I've often thought this should be a thing. Torpedoes should be deadly. The player's torpedoes, not just the NPC ones. But then, the size of the ship should determine just how many torpedoes can be carried. So, yes, all the little escorts have vastly superior gun firepower in the form of dual cannons and the agility to bring them to bear... but the big cruisers get to spray torpedoes everywhere.

One of those silly "balance" things.

Yes, but, wouldn't that actually help set certain ships apart by allowing players to make better use of their particular ship's strengths and weaknesses?;)

It's not cannon for a federation captain to pilot a tholian ship (which would be uninhabitable to humans), or for a klingon captain in a bop to have access to federation quantum torpedoes, but it's all possible in this game. Make one thing cannon, and we change the entire gameplay style.

It's actually stated in game (somewhere; possibly the reward pack description or something) that Starfleet at least partially modified or refitted the interior and life support systems to make them habitable to humans and other "normal" races...

I kind of really like this idea, as it sounds like it would pretty much negate the "tickle beams need a buff" aspect of the game by allowing cruisers to blow the TRIBBLE out of things with superior torpedo power, however, even with a much lower torpedo capacity, an escort's cannons coupled with these improved torpedoes would blow the TRIBBLE out of everything so quickly that a cruiser's superior ammo stock wouldn't matter much. The only way for this to specifically be a buff for cruisers would be to give them some sort of innate, enhanced torpedo resistance so that escorts aren't now blowing cruisers out of the water twice as quickly.

Easy, since they included the warpcores. Give ships boosts to power based on their size. Thus a big lumbering cruiser has more raw power than an escort. a balanced load on a cruiser then would look like full power to weapons and full power to shields at the same time. When they apply full power to something it means alot.

Nor should they be. Their ships would look weird.

Cruisers technically have 5 more total power than escorts or sci ships, and with [w->s] modifier and emergency power to shields and weapons, most cruisers can easily have full power to shields and weapons at the same time, this still does not save them from being torn apart by escorts, nor would these already possible full power to weapons and shields negate the sudden spike damage increase escorts would receive from this suggested torpedo buff. The only way in which a crusier having way larger torpedo stocks than an escort would be beneficial is if battles last long enough to exhaust escort torps leaving the cruisers with superior firepower. However, with everyone getting a buff to torp damage, escorts would likely tear everything apart long before their torpedo stores would deplete. And ultimately this would not be of any particular advantage to crusiers. Just like a cruiser's large crew is not a benefit. Large crews die just as quickly if not more quickly than small ones, everything is based on percentage so larger crews don't repair more/better, and larger crews take longer to come back online... so yeah.

No one will like my idea. I think there should be universal weapon slots, torpedo weapon slots and energy weapon slots on every ship. I don't care about canon, STO has beat Star Trek into a Star Trek in quasi appearance only and canon is out the window to the obvious point now that we realize the most impressive ships in the fleet are not made by federation engineers anymore. I would like to see more battles with both E and K weapons flying at me, not just beams and cannons.

Increase their damage, increase their cool down, give more exotic torpedos a weapon energy requirement for containment if you must. Just make the game more diverse.

I agree that I would like it if all ships had both torps and energy weapons like they did in the show, but one of the problems I think people run into, especially on cruiser and sci vessels is the limited number of tac powers available to them. Since torps fire one itty bitty torp every few seconds instead of a 5 torp volley, they look and are quite unimpressive without a power like high yield or spread behind them. I would like it if all torps were more like the romulan hyper plasma torp and fired a 5 torp volley that one could then use high yield on (they could have an extra bright glow to indicate they are high yield or something) which would make each torp in the volley hit harder, or spread, which could high yield the torps and then send each one at a different target. It's always been a pet peeve of mine that "high yield"= more torps rather than harder hitting torps, so i would absolutely love a change like this.

if they hard coded torps on every ship they would probably have to make torp boff powers on each ship. There is too much silliness in the arbitrary way they assign boff abilities. That was one of the things I feel they just plugged in because there wasn't a better way to fit it into the game play.
