*Possible* fix for nvidia driver crashes post LoR

awesominator6000awesominator6000 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
Ok, so I say possible because I'm still testing this, but so far it's looking rather promising,

I have an nvidia GTX580 (1.5GB), plenty for STO even if I run it 2560x1440, nearly everything maxed. Tested all fine and dandy on Tribble before launch, but shortly after, my driver kept crashing for various reasons.

Sometimes I heard the fan just stop, blank screen, alt+tab out and there was a nice D3D error about a 15x15 texture, others it was the nVidia driver stopped responding and sometimes I even got a good ol'Cryptic oops. My biggest gripe when it was working, was that my fan was deffo working harder almost as if there was a mem leak.

So, using a combination of MSI Afterburner (to check my cards performance and health in game, as I have two monitors), and using "showfps 1" and "showmem 1" I was able to see that even though my card is forcibly set to "1024MB+" it still reported it ran out of VRAM @ 800MB and started to cull texture quality.

Anyways, I digress, enough was enough, I did some research. Recently my card drivers updated to 320.18, so I trawled the nVidia forums for people in other games reporting some very similar issues.

After cross referencing some info on the nVidia forums and a Microsoft technet article, it appears that we may have been subject to an extremely unfortunate set of circumstances,

Microsoft updated their D3D backend in "KB2670838" see here (mine reported it was installed on 30/03/2013), nVidia updated driver 320.18 in the past few weeks (which apparently doesn't play nice with the particular windows update), and LoR was released, culminating in this unfortunate mess...

Long story short, I've uninstalled this particular Windows update and noticed things are back to as they were before, nice smooth 60ish FPS, no texture popping as yet and decent VRAM usage. Fingers crossed it will remain this way :)

It would be good to see other people's experiences, and of course, good luck :)

    This is amazing!

    Excellent find!!!

I just started having similar issues over the weekend. Every time I transitioned to New Romulus (command center or staging area) the game crashed with odd video memory errors.

Even though I am not running a nVidia card, I'm running a AMD Radeon 6300, I will give this a tray.

    Much thanks!

Ok, so I kinda forget to say how to stop it from re-installing after you remove it should it be the cause.

    For Windows7 users;
go to Control Panel >> System and Security >> Windows Update >> Select updates to install

    "Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)"

right click it, select "Hide Update", or if you have the option in Windows 7 Pro (as I can't remember), select the option that says "don't prompt me again about this update"

To uninstall it in the first place go to Control Panel (if in Category view) go to "Uninstall a program" select "View installed updates" on the left hand side. Top right corner of the window just search for the KB number "KB2670838", double click to uninstall, let it do it's thing, reboot when prompted.

Admittedly, I haven't gone through the release notes of this particular update yet, so I'm not entirely sure if it's a tweak or an update or a rebuild of the D3D engine, but considering the impact I've been experiencing before me un-installing it and that I consider my-self a Professional due to my job, I'm prepared to take the risk.

IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT OF YOU MACHINE'S STABILITY AFTER UN-INSTALLING THE UPDATE, BACK UP YOUR MACHINE FIRST!
There are numerous tools on the net from reputable places, such as www.download.com etc

    good luck :)

It didn't just effect the 320.18 driver. It was affecting the drivers that were in use when that particular windows update was released. While MS created the issue I don't believe amd or NVidia has corrected the issue. BTW you should be using the 314.22 driver as the 320.18 driver is causing many issues. I never bothered to remove that problematic update and have had zero issues. But then again I research before updating drivers as that seems to save me from having to uninstall TRIBBLE and reinstall TRIBBLE.

Many people have found that removing that update has fixed their problems so if you have this problem then do as the OP suggests. Or just try using the 314.22 driver instead and until NVidia and MS get their dung together. And as we all have different setups neither driver may be the best for your particular rig. Don't you just love computers and their wackiness.

As an FYI, it does not appear to be an issue amongst the vast majority of users in STO. I've used the updated NVidia driver for the last week and have experienced no problem.

If this is what i think it is.It is the nvidia update from Microsoft this update is a very bad add on.It has a really bad effect and i seen it in Xp as well. When it comes to updates like these from Microsoft it is all ways best to keep them off system. All ways go with the nvidia updates.

But never use the Beta software from nvidia. This is all so can be a bad thing as well.

Well, it seems that worked for me. I'm using a GeForce GT 430 and immediately after LoR everytime I landed on New Romulus Staging Area the game crashed with that 'D3D error about a 15x15 texture'. So I uninstalled the damn KB2670838.

Besides that, I also erased these files: object.hogg, texture.hogg, texture2.hogg and texture3.hogg from the piggs folder inside the Live folder. So the game downloaded those again (just in case that was also part of the issue).

    Anyway, thanks awesominator6000! :)

    P.S.: I'm using the 314.22 driver.

UPDATE: The crashing now is only on New Romulus (Staging Area). Fewer times but still there.

OK, I have an update on this.

I removed the KB update, and I am no longer getting the memory error.

But, I am still crashing out while at New Romulus staging area. No other map gives me this problem.

I have read a couple of posts around the forums and tried almost everything I've seen.

My drivers are up to date.

I set my video to full screen, was a window maximized.

Changed my DirectX setting to Auto, 11-Beta, 9 (series 1 and 2)

Changed BOffs, changed characters, but always, the staging area will crash.

Sometimes not right away. If I beam onto the transporter pad, yes it will crash right away.

If I have a Rom character, and I get there from the commande center, it may take a while for the game to crash, or if I was already there, and logged in someplace around the staging area, it will crash later. Most of the time, while near the bridge to the Epohh fileds.

No other area of the New Romulus crashes for me. This just started with LoR. So I am at a loss.

Any advice from those out there with video experience would be greatly appreciated..

I'm not sure if my issue is related to this, but I'm gonna guess it might be partially. I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8. Loaded several things, including STO onto the machine. Tried to play STO and the PC crashed/restarted. I've been on the phone with HP technical support for the past 3 days testing this, that, and the other thing. In fact, I'm waiting a call from them to try one last thing before they're gonna have me ship it back to them to investigate.

At first I thought it was just STO, but I tried a youtube video and it did the same thing. Updated to the latest drivers on my GEForce 660 Nvidia and youtube seems to work fine now. I even got to warp around in STO for all of 2 minutes before it crashed/restarted again. So I don't know if it has something to do with the updates or what, but it's certainly a frustration having something new out of the box do this.

....I am having a similar problem, except I get a 2-D texture render fail or something(I have a picture just not at my fingertips) almost everything else this other gentlemen posted seems to mirror my problems......I tried ramping down the quality a little bit and that seemed to help, but I've been able to run the game full blast up until LoR.......also I'm not a computer guy so apologies for my jargon......
