Will STO come to Ubuntu?

ecthaelionecthaelion Member Posts: 0 Arc User
Most of us know of the effort Steam is putting into porting to linux, and the success they have had with those ports, meaning most have run better on linux/ubuntu than in windows.

WILL we ever get a STO ubuntu version!? Should this happen I would no longer have a reason to keep Microsoft lingering on my PC, and Cryptic/Perfect World would help lead the PC gamer movement to linux.

isn't STO a directx game? So you'd basically have to rewrite the engine yes? I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Can't you just Wine it or Cedega it (whatever they call it now).
You know Cryptic has Jumped the Proverbial Shark when they introduced Tractor Pulling to Star Trek Online! :D

The STO team have managed to get it to run under Wine, so if you install that and then the came, you shouldn't have any issues.

I think asking for it to be available via Synaptic might be asking a lot though.

Valve has been hinting at doing pre-configured Wine packages for the Linux version of steam, similar to what they've done with DOSbox, doing the fiddly work of making it run correctly for you and taking away most of your options for TRIBBLE it up.

Aww but that's half the fun of Linux, TRIBBLE it up and then trying to fix it. It helps you to learn more about the OS, at least in my opinion. :)

Wine is your best shot... It can run on ubuntu, as I/we have helped several people to do so over the years.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

For now on Ubuntu it's pretty easy to get STO running with wine. If you're running 64bit remember to "export WINEARCH=win32" without the quotes of course. Then run winetricks ie8 and you'll have the required IE support for the STO launcher.

That said, I know dual booting can be inconvenient, but sometimes if you really love a game, it's worth it.

How will you fit STO into http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dmQC_g5pOoM/TgJQJHQl2LI/AAAAAAAAV3s/kGUAD8z0xsE/s900/HEAD-1.jpg when it's full of cola?? :P

Joking aside, I would not bet on it happening anytime soon.

I know the devs have said that they want to port STO to the Mac platform, but if that will actually happen is very much up in the air afaik.

Does anyone have a step by step. I love ubuntu but have never had luck with wine. Most of the time the walk throughs to get things to work tend to be outdated and incomplete (or my googling skills are vanishing)

Whats really tricky is not getting STO into wine... Download and run the installer... The tricky part is getting all the dll's on the side for DX and the other stuff.

Best thing is to have a working Windows install with STO installed nearby, so you can pick the individual files and copy them.

    Step 1: open a terminal

Step 2: sudo apt-get install wine

    Step 3: export WINEARCH=win32

    Step 4: winetricks ie8

Step 5: download the STO installer

Step 6: right click it and open with wine or run it from a terminal with "wine %installer%.exe"

Step 7: find where it installed, usually under ~/.wine/drive_c/

Step 8: wine Star\ Trek\ Online.exe or right click it and run it from the folder with wine. (yes you need to escape spaces in gnome terminal with the \)

    Step 9: Play STO

If that checklist gives you any trouble just let me know

A Mac port of this would be the next most likely step rather than a Linux port.

I would joy seeing a Linux version. For me Linux runs so much better Windows. With Steam coming to Linux now there might a bigger demand.

it runs but the performance degrades rapidly over time forcing the need to quit/restart.

I am running the game on a Linux Mint 15 with Crossover. While it wouldn't have been necessary it makes the install rather easy, which was important for me, being a total beginner and guides on the internet on this matter only leading nowhere.
The result is ok, but could be better (I have the same degradation issues), so I would love a proper Linux Port, though I heavily doubt it.
And a Mac Port is as unlikely as a Linux one. If those figures are correct: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems
Mac and Linux make up for less of 10% of the market and if that reflect to the STO users then its hardly worth the effort.

The only slight minimal chance I see here is that PWE enforces such a port once this thing takes off: http://www.canonical.com/content/canonical-and-chinese-standards-body-announce-ubuntu-collaboration

the rubbish ARC system has taken over from the old installer, unfortunatly you have to use that POS unless you happen to have a copy of the old installer.

Personally im getting sick of stuff like ARC/ORIGIN/STEAM, massive turn off for me having to install a bloated load of rubbish just so i can play 1 game, its just not worth it, its what made me buy more games on my ps3/xbox, if the pc version needed STEAM or the likes id just not bother and buy the console version of the game.

sad to see more games turning into the same as EA/ORIGIN, damned infuriating.
