Because a cloaking device isn't a consumable item.

lots of non consumables go in the device slot

    : Red matter capacitor

    : Nimbis pirate distress call

    : subspace field modulator

i'm sure there are some more.

Neither is Subspace Field Modulator or Nimbus Pirate Distress Call and they each go in device slots.

You guys are really talking about sacrificing canon for balance?

Then you have the same people arguing a ship can't be like this, or a torpedo can't be like this blah blah because it "goes against canon."

What hypocrites man. As long as YOU (the general public) agrees with it, then it makes it okay. But if they don't 'No you can't do that!! It goes against canon!!!"

    How convenient.

If you really want to apply the same logic to the Subspace Field Modulator that should be a console too.

Seriously this game has gone way beyond canon, saying anything is canon is a cop-out to justify your own argument. Or the argument on Cryptic's side for that matter.

Odd i've never had to slot my nimbus pirate distress call in a device slot to be able to use it, I just keep it in my on character inventory and i can slot it to the tray fine.

both the Red matter and subspace modulator are essentially non-consumable battery type devices with 3min cds.

IRRC the http://sto.gamepedia.com/Console_-_Universal_-_Cloaking_Device used to be a part of the ship, but enough players complained that they wanted an extra console slot so it was turned into a console that players could equip and use or not equip and have the extra console slot but that was before the game was F2P.

Welcome to MMO forums where players beg the devs to change something, then complain about the devs giving them exactly what they asked for and demand it be changed back. :D

I came back when the Cloaking DEVICE was a separate DEVICE. I was like "wtf is this."

Oh cool i could equip it on one of my others ships: NOPE. Some reason you just can't.

Okay it's a device, let me put it in my dev--- um wtf?

Yeah this just makes absolutely no sense, sorry. If you want to defend Cryptic go ahead, that's what everyone does.

and sorry, a regular cloak is only good for first strikes, after you are uncloaked and attacked you basically have sacrificed your life, because you can't recloak and you lose one slot on your ship that could go to something more useful. Normal cloak is just for show after awhile, it really does nothing useful for you. It has no bearing on your DPS in the long run at all.

    OT: I didn't notice Nimbus was non-consumable, I guess I start using it :D

Regarding the cloak, it's really weird the FED are the only faction with cloak in console, while other, now two factions, have it built into ships, not taking the console slot away.

Note that I have neither defiant-r, nor dread, so I do not care that much, but it seems a bit unfair.

If they made it an innate ability, you couldn't transfer the ability from the Retrofit Defiant or Galaxy X to the Fleet Defiant or Sao Paulo.

If they give all those ships innate cloaking (which they shouldn't) they'd have to give up something else in return.

If ships are designed with cloaking devices in mind then it should be integral to the ships function. Fed ships included.

Galaxy X and Defiant Retrofit, get rid of the slot hogging console and make the GX and Defiant Retro'd cloaks standard equipment like the Romulans and KDF.

That would assume the Galaxy and Defiant classes were designed for their cloaking devices...which they were not.

KDF ships mostly give up hull and shields. Romulan ships give up turn rate and power levels.
KDF ships give up their hull and shields for their turn rate.

Guess what the Vorcha gives up for its cloaking DEVICE, though? A DEVICE slot.
