A veteran reward is a VA ship so if you have the vet reward tier 5 is not the last free ship.
It is a 600 day vet reward one VA token.
True, but I wasn't being that specific. I was only sustaining what he said, because I said the last free ship was tier 4. I was thinking 5 but wrote 4.

Just to make sure that no-one is confused, however. The level 50 (VA) ship token that you can get is a vet reward is ALSO T5, and just gives you access to more options, none of which are any better or worse.
In fact, on the Fed side most of the free VA ships are quite lackluster and out shined by their RA counterparts. (They are however much beloved ships from the TV)
It seems that many of the threads I have been reading are for players that have advanced much further than I have. Where are some starting guides for a less than a week old player? I have a little trouble using the controls to move my player and my ship. any help is much appreciated.
New to STO, so hi! My name is Aaron and I'm a closet trekkie (luckily my gf is supportive of my inner nerd)
Have a few questions stumping me. Luckily from other forum boards the "Search" function answered them partially.
1) Escorts suck!! I want a tank...so I'm gonna stick with Fed Cruisers I think. MY poison seems to be the Polaron route. It's more pretty. No really it seems to deal the most damage per hit (shields/subsystems/etc). Question: Is the Fed Cruiser the best option for the fluidic space Borg PvE missions (Elite or 2 chevron moderate)? -trying to beef up Omega Rep. P.S. That Borg PvE mission against the queen is TRIBBLE!! Unless you're Rom, any Fed ship seems to be cannon fodder while the Romulan ships deal the van-damage.
2) What the hell is DPS!? Damage Per Second?
3) What is BOFF...or DOFF?
4) Where can I find the Shipyard thread to see builds?
5) Duty Officers: what good does placing them active or reserve do? The more officers I have enable me more missions?
6) Dilithium store: weapons/gear: Is the store worth it? Or should I look at the auctions?
7) I'm sick of those damn little "scan anomalous whatever" drops. What are they for? I'm holding onto the ohhh say 5,000 different thingamajigs in my Bank because they must be for something. I guess.
8) This is more of an observation -Cryptic you need to take a lesson from Square Enix on your MMORPG style. The ease at which I blew through the story line was kind of anti climatic (Federation side)...
Thanks for the help guys/gals, and sorry for the noobliness!

To be honest I don't know about starter guides. Most I've learned was either by trial/error or by reading the wiki/googleing for something. And of course reading the forum.
What trouble are you experiencing with movement?

Hi
1-Escorts don't suck, it's just a different playstile. I prefer cruisers myself, but I admit it's usually a slower job. To be honest there is no "best" although there are a few better than others, but it mostly comes down to your playstyle and build. Not speaking for myself as I consider me to be so-so, but I have seen completely awsome ships of every type. So, as long as you do it right, there is no need for a specific ship and it really doesn't matter if you are Fed, Kling or Rom.
2-Yep, Damage per second. Note that as in other games, sometimes higher DPS doesn't really mean higher damage overall. It depends on other factors.
3-BOff - Bridge Officer - The ones you assign to active stations on your ship. They have abilities that buff/heal/improve your ship's performance, or even hinder the enemy. Some can be used on friendly players either solo or the whole team.
4-DOff- Dutty Officer - These are used for sector missions to gather XP and resources. You also have 10 (5 ground and 5 space) slots to assign Doff to your ship more or less like the BOff, but the skills they have are passive, not activated at will like the BOff's. They usually provide % chance for things to occur, such as less time for torpedo recharge, or an extra chance to fabricate another turret on ground.
5-Reserve Doff, are usable. It just means they are not assigned anything. You can assign them to a space/ground slot as stated in previous paragraph, or use them to complete sector missions. More doesn't mean you have more missions (availability) per se, but it means you will be able to start more missions (actively) especially providing you have a greater variety of DOff's (they have careers).
6-In my personal opinion, not really. You can use what you find in the game and when you need better equipment the exchange is a better place. But that is up to you.
7-They are used for some missions, and for crafting. You can produce your own items with them. Some are rare and you can even sell them on the exchange.
