted 3 USS TARDIS in one crusie from alpha Centauri to DS9.
if you want to name your ship after some Starfleet types, I would say the one offs.. like Nogura, Robert Wesley, and Komack. if i ever decide to fly the Ambassador, I'll name her the USS Gav, since Tellarites don't get any love
Absolutely. What I meant was characters in one or two episodes or just referenced. A good example would be the names of the captains on kirk's courtmartial board
What I never understand is why we hardly ever see any Starfleet ships with non-Earth-derived names. The Federation is supposed to be more than just humans.

There is or was a U.S.S. Cochrane in game a few seasons ago when they used to put up facts on the bottom.
In the loading screens it states that the captain and either first officer or 2 other crew members ( can't fully remember ) were removed from active duty and the records of the event where sealed.
Maybe they stumbled on to Cryptic's secret lock box plans.
when you go to the prison on the 2800 FE series the undine you fight is the captain of the chochrane that was removed from command

because there really are not any Canon non human names. I googled vulcan places and got 6 cities. I'm sure Andor will have the same or fewer. that's why I have suggested a couple times that we should have back stories for at least a couple of our BOFFS. really why not a murder-mystery at LCDR XXXX's hometown, and She wants to go home to help out since it was her friend? or maybe Lt YYYY wants to go home for his brother's wedding? Andor and Vulcan are in the game, why not expand where we can go, and add some content?

In all seriousness, there should be a USS Spock out there at the very least. I could imagine the USS Kira. There's already the USS Phlox.
That was the U.S.S. T'Kumbra.
