I'm actually enjoying the Fleet Avenger as a beam+torp boat. And I do see where people are getting the "looks like a TOS ship" from. If you use the upswept pylons instead of the Intrepid-style nacelles-bolted-right-to-the-hull pylons, it looks a lot like a blockier, beefier Connie.

I think it's a nice thing to enhance the pack of Federation ships and I really hope one day Cryptic Studios will release a complete set of new generation'ships (one new cruiser, one new science vessel and one new escort ship) for the three factions.
...But I think to speak for all the ST fans out there when I say that we WANT a ship design inspired by the true TV/movie Star Trek ships!!

"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
I used to fly an escort armed with DHC but I wanted to fly a more canon like beam boat instead.
I moved back to the only ship that I was upset to have to leave during my leveling process - The four nacelle Heavy Cruiser.
Particularly the Stargazer class.
I now fly a Fleet Heavy Cruiser Retrofit and am enjoying myself more than I was in an escort.
I understand that it is not the best ship but the looks are something that I fell in love with.
I know I could upgrade to at least three better cruisers but I am happy with it. It feels like the most balanced Eng Cruiser layout. Enough ENG to consider it a Cruiser with enough mobility and TAC to make a difference in combat.
Please, no more spiky saucers and weird nacelles!!! These new saucers look like d*** heads, c'mon!!
Blame the guy who designed the Enterprise-E, not Cryptic. The Sovereign-class is where we started to get more elongated saucers, a trend that continued with the Intrepid-class.

A couple of class is ok, not every single new ship...expecially cruisers.
The round or at least "elongated" saucer, maybe is the most famous element that differs classic ST Federation ships from others.
I'm not referring to the perfect Ambassador's round saucer btw... Even the Sovereign or Luna class one could be nice.
Not beautiful by a LONG shot... The Galaxy(any variant), Excelsior, hideous Regent(arguably the ugliest of the bunch) or the Odyssey. The Nebula is ok because it got rid of some of the Galaxy's ugliness and it's WAY more useful. The Avenger... What can I say but YIKES!!! Ugly and not very cruiser like at all. Too much block and not enough grace. Still better than the Regent, though!
Besides... I use the Fleet Heavy Cruiser Retrofit as my main ship, and it's wonderful and aesthetically pleasing (as long as it's not the Cheyenne class that is)!
If you find the Galaxy, Excelsior, and Cheyenne to be ugly, then you are by no means a Trek fan and do not belong in this game or on this forum. All three of those, ESPECIALLY the first two, represent some of the biggest icons in the Trek universe. Sorry, but thats how it is.
Because I am a fairly new player I was wondering what you experienced players would recommend in the way of a tier 5 ship for a Fed Engineer. I am hearing that the Avenger Class is good, but I am also looking at the Odyssey Class and the Atrox Carrier. Recommendations? I am looking for a tanky ship with good team support and offensive capabilities. However I would prefer to have more offence and defense than trying to branch into a jack of all trades. I would really appreciate any feedback, I don't want to buy into anything and then later end up disappointed.

The coming of the new Avenger movie-- I mean cruiser has got me thinking about cruisers in the modern day Federation.
Its definitely becoming more red. As the Federation progressed from the Excelsior --> Assault Cruiser --> Various non-C-store fleet retrofits --> Regent --> Avenger, the ship design became more and more tactical to the exclusion of everything else that a cruiser could be made to perform. In essence, what we're seeing (and on many fronts, what we are begging for intentionally or not), it is fast approaching an evolutionary dead-end where it becomes a damn good pve DPS ship, and can't perform any where else.
So, what exactly is a viable cruiser in the Federation? It really depends on the job. The metagame in STO is being hyperspecialized at something. DPS + survivability takes top priority as PVE is essentially turreting and getoutoftheHYT; this has led to cruisers becoming more and more tactical. Yet there is still demand for a healing platform and for that only 1 specific design fulfils best. However, a ship must be hyperspecialized in something is useful to progression in the game or else it gets dumped by the wayside.
Let's start with specialist cruisers
Specialist cruisers are, strangely enough, those cruisers designed to do one job really well, and do everything else rather well! Looking to the Assault Cruiser as an example, we find that she has been replaced by essentially 2 offspring designs:
The Avenger. She is the premier A2B DHC Federation DPS cruiser, with the highest focus fire potential. 5/3 weapons, reinforced hull styling, and stats that reflect a ship meant to give and take a beating. For all intents and purposes, the only thing out-dpsing this baby in a FA is a Scimitar. Like a famous captain once said of the latter, "She's a predator." However, the Avenger's a fat baffoon. Even at 9 turn, she's still going to have trouble chasing nimbler targets like BoPs and the arch nemesis of everything, the JHAS. Her 5/3 layout means that nimbler targets can and will sit on her tail and be safe from effective returning fire. You will need a teammate to bring movement control, and then you bring the Avenger down on the trapped foe like a hammer.
The Regent is the premier A2B BFAW Federation DPS cruiser, with the highest AOE dps potential. She also comes with a broadsiding projectile option for beamboats in PVE. In place of cannons, the Regent has beams which under the doff climate becomes the ship you turn to to melt the Star Carrier Online spam in order for the team to perform. Having no favored direction in weapon layout further plays to this.
A drawback of both designs is that with that much Red, its got less Blue and Yellow. You need the latter 2 to build a full heal cruiser. For that, there is the Yamaguchi. She replaces pretty much every single non-C-store Fleet cruiser because she's the ultimate support cruiser at Comm Eng, LtComm Sci and Lt Eng. She has good hull and shields. And she still has enough tactical to make a dent in something. Comes with a 2409 hull repaint too. Benefits from A2B BFAW DEMarion and I would recommend having those slotted, grabbing aux batteries and play with your power settings to ensure heal capacity is not gimped by low aux.
If the game needed tanks, if hull-damage resisting made sense, then the Galaxy Exploration Cruiser Retrofit would be perfect for that. But as far as I can tell, the Gal-R is a heal cruiser that brings an Eng Team cleanse rather than a Sci, and be still able to slot the standard skills that keep a cruiser alive. Her main advantages are not that much of an advantage since they are all insufficient buffs to aspects that require a lot more to help in combat. The Devs design ships using arbitrary balance instead of complex metrics grounded in reality. That's why the Galaxy should've had 25% more hull and 1 more eng console slot to a total of 11 consoles just because that's roughly how much those stats are worth in practice against things like more turn or more shields. This can be justified by the Galaxy being such a 452m fat, 47 deck tall lady. The Gal-R also doesn't have any other advantage outside of combat that isn't available to another comparable cruiser. Except save that she's the most beautiful ship ever built by the Federation, and that there will never be anything like her ever again.
Then comes the multi-role cruisers, the traditional design mentality for the ships:
The Odyssey. The Flagship of the Federation. And one hell of an expensive ship. She can be anything in effect especially if you forked out for all the options. But as a multi-role ship, she pays the hybrid tax by being as slow as Morga in the swamp of Tanagra and now having less shields or less hull than the specialists depending on which branch you are comparing the Odyssey to. The Excelsior is still a quicker means of sector space transport.
After that, comes the hybrids and things get really strange:
The Excelsior is in a pretty strange place, if she wasn't already there. She's a combination of a Regent and a normal 7 eng slot cruiser. She pays a relative hybrid tax (as compared to the Avenger and the Regent) for being both a dps and a support cruiser at the same time. This tax is that she's unable to slot DHCs, and turns at 8. Otherwise, most of the healing options are there, and she has an ability to flit around the galaxy far quicker than any cruiser, what with [Trans] warpcores and Astrometric scientists giving you a transwarp cooldown of ZERO.
The Galaxy-X Dreadnought Cruiser has been officially acknowledged as a separate class of its own. On hindsight, yes, the Gal-X was the first of Dreadnoughts to come. It is an evolution from the slow, preponderous cruiser design into a platform of high outgoing damage and high survivability at the cost of being virtually "unable to move". I put that in brackets because every single dreadnought after the Gal-X is far bigger, far beefier, and quite a tad more manoeuvrable thanks to their +1 degree of turn and higher inertia rating. Even so, the Gal-X pays a hefty hybrid tax for being a cruiser and a dreadnought that I dare say is in name only. Her combination of high eng slots, some tac punch, and that huge gun comes at the price of 2 of the best cruiser commands, all sensible manoeuvrability and at this point in time, having no hangar bay like a Dreadnought type ship should. She should have had a hangar. According to AES, the raised bridge and dual cannon pylons of the dreadnought were the result of expanding the Main Shuttle Bay to manage a full fighter wing and runabout support squadron. As it stand, the Gal-X's main advantage is her wave motion gun. The Phaser Spinal Lance remains the only not-ridiculously-telegraphed BFG attack in the game. We dreadnought captains have slogged long and hard to get to the state where we can force a target to fight on our terms and die in a phaser fire. We don't need saucer sep; All we need is that hangar bay and +10% stats, and we will be a force in PVP.
The Nebula Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit is arguably not a cruiser. But with her generous hull (for a science ship), slowish yet not totally gimped manouverability (9 turn on 40 inertia), more shields than a cruiser can shake a warp core at, and a potential to A2B like a cruiser, I consider her one. In effect, she's a hybrid of a cruiser and a science vessel, sacrificing hull, cruiser commands, 2 weapon slots and high eng slots for shields, speed, SST, SA, and high Sci slots. If you run with high aux, you gain improve sensor ability to see all the cloaked Roms. Converse, you can give my Aux-less Nebbie A2B ptg dps build a try; even I amaze myself at how effective it is in pve!
Alas, in a game where the specialists have few weaknesses, being a hybrid means a tax means lower maximum efficiency means being frowned upon in pvp.
The ultimate losers?
<insert whacky fleet retrofit here> They suffer the most. They are essentially various hybrids between cruiser and escort (sacrifices DHCs however) or cruiser and science (sacrifices Comm Sci slot however). Not enough red to dps, not enough blue to support, or has red or blue but suffers from silly hull and shield ratings. Sure they got variability, but in a game where specialists rule, the hybrid tax just comes down so hard on these poor buggers. And they all don't have C-store discounts, making them way too expensive in my opinion for what they're worth.
And there ends my long essay about the state of cruisers in the Federation. Please be a grammar TRIBBLE cos I'm actually practicing for my English exam this Saturday and I'm terrible at it!! :P
Space balls ... put some of that oil in there and you win ... On the avenger
Define offense and defense, because there's a tac-offensive and a sci-offensive. But all cruisers have some defensiveness built in. ^^;
My recommendation? If you didn't mind the looks, an Excelsior gives you everything you want (high Tac boff seating, 7 eng slots) and is the fastest ship in the galaxy.
By Offense I was thinking tactical, as I am already doing pretty well with tactical. I have looked at the Excelsior, and fluff wise I think its the best ship out there. But after comparing the stats I am leaning a bit towards the Odyssey because of the device slots. That and its one of my favorite ship designs. Just wanna make sure I am not missing out on something by passing up the avenger either, I have pulled some awesome cannon warbirds with my Romi character and think its great. However I don't quite understand the advantages of its consoles besides that it looks like it gets bonus weapons. I don't really get the Odyssey chevron separation either, which is why I am asking experienced players like you for your input.
Well when it comes to tactical cruisers there is the big 5 : the fleet excelsior, the fleet sovereign, the odyssey (tac and sci), the fleet ambassador and of cause the new avengers.
However, the new ship drops some defense for ofense as its made to carry cannons.
The flet excelsior and fleet sovereign are more durable while retaining most of the damage potential.
The highest posible output would go to the sci odyssey. sensor analysis plus a potential mix of lt and ltc boff powers plus dem can be quite devastating but youll lose alot of survivability when configured that way. However with a slightly tone down offense it gains it back easily, and it has the most flexibility if you care for that, keep some extra boffs handy and you can go from tactical cruiser to crowd control or super tank in moments.
The chevron seperation is a very handy tool. Once separated youre stardrive section gaine speed and alot of manouverability and power to weapons.
If you slot all the odyssey consoles your chevron gains a trqactor beam and gw3wich it often deploys against mobs, very usefull. IT doesnt die too easily and it deploys its own workbees wich often will heal you.
-speaking of workbees, those are very usefull too. they repar damage over time but you can launch them befor you take damage, they can be set to heal friendlies up to 15 km away.
The heal is pretty powerfull as well and they have a rather short cooldown.
The aquarius isnt the most usefull thing ever, i mainly keep it because its fun and the 3 set bonus. but ive seen it kill firgates and ists some extra dmg.
The fleet excelsior and the fleet sovereign are very very similar with a wee bit more flexibility and punch in favor of the sovereign and a bit more ruggedness in favor of the excelsior. Imho the excelsior offers the best compromise between firepower, survivability and mobility. A big plus is the fastest way you can travel the universe. That transwarp drive is great and is a nice replacement for those borg or mako engines alot of people slott for speed without much benefit in battle.
Then there is the fleet ambassador wich trades a bit of punch for some more sci powers.
Damage output can be close to the excelsior but not quite, but it does have some tricks up its sleeves. Some sci abilities are force multipliers. I recomend gw, viral matrix or my personal favorite, feedback pulse.
And last but not least there it the avenger. Its certainly best if you prefer focused fire and its ability to cary cannons surely alows it the highest spike dmg. Less hull and dependance on lower end cannon abilities make it a bit questionable in my book. Imho its a good choice if youre an escort guy looking for something more tanky or a cruiserguy who wants something more escorty. Its certainly powerfull but imho a bit of a flase compromise.
Setup as a beamnoat ist should have similar performace as the fleet excelsior with a bit more power in the front arc. But again its a bit less tanky.
Maybe a mix of beams and cannons but thats not as easy to pull of compared to pure beam or canon boats.
Id vore for Fleet Excelsior , Fleet Sovereign for the staight and easy way to have tactical cruisers.
Best overall imho is still the Oddy because it can do it all depending on loadout. It hase some nice tricks, enough flexibility not to bore you after a month and nice visuals inside and outside. I recommend the bundle. I use the sci version alot but the tac version is a close second.
Getting the bundle is by far the most expensive option but i still think its worth it.
Oh before i forget, there are some othe ships beside cruisers you might want to take a look at:
Namely the Heavy escort carrier, the advanced escort and the steamrunner.
The HEC is certainly the most flexible. Its quite tanky and powerfull and the hanger gives you alot of options to eiher increase dmg or beef up your defenses. Some hangar pets also are good for crowd control.
The advanced escort surely is not quite as tanky as other escorts but with a lt science it can be. Or you load it up with sci fun to great effect. The multi vector modes also increase speed wich increases your defense value ,its speed tanking if you will. all the vectors have different capabilities. Vector alpha is iirc the eng heavy one with engineering team as ai or more power to engines and shields if you fly it.
Vector Beta is the tac one, the most nimble escort ingame with more weapons power.
Vector gamais iirc the sci one with tractor beam and more aux power.
Its a nice ship and one of the few id recommend as a beam escort if you like that sort of thing.
Lastly the steamrunner. That is one beefy escort.Just straight forward brute force combined with a good hull and 2 lt eng give it loads of survivability. Its imho a close second to the JHAS.
Is also one f the more rare ships in the game. Its only available via steam btu it comes as a full on fleet grade vessel and you get a tier 2 version as well and some beginnerslevel equipment too. Its an accountwide unlock so it offers great value.
Few people are flying it because geting it from steam is kinda quirky. Sometimes its on sale , i got mine for about 10 ? .
An other alternative ids the fleet atrol escort, tanky and powerfull as well.
So do you think the more Tactical focused cruiser's is a hint that the game will continue on it's DPS course?
It's blatantly obvious that the game is combat focuses (except for the wonderful people on the foundry that are releasing non combat heavy missions...thank you for keeping the game interesting), therefore people whom prefer a certain class of ships will not be disapoint.
Lastly, if the avenger battle cruiser is designed for combat I have 5 questions about the other ships of it's ear (once they're released to the public):
1. Will they also be focused on combat?
2. Will that mean every 2400( & up) ship will be a hybrid with an escort (meaning smaller in size and with more combat abilities)?
3. What will the player roles be if most ships will be focused on combat. For example I am an Engineer, will my Engineering abilites increase my DPS or will they continue to repair my ship?
4. What does that mean about carriers? What role would they play now if smaller faster ships will have more fire power than a carrier's weapon loadout + it's fighters/Frigate extra DPS?
5. Will escorts now have a 5/5 weapon arrangement or some massive increase in firepower?
One day Cryptic will be free from their Perfect World overlord. Until that day comes, they will continue to pamper the whales of this game, and ignore everyone that isn't a whale.

imho things will go like this:
1: they will be at least on a level with ships that are average in combat today. So expect at least a ltc com or universal and at least 3 tactical consoles. But if the avenger is an indication well see some more ships around that concept. Personaly im expecting a sci destroyer with a 4/2 layout capable ons uni layout or something along those lines packed with 3 tac consoles and sensor analysis.
2. Well new ships tned to be in the 2500 zen region if they have a new console or special item on them. I suspect that to stay that way
3. i do think that engineers will get some overhaul at some point but i dont expect it anytime soon.
4.means youll get another set of fighters at some point with more firepower as well as frigates.
5. 5/5 is unlikely imho. 5/2 will be more comen at some point , i guess once the klingons get one of those ships. 5 tac consoles will be seen more often at new escorts or raptors if they ever make some new.
I doubt I will be able to spend 50 dollars at the moment. I currently have 25 that I can use, so given that I can only buy one Odyssey should I still consider? I have looked into it more and I think that I am certainly leaning towards the Ops Odyssey at the moment. Its tanky which is my main goal, but is capable of still doing good damage. Those are really the two traits that are important. I want to survive the Elite PvE missions better so I don't need to continue repairing my ship so often.
No if thats the case ditch the oddy. It only realy worth as the bundle. And buying one will make it much more expensive to complete the 3 set later.
If you cant get the fleet ships id highly recommend the regent.
It easily can do the damage of the tac oddy while vbeing quite tanky. Not to mention youll get a discount on the fleet version should you have the the opportunity to buy one at some point.
But the most valuable thing you get from it is the wideangle quantum torpedo.
It will make broadsiding so much easier for you, especialy on a fine ship like the regent.
Another plus is that the regent comes with multiple skins to customize to your liking.
While i dont like the look of the regent it also has the skins of the sovreign available as well as the noble and monarch class.
The console it comes with is gimmicky but if combined with mines and release warp plasma it sure is quite a punch.
So id say regent if you want to go the classic cruiser way, avenger if you want to mix cruiser and escort style.
Or if you like the classics the excelsior is also available. It is a bit more rugged than the regent and that transwarp drive is fun and endlessly usefull for colecting doff missions.
But id go regent as much as i love the Excelsior. Basicly similar performance but that torpedo just is priceless, especially considering you can put it on any ship.
Thank you so much, I am glad I waited for someone to let me know what the best option was. At some point when I feel a bit richer I might just buy the Oddy bundle, but that wasn't in the cards this time around.
Thank you for your help guys, I really appreciate the time you guys took to answer newbie questions.
I like the Avenger, looks wise not so much.
Whats with the twin boom design?
I own quite a few escorts and when i picked up the avenger it feels natural to fly.
For destroying things, it's perfect, I can now make attacks runs and take damage and survive.
For players who have flown the kdf battle cruisers, the avenger is just as easy to fly.
Took it through some elite stfs earlier today and it surpassed my expectations, it blew them out of the airlock.
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Great post. Truthfully I'm at that point where I'm just gonna stop spending cash til they start making an effort to keep older ships up to par. I'm not gonna keep pushing out cash just so every few months i can see they made something better that fully replaces my other purchases.
I own quite a few ships all fleet except my Galaxy-X. It's getting to the point where its not about making the customer happy and letting us enjoy the game. Seems to be about rep grinds and making newer better ships most of which come with the outrageous cost of buying keys to open lock boxes for a chance to win or having to save up lobi cystals. If that wasn't unpleasant enough you have ships like this new Avenger class which stomps all over the toes of the regent class. They say they don't wanna take away one ships design and paste it to another and then they steal most of what made the Regant good and put it on some weird looking kitbash ship.
Honestly like another poster said think I'll vote with my wallet. Either they can start making ships like the Galaxy and the G-X worth the price i paid and not have new releases stepping on their toes or objectives that make the game Dps centric, upgrade Engineer boffs or I'll just stop buying ships and Ship slots and keep what i have. They want to make tier 6's that replace our old ships that is one thing but to be bringing out these new ships and saying their on par with our older ones is just feeling like their insulting to my intelligence.
^^^ This!

Sci Oddy, Fleet Excelsior, Fleet Sovereign,Fleet Avenger, Fleet Ambassador
5. Will escorts now have a 5/5 weapon arrangement or some massive increase in firepower?
imho things will go like this:
Thank you for your help guys, I really appreciate the time you guys took to answer newbie questions.

Tier 5 doesn't mean anything anymore. The Galaxy's need to be retrofitted - there have been lots of ideas in the forums but creating a Universal console slot would speak to the Galaxy's intended versatility!
