Hello Captains!

Last week, for the first time ever, we held a 'Wallpaper Contest'. I'm excited to reveal that the PWE Community Team has met and we're ready to announce the winners!

Before we do, we would like to thank all entrants who took the time to submit their images. They were all incredible, and choosing the winning images was no small feat. You all should be very proud of yourselves, and I've got to say, we've got some awesome screenshot artists in our community!

Drum roll please...

In first place, taking home 625 STO Promo Points for the C-Store and will have their image featured as our newest wallpaper later today, please join us in congratulating...

millybun's "Generations in Formation"!

Incredible screenshot, millybun! We were all stunned at its brilliance and the meaning behind it.

And now for our runners-up, each taking home a costume of their choice (ToS Formal Uniform, ToS Medical Uniform, ToS Tunic Uniform, or Enterprise Era Uniform), please join us in congratulating...

Reminder: Images that were eligible to win needed to be original, unaltered in-game screenshots that were a minimum size of 1920x1200.

Again, congratulations to our winners, and a huge round of applause to all of our entrants. Keep up the amazing screenshots.

Until next time, this is your Cereal Host signing off!

Cheers,

Brandon =/\=

P.S. Winners, you'll be receiving a forum PM from me later today with information on how to claim your prizes.

Everyone but eradicator84 forgot they were supposed to be making desktop wallpaper for other people to use.

It's such a shame these won despite all the good images that were submitted.

Congrats to eradicator84, the only artist who won.

Will there be a screenshot wallpaper contest again? Perhaps each month? Would love to join the next one since I didn't catch this one!

I thought my entry made a pretty good wallpaper. In fact I used it as one for a while. But I guess a Klingon theme wasn't allowed.

Anyway, congrats to the winners. Three generations of ships was a great choice.

Nah, the winner's are just arbitrarily chosen. I don't think there were much of any criteria used beyond the picture size.

I can get behind the winning shot, because it really is kinda cool. Congrats.
Would have thought mine was good enough for a runner up position, but of course I am biased as anyone who entered the contest. ;)

Well art is in the eye of the beholder I guess but...I still find it hard to believe I didn't make it to the finalists given the exceptional imagery of my shot unless it was on account to some technicallity.

Thank ya'll so much for the kind comments, it was pretty shocking to me that my image won when I read it @_@

There were a bunch of other images I thought would have done just as well, but I have to admit I'm glad to see mine win after all the hours spent trying to find a good position in real time with my two friends, who I also thank for helping me out and putting up with me for a good portion of a day (and night, and early morning...>_>) flying around in a bunch of Connies, heh.

As I mentioned in the "New Wallpaper Available" topic, I thank those at Cryptic/PWE for the game, for letting me play with gorgeous ships like the Connie (tier 5, please? >_>), and for having this contest! Would love to see this happen more to see what comes out of it =)

Demorecord is part of the game, no editting happened beyond moving the camera around, and was happy to find the /renderscale command worked since I'm a slightly smaller resolution at 1920x1080. I did mention in the submission topic how and what I did, and used no outside programs or tools to edit the image.

Demorecord's really the only way to get the kind of dynamic camera angles for shots like this when you're trying to get more than one subject in an image. I could have stuck with the camera focused on myself, the Exeter, but then I'd have had to have zoomed out to get everyone in it, and the shot would be too enlarged covering empty space on the right, top, and bottom of the image uselessly.

Your image, doubleohnine, was one of the ones I personally enjoyed, I do wish they'd fix the camera zoom back to how it was >_< I like how you got it timed with the navigational lights flashing on the hull, I try to do the same with my pics which is how I end up with a screenshot folder packed full of the same image trying to get it timed right >_O

While mine is using a camera angle no longer available, it WAS a legit camera angle and pure screen shot at one time. Ive seen what demo record can do after watching tons of STOked, and had I known I was up against that tool, I wouldn't have bothered entering. I never got around to using it myself. Yours is a nice photo too.

Mine was early in my Starfleet career. My STO screenshots are still my screen saver. That's my first Excelsior class ship when my first captain was first commanding it. Hitting PrintScreen the moment I did and getting the lights to go off was dumb luck. After seeing I could catch that, Ive tried to replicate it since and its hard to time it when you're actually trying. I had just got my upgraded graphics card, but my bloom setting was a little too high back then. But it works in that shot lit up by a sun, which was actually me passing under a sector space solar system. And the one thing that bugs me is you can see a small ship out in the distance of sector space, kinda killing the tv show illusion that you'd never see another ship seemingly standing still out there as you yourself was at warp.

It was actually my first time using demorecord, though I've known of it. It's pretty handy for taking pics that aren't centered on your character/ship, and I know it's possible to do stuff like remove status icons (buffs, debuffs, etc.), but that shouldn't make it automatically better than an image like yours. All of the difficultly of getting the shot together was trying to get me and two others to perform synchronized maneuvers for many hours.

As for navigational beacons, I try to time it, watching it go a few times, then when I think it's about right I'll repeatedly smack the printscreen key until the moment's passed...and try it again a few more times to make sure I got it >_<

I too was thinking of doing one in sector space with a "warp speed" kind of shot, but it's always so full with others flying around, can never get a clear shot, so lucky to get one with little going on as it is >_O

That's why I did my warp speed shot not in sector space but on the Deferi comet map.

I suppose most shots are actually self portraits of our ships and characters. I just wanted to share a picture from what is one of the best visual locations in the game. There wasn't that many ground shots in the wallpaper section, so i submitted a ground one. I couldn't get my character off the screen so i decided to make it a holiday snap. lol

You did alter the program though with different startup parameters. Part of the program perhaps but not part of the game.

Having not known about demo record and what it can do, it does feel a bit cheaty especially as Brandon didn't mention it or its legality in the competition post.

Bit of an unfair advantage to those that knew of it imo.
Maybe next time Brandon can mention it in the comps initial post along with the resolution hack.

None the less, great shot! And I can appreciate the amount of effort that went into making it :)
Congrats to eradicator84, the only artist who won.
Lol ty. I agree mine was perhaps the most artistic, but there wasn't really any criteria on what type of shot they're wanting so it's all subjective as to whos was best.
I do love a good space scape, though without any ships in em...

Congrats to the winners, I rather liked them; I happen to love the connie refit.

I just hope the judges did not judge mine based on a comment in the thread, cause mine was a screenshot and not altered other than scaling down to the min size for entry. I used the /renderscale 1 command which made the size 3360 X 2100, which is way too big really :P.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The rules called for an "original, unaltered in-game screenshot", and using demorecord does not "alter" a screenshot. "Unaltered" referred to not using any photoshopping or image manipulation. We wanted to see actual in-game scenes with no post treatment done to the screen that was taken. I will try to include information about using demorecord to take your screenshot, and clarify what "alterations" are, the next time we run the contest.

    Cheers,

    Brandon =/\=

So, he took advantage of an unknown game exploit, and you guys rewarded him for doing so?

    How is that fair exactly?

After looking up 'demorecord' in Google, I discovered that it dealt with exploiting chatbox commands.

How many people would have known that?

    Just curious.
