Or they could just not have massive gaps in their software or tech.

They take the system down REGULARLY for mait. The constant CRASHES is the issues; not the mait.

No software or hardware is 100% reliable 24/7 (even with regular maintenance.) Absolutely mission critical stuff (say where peoples actual lives depend on it) usually have a lot of failover/backup capacity; so if a critical system fails, there's enough redundancy that the end user sees no interruption in service/capability.

In the end, this (STO) is a game; and no one's going to be hurt if/when something happens to the server. I'm sure they do have a certain level of failover as they don't want to loose money if they can avoid it - but they don't have the same level of redundancy a truly critical system has.

The server also has been more stable (this is the first crash in about a week); and they also stopped the daily maintenance they were doing for two weeks straight.

I think it's pretty obvious either the response and retention was higher than anticipated; OR they do have a supply chain issue (DStahl did claim that some of the new hardware they got initially failed out of the box - up to you if you believe him or not.)

In the end though we all have two choices:

    - Stick it out.

    or

    - Move on to another game you also enjoy that in your eyes also has a better uptime quotient. (and maybe look back in on STO in the future if it appears they have their house in order.)

so by this hour I would have completed enough to get atleast 100 marks.....so I propose that we all would like to receive (FAT CHANCE) 300 marks ,,,,AND AN EXPLANATION ON WHY THE FRACK THIS CONTINUES to happen

THIS would actually be the best thing they could do. Give everyone a nice juicy Multiple Choice Marks package for each character. 1000 is more in line with the amount of downtime we have endured this week ...

Its ironic when professed "it" pros come and say the user base is wrong in wanting a stable, reliable product because of this reason or that...yet offer ZERO "knowledge" to back it up...

I'm not a computer expert. I do not know mmo maintance, infrastructure plans/procedures.

I'm a consumer. And what i see is a broken unsupported product. Think im wrong? Then tell me why. Man up "it" specialists. Shed light on this, instead of being trolls.

Maybe he IS a cryptic employee.

Alright well since this sucker doesn't look like it's gonna be patched up any time soon. I am gonna go do some reading. Yes that thing with books. Just take in a chapter or two and THEN check back. I'll be highly surprised if anything has been posted updating us on what's going on. I'll be even MORE surprised if there has NOT been a post about what's going on.

Fingers crossed that when I return. we at least have an update.

I say we thank Perfect World and Cryptic for not telling us whats wrong. I am trying not to rant but its getting harder and harder not to. I guess they feel not responding is better than just telling us they screwed something up.

So you were a programmer for several thousand clients running a wide variety of systems, with a game comprising over 10 GB of information, with a multi-national corporation breathing down your neck with a timetable?

Wow, I bet Cryptic could learna lot from you.

So let me guess, you are a selfish gamer who does nothing with his life but insult those who actually have a job. Tell us, what do you do for a living? Do you know anything about programming or what it takes to even have a job?

Dont demean other people, especially if you have no proof that you are better than they are.

    Same thing here...

"Retrieving list of characters..." followed by "Connection to Login Server timed out..."

    Anyone know whats happening?

Reading through the forums, we have deduced the following possible reasons why we cannot play:

    1) Hardware Failure
    2) Software Failure
    3) Failed Coding from latest patch
    4) Cryptic's inability to pay anybody with a GED $10 to monitor game servers through the weekend; therefore, they don't know it's happening
    5) Devs are preparing for the upcoming Roller Derby and took a hiatus from work
    6) The Tal Shiar, KDF Intelligence, Section 31, or the Obama Administration have uploaded a virus into the latest patch that is slowly eating our game files.
    7) The Borg assimilated the servers into the collective (actually PWE has already done this; can't be the reason).
    8) Because Scotty is not a quality control engineer at Cryptic

    Anything I missed community?

East and Central Time Zones are off to bed... Mountain and Pacific and zones westward might get some time in in an couple hours. I look at this two ways. One it's payback for all the time Europe's Prime time has been crushed by downtime, and two... At least its Thursday night and not Friday night or Saturday when people have time to play or at least nothing much else to do and would be very bored if the downtime had occurred then. Could always be worse. So in a nutshell, catch up on some 'Z's and dream about STO. Maybe if we're good it will be back up by morning time USA.

I am in the eastern U.S time zone I am not in bed yet. I am watching my wife play Everquest whilst I GET my Drunk on... and think about reloading EQ2 onto my system cause it don't crash!

Well the login error changed from:

Login failure: Connection to the login server timed out.

    to

Login failure: The server is unavailable at this time.

    Cryptic progress?
