In MMO's i like to mix it up a little, use the tools which are not part of the norm, and STO is no different.
I love using melee, in fact recently, I was part of an all-melee squad on a ground STF elite(khitomer in stasis) and it was brilliant! the Borg never stood a chance, and we got the optional with time to spare. This happened, as with Melee, you dont have to worry about shields, and because melee weapons score more crits, and generally have a higher DPS (due to the lack of range). Oh, and no frequency modulations! yay!
I Decided though, that instead of players holding the weapons, I wanted to see how my NPC away team do. My current team consists of:
Me (Klingon) - Tac - Lobi Crystalline Sword
Orion Female - Sci - tsunkatse falchion
Orion Female - Eng - tsunkatse falchion
Orion Female - Tac - Shattering Crystalline Sword
Nausican Male - Tac - Naausican Tegolar Sword
Yeah, plenty of Orion ladies I know, but i assure you they are all wearing the full Bortasqu' Uniform, so they are completely covered!
I kept away from the Bat'leth and the Lirpa, as they tend to have a much slower hit rate. With this away team, I was amazed to see that we were taking enemies out pretty much as soon as we came across them. I have never seen effectiveness from a genre of weapons in STO. After seeing the effectiveness, I am not switching back to energy weapons ever again!
Forget energy weapons, try going total melee with your away team, and practise on the scorpions at Nimbus III. Once your confident, then head for the stronghold, and try attacking pirates You'll find they will fall so fast that they will all be dead before you get your third swing in!
Recently, I have seen a huge increase in players who are religious with Melee, and its made my STF missions a lot easier! I hope to see much more.
Does anyone else run an all-melee away team? What would you like to see improved? I would love to see the hit rate on the Lirpa and the Bat'leth increased. I can accept that to keep with balance, the DPS may have to drop slightly, but I would be happy with that.

A Sci with a medic kit really rocks as a melee fighter. Swords as the best melee weapon.
DO give them two lunges.
I totally agree. All of my Tacs (I have 3 in total) all have lunges. I see my boffs do a lunge, take off 400-500 hp in one shot, and if their target is still alive after that, normally just one swipe from their weapon is enough to finish them off. i suppose this is why every encounter I get into with my away team is over in just a few seconds!
I also spent a respec token to adjust all my traits and skills to give an equal advantage to space and ground combat, especially with melee in mind. Many players make their captains skill top-heavy for space skills, but keeping them even is the best option methinks.
Just wish there was more of a selection of melee weapons!!!
I would like to add that If anyone needs players for STF's exclusively for melee, then find me ingame as I would be happy to join in!
Using Melee weapons in ground battle is great! I usually only give my warriors (tactical) officers, those weapons and my own character, so that half the team is attacking up close , while the other half is doing it at a safe distance. So if the melee attackers lose, at least the ones firing weapons will be standing still to hopefully finish the battle.
Cheers,
Brandon =/\=
I think STO is the greatest game online right now.
and God Bless all whom work so hard on it.
Pretty Fun? Its brutal! lol
When you give the away team ranged weapons, I find their rate of fire is never up to speed. Give the away team melee weapons, and they go absolutely nuts!
Even if your dealing with a Borg boss, or the elite drones, get everyone surrounding them all with melee. The elites and bosses hardly get any hits in, because they constantly change targets and never get any hits in. Its nice to see that you can indeed run rings around the ground STF's so long as the players leave their pew-pews at home
Oh and Branflakes, Will we ever see the Nanopulse weapons making a return, like the Bat'leth and Lirpa? I wouldn't like to wait till christmas to get a chance of getting them! Can they be put in the lobi store?
Try it, I promise it will make you smile with glee when you see your away team knocking seven bells of 'stuffing' out of anyone that comes close to them.
I'm also going to try today to have my away team completely unarmed. i'll test them with the scorpions on Nimbus III, then i'll put them against the pirates in the area, see how they fare.
EDIT: I have to add this as well. I have noticed that with ranged weapons, the away team don't use their skills as often as they should be doing, with melee, they use them much more. I wonder if this is something other people have spotted with an all-melee away team, or if its something not yet noticed by others...
I spent most of my time chasing running foes. It seems ranged mobs start running everytime someone gets to melee range, except for borgs. Considering I was a sci, lunge was not an option. I'm not even sure I made 2 hits in a row.
I found it to be rather annoying, and dropped the weapon.
I can't imagine the enemy npc's would have run for long, I never seem to have an issue with this, but when you get enemies running around you it can be quite annoying. this is the exact reason why I am not fond of Bat'leths and Lirpas.
With the swords, they have a much faster 'recoil' (for want of a better word) than the bat'leth or Lirpa. because of this, you get a faster KB on the enemy. Once you knock them down once, they never get the chance to get up with the sword weapons in the game.
With Borg, KB is vital. one suggestion I would give to the Devs is to increase the 'recoil' speed of the bat'leth and Lirpa.
Or you could have few Science captains with Tachyon Harmonics.
No probs We would all love to get all the elites completed for own own player records. Not many people love ground STF's because they don't understand how to combat the Borg properly. Many drones have shields to break down, plus all the remodulating you have to do. Also, as your firing ranged weapons at them, they will be firing back without interruption. The advantage to melee is this:
1) You dont have to worry about shields, so the borg will fall in half the time they do with ALL ranged weapons.
2) Melee weapons gives you knockbacks, which means you can interrupt the Borg's attacks constantly, leaving them with little chance of getting any good attack in on you.
3) NO MODULATIONS! yay!
I still laugh when I see players trying to take borg out with sniper rifles from a distance thinking that they are safe. There is one thing to know about borg drones, if you can hit them, they can hit you. Ground STF's are done in half the time when everyone is on melee. I've now seen it done multiple times.
When the **** did this happen? I'll have to test this out for myself.
I'm not sure dude, but give it a try. try it at an easy location like Nimbus III or new romulus, and give those enemy NPC's a good spanking
Try the single-hand swords - the first swing on both 1 and 2 include a dash-to-close. It's the reason I like them so much better than the Lirpa or the batleth.
I have a Nanopulse Bat'Leth and I never use it.
Why not? Because it attacks the shield.
Yeah, this is a puzzle to us all. They reconfigured the Nanopulse weapons to act as ranged weapons without the range. So they go to the trouble of designing these weapons, have them so they are so rare you can only get them once a year (hopefully this year as well), then they nerf it to an almost completetly un-usable state. The MK X batleth can take out borg faster than the Nanopulse one!.
Its not like they were OP weapons, so I would love an official answer as to why they did this.
I would like these though, at least to add to my collection

I think with the very very limited melee weapons available, the Tholian sword is my weapon of choice as well. I have a second sword which i gave to one of my away team, and she is brutal with it. I will be earning more to give to the rest of my away team, though I like my Nausicaan to keep his MK XII tegolar sword, keeps one character original then
I've looked into buying the C-store melee pack as well, as its only 300 zen, but are they really worth it? apart from the skin, they apparently only offer a small percentage increase in crit chance, which is pathetic IMO. Has anyone else bought these? are they worth it?
Aside from that, the Caitian/Ferasan assignment chain unlocks a rare repeatable doff assignment that awards quality melee weapons, though I haven't seen it come up often.
I never knew about going back in the Coliseum. If you have a rack of weapons, does it only give you one rare weapon, or can you just pick up as much as your inventory holds?
I am not that fond of melee weapons in eSTFs. Especially not in missions like Infected_Ground where people rush across the trigger lines and start the assimilation process - or tend to pull the entire room unneccessarily in Kithomer_Assault_Ground or the final stage of Infected_Ground.
Yes, melee weapons can be nasty. Yet I still prefer the Honor Guard/Adapted MACO rifle - a pulsewave gun with a grenade launcher. As You can pulsewave an entire group that stands close together. Nice combination with a Scientist using his Physics kit and Geologists that may cause a Phasic Instability. Engineers love that with Mines and Bombs (well, not so much anymore since the proximity fuse went out for the latter) as well.
I should mention that the

and the

do cause an Energy-type damage - to which the Borg may adapt.

Free Gear and where to get it
Well the energy whip is a ranged energy weapon first of all, so it is not a melee weapon (I wasted lobi finding this out) and secondly, the tholian sword gives energy damage only when its charged, and that is in addition to the melee damage. Also, thankfully, the Dev's haven't caught onto this yet. If they do nerf the sword in the next update, I shall hold you responsible for bringing it up
Melee is fun, I run a Tac with the close combat kit for my KDF Romulan and it's great. My only complaint is 90% of enemies will run away from you if you get close so Sweeping Strikes is about useless aside from kicking someone a couple times while they're down after a Lunge or Stun Grenade. The only ones who will reliably not run away are Borg and Tholians, as Borg are just too slow moving to go far before being knocked down again and most Tholians seem to come with standard melee attacks.
My other KDF character is an Orion with a full Orion away team, because Seduce is such a hilariously effective ability. I tried mixing it up with a couple Letheans to try out Rapture but it didn't work as good as Seduce.
I like Nausicaans for melee boffs though, give a Nausicaan Ambush and Stealth Module and watch them 1 shot most things with Lunge. The Jem'Hadar boff and Klingons are also good.
oh, and sweeping strike is so awesome, you dont even need a sword, i love using kits with it, it decimates anyone that gets close to me. it deals more damage then a melee weapon im pretty sure.
Did it actually get fixed where boffs actually use melee weapons?
I would love to see a melee only group complete IGE optional. We need melee weapons with better AoE abilities.
As far as I know you can pick up multiple weapons, so you should be able to get a full batch of Falchions or Bat'leths on replay. Keep in mind that you'll need some free inventory space to finish the rest of the mission.
Using melee weapons was one of the first things I learned at ground STF, have been carrying a sword as 2nd weapon ever since  Even changed my keybinds so I can switch weapons pretty quickly during battle, which seems essential on missions like Mine Trap and Khitomer ground STF.
I agree with the earlier post(s) about the Nanopulse weapons; although they look pretty awesome they're not so much more than cosmetic gadgets, I'd love to see something fixed on them. Seeing that the Crystalline sword can be charged with energy and still penetrate shields in that state... Shouldn't be too difficult, I'd think.
