No swimsuits on a summer vacation paradise island. That's... incredibly disheartening.

I mean, I'm sure it'll all be fun times, and I'm interested in seeing what the other items up for grabs are beyond the corvette, but lacking swimwear of any kind for players is a major letdown. How can you just skip over something so synonymous with summer at a summer event?

Unearth enough of the [horga'hns] and you can earn even more Lohlunat favors.

Collecting horga'hns for "favors" is possibly the single most suggestive thing I've ever seen Cryptic write. I giggled like the manchild I am at heart.

Think about all those Alien abominations running around. What does an almost naked Klingon look like ? Spikes and ridges on...parts of his/her body ? It would be a monumental task to redesign all those body models and have skin texture and species specific "traits" added.

I'm not sure I buy that. The mirror uniform top is almost a bikini.

They give us options all the time to use clothing that reveals texture mismatches, etc. Put a Rigelian in any outfit that reveals below the neckline. Matching textures has not hindered the release of many c-store outfits.

Only plausible reason I could think of for this to make any sense what so ever is that the Federation invited the Klingons to Risa for peace talks which the Klingons begrudgingly agreed to. With the concession that they would be allowed to provide their own security teams since they wouldn't trust the federation to provide security and like wise the Federation brought their own security since they don't trust the Klingons.
Which would also explain why everyone was in uniform. Then as the event ends talks break down and the war continues as before.

Unfortunately the official explanation seems to be mind numbingly stupid...that Risa is carebear land and because they decided they like everyone , everyone should come to their planet for a big party...just because.

So the KDF will be bringing all their warriors and warships to park at this Federation world with no defenses ... just because? Hmm.. no Starfleet concerns what-so-ever - just because?

Will they all be bring weapons down to this world?? I thought weapons were forbidden on Risa?? Just because?

Cryptic better disable weapon visuals or slotting on Risa - they are not allowed - unless this is also some war-time exception - just because?

Well Chancellor Gorkon brought his warship into federation space while escorted of course , which the federation players could be representative of. Granted it's a bit of a stretch but at least it's semi plausible. I didn't really have much to work with given the whole idea of Klingons on Risa during a war is ridiculous.;)

Would it be too much to ask for an actually FREE ship on a day that isn't special or STO's anniversary?

These events are impossible to complete for the people that cant log in every day for weeks. If its three weeks long make the ship require 3 runs and give more people a chance to get in on the fun.

Oh dear - I suspect rage on the horizon. Though I must admit, the lack of swimwear does make a mockery of vising a tropical paradise.

No rage here... but its definitely a downer.
I think you are missing my point. it isn't a blanket "No you can't have swimwear in star trek". What CBS doesn't want (and again, this is me stating what is my understanding of the situation as state by Devs, I have no inside knowledge, and never pretended to) is having Captains flying around their spaceships with swimwear, going around on away missions in swimwear, or fighting the borg in swimwear.

Say what you will about the Orions, but that is canon. That is what they wear in the series. Starfleet on the other hand, does not go on a first contact mission in their underwear, or greet a special diplomat in swimwear.

    So to summarize:

    Swimwear WHEREEVER: CBS is against.

Swimwear on RISA: CBS is NOT against, but you need tech in game that says yes to risa and no everywhere else.

This is the hang up and I can only assume that the tech needed to restrict swimwear to Risa and only risa is more complicated they we realize and the Team, with everything else they have been working on, just didn't have the time to implment it for this event.

Do you play STO? Considering the amout of ridiculus unfitting clothes you could already wear during all of the situations you named its a void argument.

Looks good so far. I will stop by there for some summer fun. Not sure what I will get for outfits or the ship. But I have a few days to decide who gets what. My KDF got the Breen ship. So I can see either my Fed or Romulan with this new one.

I'm not only disappointment by this horrible news, I am very angry.

I believe there is more to this than tech limitations with regards to the no swimwear. It is definitely not a CBS issue, and I know for a fact it is not a tech issue. Its really about ensuring topless male player characters are not present in the game (unless you roll a Male Orion or Gorn on the sadly neglected KDF faction).

Swimwear has existing for female characters since the TOS Mirror Universe outfits came out. In addition, females also have a "cropped" winter jacket, which simply simply does not make sense. But for males, especially on the Fedside and now, the new Romulan *faction*, a Risa summer event was the only way you would have been able to get it (in theory). So imagine the excitement for a lot when it was hinted (via that leaked Tribble), but a huge disappointment when Cryptic decided not to implement the much awaited swim wear.

The irony is Star Trek is second only to Conan the Barbarian, amongst IPs used in MMOs, where shirtless males are an integral part of it. From TOS to the new JJAbrams movies, numerous instances of shirtless captains and crew have appeared. But for one reason or the other, Cryptic chooses not to implement it in this game, even though other Cryptic games such as City of Heroes, Champions Online, and the brand new NeverWinter shows that they can. Ironically, both SOE and Bioware allowed topless males for their Star Wars MMOs, which do not have shirtless males (except for some EU characters that most people haven't heard off).

It sickens me that some people in Cryptic just can pass their own prejudice and simply honour the IP and allow people to dress up their male characters as skimpy as the females.

Whoa now. I'm just as disappointed at no swimwear as anyone else, but I can't see any prejudice on Cryptic's part here. They did just post a guest blog on diversity which is completely against prejudice. In Shangdu they put a human male stripper wearing nothing but some briefs up on the stage. No shirt, no shoes, just a banana hammock. I can see the tech issues being the reason here, but I'm afraid I just can't agree on the prejudice thing in light of the two things I just mentioned.

So in order to get a Risian Corvette I have to get 1000 Risian pearls. Ok, fair enough. And in order to get the pearls I have to dance to get the Lohlunat favors to purchase a floater. Seriously, I have to prance around like a blithering idiot to get these? No thanks, I'll pass and wait for the winter event.

And why can't we dress up like that male stripper then? There is your *swimwear* right there! And yet when you go to the tailor, no drop down.

Personally, I have been waiting for this opportunity since a screenshot of Risa was shown in Massively.com a few days before open beta. And in Season 1, dstahl, before he became Executive Producer (and this was even before his pre-Zynga days), even started a thread discussing the "swimwear" issue to gauge community opinion. The thread was off course, very polarize, which he also admitted is the same reaction that was happening within the Cryptic office.

So yes, I don't know who in Cryptic is prejudice here, but the fact of the matter is, STO is the only Cryptic game that won't allow male "swimwear", and STO is the ONLY MMO that is hosting a summer event without "swimwear". But for Winter Events, we can have *FEMALE CROP JACKETS*, which doesn't make sense...other than to treat female chars as sex objects...

So forgive me for being a bit cynical, but I believe this no swimwear is really an issue with male being topless, nothing more nothing less.

In the picture of the Corvette, it has a name and two digit number on the side. Will we be able to name and number it once we acquire one?

For the people complaining "Why are the KDF allowed to come? Don't you know there's a war on?" You folks ever heard of an armistice, or a ceasefire?

With the that out of the way, this event looks like it will be fun :)

But it does bring up several long standing issues with STO and Cryptic.

Lack of Swimwear; I share the criticism and disappointment at the lack of swimwear.
    Why haven't we got these options in game already? We know you have some of it done already, and know how to do it;
    • You've had a caitian male in a speedo, partycrashing the anniversary events for years.
    • In LoR you added a guy in a speedo to the club on Nimbus.
    • There's canon and licensed works referencing what various alien anatomies look like;
For those species where no existing reference exits, use creativity and initiative.

Seriously Cryptic, your character team modelled a barefoot option and made three-quarters/rolled up pants? just go the extra inches and give us bare male legs already!

Yes I know, CBS wants to make sure things don't get too silly. Heaven forbid someone makes a mockery of their beloved IP.

So you need to tech to keep the sillyness confined, well as others have already pointed out, you've shown you have some if not all of it. Time to bring it together Cryptic!

Instead of putting all your people onto the next big thing, why not have a small team or two, working on things you've been meaning to give us for years, but they keep getting delayed or falling off the radar?

    Another Limited Accessibility Project
Several times now we've heard Dan and other devs say, they do things to get maximum bang for buck, ROI and all the other things to make us feel our subs n c-store money is being well spent. That they make things with maximising re-usability and replay-ability in mind.

Yet we have; Winter Wonderland, Utopia Planitia, Hearts and Minds, and now Risian Restort

Four projects, that took hundreds, if not thousands of man hours to develop, but will spend more hours in Cryptics' 'disney vault' than not. There's a reason Disneyland stays open all year, so it can make money all year!

Now I'm not saying all the events and opportunities of these special areas should be available 24/7/365. But the maps should be.

What really grates on me, is when Cryptic does this in one move, and then says "we don't have the time to do that" or "we can't justify the man hours".

Overall I'm looking forward to the event and will be attending, but while I'm on the beach or gliding over the resort, I won't be able to escape the thought of Ctyptic not going all the way when they know they could have.

When Cryptic does this it's like someone cooking you a nice meal, but making you serve it yourself, even though they're capable (actually there's a much better analogy, but its not usable on the forums). In the beginning it's disappointing, the more it happens it gets frustrating and annoying, eventually its just sad.

It's hard for me to believe that CBS is like, "Federation captains flying Breen, Jem H'dar, and Dominion ships.... Yeah, why not? Wait, did you say bikinis.. bikinis! Heavens forbid we see skin in Star Trek! It's just not canon. GR would object."

That's because its not a CBS issue, and it is also not a Perfect World issue. Its a Cryptic issue, plain and simple.

Cryptic should just bite their prejudicial tongue and make a minor change in their code so "bare chested" can be available for male characters via the tailor.

Personally, I don't care how they implement it, whether its via this event, a C-store purchase, lockbox, lobi, Steam promotion, and so on...THEY SHOULD JUST DO IT!

The mere existance of male Orions and at least two examples that I can think of of clear and intentional instances of support of male-on-male sexuality make your claim that Cryptic is somehow bigoted and out to stomp all over your desire for eye candy utterly laughable.

And the mere existence of the winter cropped jacket shows that Cryptic is somehow bigoted and gender biased. There is no reason to implement "swimwear" already in the game, such as the one in the Stronghold mission, the Risa NPCs, the various barechested aliens (also seen in Stronghold), to players other than some desire not to have players choose those options in public areas. Unless you're a female of course, be as skimpy as you can fighting the borg...

really really - Gene? I mean Kirk had his shirt ripped off or taken off in every 3rd episode. There were girls in bikinis or just as much clothing in every 3rd epsiode to.

The JJtrek movie just out made a HUGE scene of having the new Blond babe show up in her underwear - it was plastered on trailers and pictures everwhere- and the movie are PG!!

Come on - there really has to be a better excuse than CBS.

The real issue and wacky thing is that a little skin in a video game is faux pas in America - but on T.V prime time or PG movies its ok??
