How to advance as a group in premade PvP

A couple of days a go, I logged onto a friendly fleet's team speak just to say hi and next thing I knew, I got hit with something very rare. A whole fleet was at level 5 in The 5 stages of grief. Not 1 person, but a whole fleet. Now that's impressive in itself.

Questions like "We used to beat these guys and now they are kicking our a****. What's changed?" They could have easily said "They must be cheating" or "Cryptic screwed the game up" but they chose not to.
As soon as they realised I was on their TS, I was abused (not really). I must have been in deep conversation with them for a solid 3 hours.

The point is, they realised they needed to do something different to become more competitive.

Now that you as a PvP fleet have reached the 5th stage of grief and are open to suggestions, time to become better, faster and stronger than ever as a group.

5 stages of STO Premade Qi

Stage 1 - Create your benchmark

What do you want to achieve as a PvP fleet? Be the top dogs? If so, figure out who it is right now. YouTube is a great source of information. See if they have any matches online. Watch the videos and see what they do / did. Hopefully they're comms. is still intact in the video and not dubbed out.

Now that you've done your research, you know what you want to achieve. In effect you have set your benchmark or goal for the fleet to achieve.

Stage - 2 Got, Not got

Next stage is to figure out what roles are being played by fleets in premades based on the current metagame eg cloak vapers, spike escorts, sci healers etc etc
List all of them out. Figure out as a fleet who is currently the best in game at that particular role. Put your bias aside when you do this and try to be honest when you do this as it may be a nemesis of yours who is a legend at the said role.

Next, measure yourselves against them. You have to be brutal or else it's a pointless activity.
At this stage you will have created a map of your fleet members. You now know where you truly stand.

Make a list of other non obvious things like target caller, coordinator, secondary caller etc etc and again do the same, measure yourselves on those aspects.

Be careful of what your definition of "Best in game" is. For me as an example, the best escorts are those who not only do the damage, but are able to keep the team focused by being a great caller, able to act on info given to him / her by the rest of the team but also knows what info to ignore.
The best escorts show their worth when they're team is loosing and manage to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Stage 3 - Battle Plan

Now you have identified your strengths and weaknesses as a fleet, it's time to create your master plan.

How are you planning to stamp your dominance on others? What's your premade going to look like? What are your current strengths and how are you gonna maximise on that? What are your weaknesses and how are you gonna improve on it? Recruit, ask someone for help or train yourselves? All these things you will be able to answer yourselves as a fleet.

Stage 4 - Do the do

Now it's time to put theory into practice. Don't be disappointed too much if the first few times you go into matches, you get battered. Remember, you are doing something new and your fleet isn't used to the step changes you have made. Be patient and keep at it. Starfleet wasn't built overnight :P

Stage 5 - What happened?

To do the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome is bordering on insanity. To make sure this doesn't happen, record your matches via fraps etc and parse the logs. Once uploaded, the fleet should watch the video and make constructive comments around the video.

Straight after the match, once the adrenaline has gone make sure you discuss, as the premade that played, what went good and what went wrong. Put things in place to make sure the wrongs don't happen again and do more of the things that went well. This way, your experience as a fleet will dramatically increase. Nothing beats first hand experience.

Keep repeating Stages 3 through 5 and soon you will be well on your way to becoming PvP Goliaths.

If you need any toolsets / guidance / help with any of the above things, don't hesitate to hit me up in game.

Have fun and see you in the queues

Good stuff here Naz, and very similar to what you would find in a lot of competitive sports or other competitive activities.

Stage 7 - Back to the Drawing Board

Listen to the Grammar TRIBBLE's that pave your way to transcendental perfection. Thus, eradicate typos especially since this is a PWE game:

    its spelled "qi" not "Chi"

    Good stuff though....:p

    Done! Isn't it "spelt"?

Edit: Both can be used - google at its best.....

Going to have to disagree on that - but that would distract from what naz is trying to do with helping folks out. Which in of itself, is a bad thing - stop ruining folks' excuses. :P

Frankly, I think the only sound advice that one can give new players at this time is to stay away from PVP in STO.

Is there any way to avoid premades? Or is there a fleet that accepts casual players and doesn't have time requirements for membership?

At launch and in the first year or so, PvP was fun, even if the Klingons were generally much better than the Feds. But when PvP came to be dominated by the same premades, it got old really fast. I'd rather play a hard-fought game and lose than obliterate my opponents without any real danger of losing. Competitive PvP is what keeps people coming back.

You can skip the queues entirely and participate in a game set up on the Tyler Durden or OrganizedPvP channel - we usually hold 5v5 arenas of mixed players, and shuffle captains in an effort to balance the teams, Team Speak 3 is provided as well.

    haha more shameless promotion

I second that, many a good game from those two channels and Zenith is usually around to organise teams with no bs rules.
Now found frequenting MWO short term and then Star Citizen long term. Raged Quit PVP long ago

Tyler Durden is definately a good place to start to learn the basics of premade PvP - more fun when two equally matched opponents go at it than a one sided slaughter fest
