Keep in mind them only allowing gold subscribers to log into tribble is temporary.
My guess is the reason being is they are adding new season 8 stuff and they don't want players to reveal any info whatsoever about it and will force them to agree to a non-disclosure agreement, which means they promise not to talk about ANYTHING they saw on the test server.
They may do like past seasons where at a later date they will have a closed beta available to all types of player accounts (gold/silver/LTS) but, based on certain criteria, will only allow certain players to test things. At that time players would probably be able to talk about the new stuff and later, before the new stuff goes live, tribble will go into open beta and ALL players will have a chance to test the new stuff and help the devs work out the final kinks. (not like it does much good. still bugs leftover from LoR, season 7, and earlier :P)
We will be temporarily bringing Tribble down later today as we prepare it to be used for testing new code. We expect Tribble to be brought back up with a new build before the end of the day.
When Tribble does become available again, it will not be to test Season 8 content. We do have a testing plan for the content in Season 8 and will provide more updates on it as it becomes available. In the meantime, the upcoming patch notes for Tribble will include further details on what will be available for testing.
Additionally, when Tribble is brought back up, only Gold Members will be able to log into the server for the time being.
Thanks,
The Star Trek Online Team
Would I still be able to patch tribble if I'm not a gold/silver? I know I wont be able to log in to the game, but I can log into the launcher then patch tribble then when the game (in tribble) launches I'll be taken to the log in screen and refused a log in. Is this correct?

This could very well be but unless they are going to revoke Tribble test privileges or ban gold/LTS accounts for spilling the beans there going to find out the hard way that gold's and LTSers can spill the beans just as quick as any silver.
I'm a silver currently and I have all way's treated what I test on Tribble as if I'm under a gag order because I don't want my Tribble test privilege's taken away.
I really do enjoy bug hunting and guerrilla stomping things to see if they will break and well it's really sad that some don't seem to share this feeling since the Dev's are making this change.
Just waiting for some kind of confirmation from the Dev's on the subject
Something not related to the patch notes; is there a reason why I can't load character/costumes during character creation on both Tribble and Holodeck? It's blasted annoying starting from scratch each and every time.

Ok, let me get this strait... You are going to take the players who are Silver, or lapsted the gold membership, and ban them from testing content. Sorry but is that really the right decision. Seeing as it kinda screams that you want my money and you want it now. What is worse is you are now counting on the fact that people will pay you to test the game. Are you for real? Is this Real LIFE? C'mon, nobody that pays to PLAY you game, will now PAY you to TEST your game. Figure that one out. I purchased the Legacy Pack after I tested as a Silver Player during the LOR Closed Beta. Dafq Cryptic?
Whats worse is this means that content will be tested on Tribble, by 1/3rd of the current testers... at best... and not go to Red Shirts (as Redshirt is Live but worthless), then go bug filled and probably not working onto live. Then I can not play the game, as I do not have a 10,000 dollar gaming rig... You really messed up on this one.
Either let the players that Test things play on your test server, or go back to a Pay to Play model. Do not expect people to pay to test.

Please read this part very carefully:
Additionally, when Tribble is brought back up, only Gold Members will be able to log into the server for the time being.
You do realize what that means, yes? it means for the time being, only subscribers can access the server. This situation is only temporary. Please keep that in mind. You will get your chance to test, but not at this time.

Please read what I type first, this is cutting out huge portions of the community, thus loosing manpower. You should not critique somebody and rush to fanboy Cryptic when they make a bad dicision.
This whole situation was done for 2 reasons.
1, the Tactical Warbird was a huge flop, way undergeard, we even tested it and it was mediocre at best. So they ignored us and they did terrible with sales.
2, they want to encourage players to pay, which paying to test a game makes no sense for me, if you are that far behind on your expectations... then just go back to a pay to play model.
Now, as for your whole temporary thing, dude.... learn to predict Cryptic, they fail us so often you can count on it. The Redshirt testing thing is a joke... Things get tested on Tribble, then put on Live... then 3 weeks after that... put on Redshirt... long after Live has been using it. Dafq?
Back when Testing on Tribble ment nothing, I was ok, because I got to see what was coming. Now we don't even get to do that... This is how MACO glitch happened, this is how Scimitar Insta-Fire happened, this is how the Subspace Rupture happened...
Most players are Silver, so cutting out the largest chunk of your playerbase... is at best crippling your ability to test. Fail!!!!!!!!!

Regarding the bolded part, I'm not worried about this, since I don't think it really matters (by the way, this is my opinion, so if you think I'm wrong, that's your prerogative).

This is how MACO glitch happened, this is how Scimitar Insta-Fire happened, this is how the Subspace Rupture happened... You don't get to do this now. That doesn't mean you're going to forever be prevented from testing on Tribble...which is the whole point of the issue. You will get that chance closer to when Season 8 is ready for testing. How difficult is it to even understand that?
Most players are Silver, so cutting out the largest chunk of your playerbase... is at best crippling your ability to test. Fail!!!!!!!!!
Stay mad then, if that's your state of mind. You should still know that it is temporary. You will get to test closer to when Season 8 is ready for testing. I think allowing only subscribers to access the server is a good thing, since it cuts out all the whining that people seem to love to do anyway.
Note: Yellow text is my answer to your statements/questions.

You seem to lack reading comprehension. So let me explain it simpler.
Do you test? If so do you test often? If often do you test 2,000 hours or more a week?
Well since the latter is impossible I am going to assume no. This means that you can not make up for even the smallest percent of what manpower was just lost. This does not encourange anybody to pay them money. It just says that Cryptic lost the ability to understand math.
For every one pay to play person, there is probably 200 or so Silver at the moment. This means we all loose. And no, we do not get to test Redshirt. Redshirt never tests anything. So all the glitches make it to live now. Stop fanboy defending. It makes you look stupid.
I think making people pay for something they have always got for free in the past is a crappy thing to do to people. I don't understand why anyone would think this makes good business sense. I don't like it, I'm not a fan of this move.
My opinion is below... Highlight if you want to read it...
By the way, the only reason the Tribble is locked for only GOLD members for a limited time is that you could say that there is some content in there that is currently in "Close Beta Test" meaning that only Gold Member got invited, then us the Silver players will get to the "Open Beta Test" don't know why people are getting mad over the aspect that they didn't get invited to test the stuff, only because they are not Gold Members.... Aaaaaaaaaaaaw, so sad.... pffft... Gotta read carefully to understand what's going on people... Don't expect that just cause it's just YOU, and only YOU, you need to get invited... Cryptic closed the Tribble for Gold Members for a reason... so what...what can you do? nothing... just wait till it is your turn to get the invite... And as for the mentioned stuff that STO is pay to test, that dose not make any sense at all... I never knew that STO was in a Close Beta Stage and that I needed to pay to test it out before it came... geeez think of what you say before you say it...
My guess is that they're doing this to limit the flood of people into the Tribble. Remember what happened during LoR when every man and his dog swarmed the place, bringing the server instantly to its knees?

Anywho... Ya'll have fun!!
So your opinion is that requiring Gold (Payed Membership) is not pay to test? Confused on that point. And is there any possible way this is not some attempt to require us to pay them money to see the content early? If so, I do not see it. Also do not use the whole Tribble can not handle the strain arguement. It is invalid at best.
If yer that pizzed off about not being able to test, then buy a lousy $15 worth of game time and see if what yer missing is worth all the ranting.

IT JUST A GAME MAN!!! you like to test the think before they actually get to the game thats good...

this condition for tribbles its for the time being.. its temporary... if they where going to actually put this forever they would have SAY THAT...

If you go back and read closely, the devs NEVER mention that the Tribble would be now only for Gold Members... I still don't understand why people don't get it... I so agree with you... It's only a game, plus the changes to the tribble access is only temporarily... I don't know why everyone understood that it was going to be permanent...
I always said Tribble was more of a "preview shard" rather than "test shard". Now it shows, more than ever...
I've got no idea what Cryptic is thinking. Are players supposed to test the upcoming content and report bugs or really just see what new bugs are coming soon and deal with it? What's up with having to pay for the privilege of testing the upcoming build?
I guess this is just temporary and all players will be able to access Tribble sometime before S8 launches, but nevertheless this is just weird. Cryptic's got all the data about players who log into tribble and how much time do they spent there, as well as (supposedly) how many bug reports they send, so why not do the same thing as with LoR and reward those players with early access?
Has anyone thought about the capacity needed if we all went over there to look all at once. it is fine let them load test the content without an avalanche. LOR was dismal in this regard.
agreed...

again.. Read Closely!!!!
Temporary.. your right, after there is nothing new to test with this launch coming up, they will open it up for 3 days prior to the actual launch and say go for it!!!!! Then we get 3 days for the general public, some of who spent a great deal trying to break things to find bugs, to find all the new ones that have been available for 3 weeks or so.... Yeah, you seem not to understand it is not the PRIVILAGE that is the issue here. It is the new BUGS that will easily go to Holodeck since the gold players are going to experience the content, then go right back to Holodeck... Some of us played with the UI, Ships, Barriers, Cloaks and other abilities in an attempt to make them break in some way. A great deal of the testers now do not do that. Temporary or not, our manpower is lost, once lost can not be recovered. This is Cryptic's way of telling me that my opinion is not important. Message recieved, I will not test for them again. Free manpower only lasts as long as the VOLUNTEERS are happy.
I noticed yesterday that the Tribble Server was gone from the Launcher and all I wanted to do was check something. I could care less about the Beta Testing and who gets to do it. My issue is, Cryptic could of put a message on the launcher as I bet I'm not the only one wondering what happened and have to get on here and search through posts to find an answer.
It seems like every single time I go to do something it's nerfed, bugged or has been taken away.
At the very least they could of put this in the Tribble Patch Notes or somewhere in that that same thread!
Cryptic has stated in many forum posts and in activating Tribble that it could be taken down any time without notice.
Though the semantics of the statement made at the beginning of this thread (you all know which one) imply that the change is temporary, I would still like a direct answer as to whether it is or not. Cryptic is notorious for ambiguity when it comes to timetables, so any more definite statement by them would be appreciated.;)
(In other words, Cryptic, please tell us whether this change will be reversed in time to test future content updates.:))
