I'm an american of irish decent. My great grandparents on my mothers side came to this country during the great potato famine. Certainly it was a time of upheaval and devestation. It took our home away from us and made us outcasts to the entire irish race. But we still have our culture our art and our tales from old that ring through the hills like the music that we play. Our culture is fine and strong thank you very much. And it takes a bit more than a potato famine to destroy us.
i'm an Irish american myself.
and there is no denying that the event you describe DID have a HUGE impact on Irish culture
i never said that a catastrophic event would destroy a culture, just fundamentally alter it
its rather clear you dont understand what i'm trying to say, or possibly wont.
either way i'm done arguing about it.
the simple fact is that a culture does not survive a catastrophic event unscathed. who a people were before such an event, and who they are after, are not the same. such an event changes things, whether we wish it to or not
I'm not entirely sure I'm making a mistake here:
Back then were were a militaristic culture. There was also a need to bring back "the good days", one of the symptoms was precisely that willingness to believe in those who told us they would provide us with the ability to do just that: gain past glory from they days of the holy Roman Empire of German nation.
There's also a german term I'm not sure there's an equivalent term for in the English language (unlikely given our tendency to put into one word where the English one uses 5 to 10): "Obrigkeitshoerigkeit" It means a culture of putting every faith in the state and accepting everyting those "above us" do to be right allowed us to believe as readily as our ancestors did whatever stuff they told us.
That culture is no longer there, at least not in the same drastic measures as it was back then.
There were also other culturally accepted actions that are no longer acceptable so our society has changed a lot since then.
I'm not sure I'm getting my point across but it's also our culture that has changed, otherwise our nation's attitude towards various matters would still be the same as 100 years ago, irrespective of the type of government.
I believe i have at least a simple understanding of what you are saying, but perhaps it is I who isnt being clear..
Culture is at its heart a recognized commonality between two people. It defines a sameness, a familial likeness so to speak. Its what we feel when we sit down to break bread together, or tell tales of great hero's or sing songs or play dirges. culture evolves of its own accord. Culture absorbs history and myth: blood and bone. Dig deeper. Go beyond all the things that you attribute to germanic heritage and find the things that for a thousand years have defined each and every german clan and family, and you'll find a culture that is as rich as any on the face of the earth. trusting in ones government is politics. Trusting in your next door neighbor, helping them raise their kids, sharing experiences and history, art and music: those are what make up a mere piece of a culture..

there was never an argument. I have and will continue to state that culture evolves of its own accord. Its made up of history and myth: the workings of the hands of men andd women throughout history. it can only be added too, becoming richer in the process.. Yes, we changed coming to this country just as the romulans would change moving to a new planet, but at our very core, we are still tuatha De Danna, Firbolg, Norman, irish since time immemorial and that will never change. And just like us, The romulans will always be romulan in story, in myth, in every day behavior, because thats who they are and have always been.
Something seems really off when it comes to the behaviour i see in the game and then looking to the tv shows and movies. Romulans in the game are kinda annoying cry babies by comperison. I thought Romulans had pride. just my 2 cents on what i think of how this factions story turned out lmao. Desroyed home world or not, i wanted to be a romulan from from the tv shows and movies. They didnt trust others so easily and were mean as hell most of the time...
Keep in mind they made the romulan player faction into a copy of the Rebel Alliance in order to broaden its appeal for new players (particularly non trek fans). For that reason their ships are also better overall compared to fed and KDF ships, to make htem more attractive to a broader base.
I get the argument some make about cultures evolving and all, but that's just NOT how STO works. STO is a game where its more important for them to put in a reference to trek than for it be trek. In a similar way the Romulan faction is superficially romulan in look but feel totally different to what an actual Romulan fan would want to play. Like I mentioned before, its design is all based around appealing to a broader customer base. Personally I think that's just shortsightedand will come back to bite them, or at the very least result in a lot of wasted work, but ifwe consider the Romulans as just another system it fits in really well with everything else in STO. A lot of lead up work for it to then be abandoned and never touched upon again.

I understand precisely where your coming from and your absolutely correct. Everything you stated is undeniably true. But i would present that those things you mentioned are all the mechanics of the game. The machine. if there is to be a Romulan culture, then it is up too us ( the players ) to define it, uphold it or create it. Cryptic can only give us the simplest of commodities ( ? ) to work with. Perhaps you feel we are bound by cryptics little box of neo-trekism's, and perhaps to a degree we are. But the romulan culture in STO can and will expand beyond the boundaries of cryptics little box. It already has, right here in these forums..

I would wish any such romulans the best of luck. the KDF is on population life support and it at least has the benefit of being what a KDF fan would expect.
TBH I would've preferred the Romulan faction to not be released as such, but instead been a non romulan generic faction. It could be for non starfleet and non KDF captains that would still choose to align with one side or the other. Non starfleet fed species would generally line up with starfleet and non KDF red species could line up with the KDF. Is it bad I want to play a human space rent-a-cop and show those starfleet ninnies how to really kick TRIBBLE?

Thank you. we need it.. to be honest, throughout my life, the romulans havent even been my favorite race. In the star trek universe of role playing i was always a bit more like spock than kirk, but not enough to counter the fact i was really Han Solo and didnt fit in at all.. When they released the Romulans though, something snapped.. RRW? whats that?? Reunification?? With the same race that destroyed my planet?? No frikkin way.. I dont care what Picard did, Spock purposely let us down. Donatra was my hero. I mean the way she sauntered across her bridge while smiling deliciously telling Picard "Romulan Ale captain. lets go to work". She was the empitome of Romulan all wrapped up in one beautiful package, and they made her a monster.. I dont know. With everything being the way they released it, I got and remain really upset. I felt lied too. i was told we'd be a faction, not a sub faction like the ferengi or the Gorn ( or pakled ). I want it maade right even though i know for a fact that 90% of the people that play STO are only playing it to pew pew monsters bad guys and their favorite victims.. They could care less about star trek.. But thats Ok.. If we can even get a Romulan fleet i will be overjoyed..
