Doing this on normal mode only, I didn't have any problems on the first 4 characters.
But on my 5th character for some reason there were WAAAAAAY to many mirror ships in the map causing extreme graphics lag and made it impossible to even complete the mission. The mirror ships camped the spawn point so we were getting killed over and over again right after respawning.
I'm not talking about a mere 20-30 mirror ships. I'm talking around A HUNDRED!
Screenshot to show what the hell it looks like. THIS IS NOT FUNNY CRYPTIC!
*Note: I wasn't able to have all the ships in the screenshot. What you see is what was at the spawn point only where you enter the mission and where you show up after you die. Ships that were too far away couldn't be seen until I was close enough, even though I have the advanced graphics settings for all detail distances up.
There were many more to the left and right and at least another 20 around the Crystalline Entity which was around 30 or so Km straight ahead.
I have 9 characters to do this on and this is making it too time consuming. I had to leave the map right after respawning before I was attacked and put into red alert, because if you end up in red alert right after respawning the only way to exit the mission is to exit the game entirely.

#1 Mirror ships won't spawn. The only time there are ships on the map is when everybody first enters and you have the few tholians and mirror ships around the entity. After those are defeated no more ships will spawn at all. When this happens it only takes about 5 minutes to complete the mission.
#2 Mirror ships seem to spawn non stop until the map is overrun with them and there is no hope to defeat the entity. All you can do is use evasive maneuvers and try to get out of red alert then quickly leave the mission. When this happens we aren't able to focus only on the entity because there will be around 30+ mirror ships all over us. We all get killed 1 by 1 before being able to do much damage to the entity. The entity seems to have an increased defense too, but that may be because I was the only 1 attacking while everybody else was respawning and trying to get back to it.
There was 1 time when I entered the mission already in progress. The crsytalline entity and about 20 mirror ships were right on top of the spawn point. Within 5 seconds of entering the mission I was killed before I could even react. I'm assuming the entity and ships got that far before somebody managed to leave and I replaced that player who left. After I respawned I immediately hit evasive maneuvers and kept clicking the warp out button until I was out of red alert then quickly clicked 'YES!' to get the hell out of there. I really feel bad leaving the players less than 60 seconds after I got there, but it was completely hopeless.
And that's another thing. If players are taking too long to complete the mission, the entity will move far away from the planet all the way to the spawn point, which is at least 30Km from where the entity starts.
Another problem I noticed. Tholian ships don't spawn at all. There are only a few sometimes around the entity at the beginning but after that, any ships that spawn are mirror ships only. Before the event, mirror ships spawning would be random and not very many would spawn at all. When the entity goes into its absorb phase, a new group of tholian ships will spawn near it, on top of any left from the previous group.
Another thing, that sound effect that happens when a rift opens in space and mirror ships come out of it, it happens constantly non-stop during the entire event, whether or not any mirror ships spawn at all. It's a pretty friggen annoying sound effect and it's starting to drive me crazy. Usually you only hear it if you are within firing range of it and the sound goes away when the rift closes on its own. Edit: It's possible there are mirror ship rifts all over the place but I can't see any of them due to too much TRIBBLE on screen. When there is too much stuff on screen some things end up completely invisible, such as my own torpedoes, or a tractor beam on me. When a tractor beam is invisible I usually wonder why the hell I can't move until I either start hearing the tractor beam sound effect, or think to look at my buffs/debuffs above my ship HP. (The rifts the mirror ships come from look a lot like the Tken's Rift boff ability)
Keep in mind (yes I'm repeating myself), that I have only done the event in normal mode since the special event started. I'd hate to see how broke it is in elite mode.
This will be addressed in an upcoming patch.

Please make no mistake that it's completable, and most are completing it without an issue. The chance of that many mirror ships is random. As Bort mentioned in his posts yesterday, the best strategy for now is to solely focus on the entity.
Additionally, the normal version of the event does reward the Shards to those eligible every 20 hours. You'll just get a tad less Marks.

Actually, counting ships on your screen shot, it is about 20-30.
As I mentioned yesterday, even for the regular version - the random thing is likely causing some of the "he said, she said" stuff that's going on regarding both the regular and elite versions. 3 stages, 5-6 things that could happen with each stage...it can be easier than it was or the impossible complaints that you see.
Nice to know that this is a known issue, and will be addressed.
I tried to run 10 CE mixed normal and elite , in 9 of the runs we got overwhelmed , you cant even approach the entity , literally over 100 mirror ships on the map , every "tyken rift" has a fleet of at least 7 ships besides it and not even counting the ones that followed killed players to the spawn point .
Ignore the ships you say and attack the entity , you die from "bleed trough" before you even get close .
I dont see why these changes implemented at the same time with the event . they should have been tested on the holodec ahead of time and then bring on the event .
In short you have allot of disappointed players .
I guess you didn't read the whole thing and see my note:
