With the release of Legacy of Romulus, Cryptic has proven that they have it well within their means to add new playable factions to the game, and, make it work pretty well. Before Legacy of Romulus was even a thought, I always remembered a few people who always wondered why The Romulans were never a playable faction. I even remember some in-game Zone Conversation, several months back, between several people debating the viability of a Romulan faction (most were against it).
Now that three factions is a reality, we have to ask ourselves...could four factions be a reality some day? Could it be possible that, someday, in the next year or two, we might see a fourth faction involving The Breen? How about a fourth faction that involves The Terran Empire? What about Cardassian/True Way/Dominion? Could you imagine a Tholian faction?
The fact is, there are a ton of factions in STO that exist. The art assets are there, and no doubt Cryptic plays with new ideas every day (that is why old problems are never fixed).
So, what do you guys think? Do you like or dislike the idea of a fourth faction? If you dislike it, why? If you like it, which faction would you want to see the most? Remember, this is simply speculation and fan wishing. I am not making this a petition thread to have a fourth faction in the game. I am not trying to start a crusade to get another faction going. I just wanna see where everyone else is on this. I wanna see if other people may of had a similar idea to this. So lets keep it decent and clean.
=====
With all that said, if Cryptic, down the road, unveiled a fourth playable faction, I really hope it would be The Terran Empire. The thought of being able to hit up "Mirror Sector Space" just seems so...delightful.

Cardassians are also quite well positioned for the same treatment as Romulans. Cardassia wasn't outright destroyed but a good chunk of it was leveled, their infrastructure and economy is dependent on foreign aid and they're beset by a terrorist remnant of their former government. Their allegiance system could be dressed up as a loophole in the Treaty of Bajor, Cardassia itself cannot field a proper military, but Cardassian ships under a Starfleet or KDF banner could skirt the letter of the law.
They've got more holes in their ship lineup than Romulans, and much less of the pre existing setup Romulans got, but that could be fixed with an FE and/or some normal season content.
Cardassians as a playable race in the Dominion faction. yes.
or
Cardies as a playable race for KDF/FED. It would be even more believable than the Romulan Republic.
BUT - the resources needed to pull a faction are immense. They worked on Romulans for a YEAR.
I say - let the Romulans earn some money, fix the numerous bugs, let the game settle.
The Suliban are on the program too. (as a playable race, no faction, perhaps a lockbox ship)
Then - PVP, Exploration, Crafting revamp. Some love for the FED's.
Make a POLL - which faction do the players want to see next.
I gotta admit, there is also a part of me that shows some love For Cardassian/Dominion. I think they would be the most viable (though, I still personally stand behind Terran). They just seem like the natural choice.
The one thing with Cardassian/Dominion is the the ships. That is, the people who invested Keys/Lobis to get The Galor, The Bug, and the Dreadnaught. I think those people would be pretty unhappy to know that everyone can now just reach a certain level in a certain faction to get the ships that they may (or may not of) busted the bank for.
I personally knew a guy that wanted a Galor so bad he sunk 20 bucks in keys and about 20 million in EC before he got his Galor. I know a guy who is still trying to get a Galor, and he has been trying since Card boxes were still around.

The Romulans aren't a faction, they are a mini-faction. Since they made Romulans into a mini-faction, then there will not be a 3rd or 4th faction. There will be more mini-factions.
I usually don't post in game forums but this thread got me irritated with all the talk of more factions.
The game is seriously broken after launching Legacy of Romulus. Took them a whole week of endless patching just to keep the server running.
Stop asking for more factions and bug them to fix the bugs. They should start with missions that were added in season 7 that seem to have got broken by this latest release.
Tau Dewa Sector patrol...several of the missions are not able to be completed because the NPC doesn't spawn.
In one of them the 5th wave doesn't spawn so after spending several minutes to beat on 4 waves I find myself flying in circles waiting for the 5th wave only to be disappointed and have to warp out with a patrol not completed.
I personally am not one of the people that is on 24/7 and has time to dance around the sector looking for a mission that will complete.
Don't get me started on the foundry. The whole thing is broken. Can't submit feedback because its broken, can't finish missions because the last part of the mission doesn't start.
I am probably one of many that loves the player made content. Matter of fact until some jackwad decided to make a run for dilithium making cryptic change it to 1 reward per hour, I used to queue a ton of missions and complete them as I had time. This made farming dilithium much easier.
They also need to fix or reduce the amount of resources required to build the starbase. I am not in a big fleet and that being said it has taken weeks to complete a project with the issues I listed above it is making it harder.
I love challenge but maybe they should take a long hard look at what foundry missions should have a cooldown and what missions shouldn't considering some of them take an hour to complete that's a total of 2 hours before the next reward can be acquired.
Sorry i am venting but I found it necessary.
My man, take a chill pill. You should take a moment to re-read the first post of this thread before you take the time to rant like this. THis thread was not about wanting another faction. This thread was intended to see what other people were thinking when a fourth faction is mentioned.
I agree, there needs to be bug fixes first, which seems to be the overwhelming agreement in this thread. Even I said this, by proxy.
But, I take it you dislike the idea, so we will leave it at that.

Until the Romulans become the independent faction that most people desire of them, I am against any proposed 4th faction. Until the Romulans become their true faction (independent of the Federation or Klingon Defense Force) any future faction will also end up as a mini-faction that is forced to join one of the two big players that already exist in the universe.
Ever since joining I had always envisioned this game to eventually be a three way struggle between the Federation, the Klingon Empire and the Remnants of the Romulan Star Empire. I still, (foolishly) remain optimistic regarding this.

Unfortunately, I really doubt this is going to happen. Even if Cryptic expands the Romulan Republic to be more of a full faction, they have already stated their intentions in no uncertain terms that they want only red vs blue pvp, and they have likewise included a storyline that goes through great pains (through retcons, IMO) to show how the Romulans are really all just nice guys who want to get along. A war with the KDF and FED would be in-character for the RSE, but Cryptic has pretty much written them off and buried them with LoR-the current Romulans are an entirely different breed. Militant conflict with its neighbors (even if they were former mortal enemies) seems to be the furthest thing from their minds.
Furthermore, a lot of the Romulan cross-faction content seems like it would be rather tricky to replace. Right now the Doff and Boff system for the Romulans are highly dependent on their allies, not to mention the starbase situation. Likewise there is the issue of crossfaction ships. What would happen to all those doff crews if Cryptic merged the KDF-Roms and Fed-Roms? There would still be issues with trading these items, so half of the faction would not be able to use the doffs and boffs of the other half. So more than likely even with a 'merge' Romulans would have to keep their old faction-allegiance tags that identify which do a doffs, boffs, etc they are allowed to have-meaning they can never really be 100% unified as a faction, they will always be a division between the two halves.
It's a messy, sticky situation because the Romulans rely on their alleis so heavily for content at the moment, content that wouldn't mesh well if they were suddenly merged. (heck, some of it meshes rather nonsensically right now)

The solution then, would be to make the Romulans Universal; being able to use both FED & KDF Doffs, Boffs, Uniforms and Ships. My main dislike about the Romulans is that they are required to join a single side; yet (as a republic) they're getting aid from both sides. They should ultimately be able to use anything they desire.
If Cryptic don't have it in them to remove the alliance-base, then they could do with combining it instead. Sure, the Republic still wont be a true faction (at least, independent) but it would go along way to solving the alliance issue. The problem here however is that by doing so, you're kind of taking away from the FED & KDF (pre-level #50). That being said, it's no different to what they've already done.
Swings and roundabouts. If only Cryptic were better organized and thought this through. My knowledge of launch would indicate that the game was rushed out before they'd firmly decided what they wanted (other than the obvious). Just look at the mess the KDF has been in over the last 2+ years.
There is no reason why we cant have at least one more faction, perhaps more. the only stumbaling block is how LoR does financially. if it does not make the money then they wont bother. if it does, they will. pretty much that simple.
now, if they do one i think they may have to combine some races. the romulans were popular on their own. im not as certain that the dominion, the cardassians, the breen etc are popular enough to make each individually viable so they may have to do some combining.

The problem is, the more factions they make, the more they'll divide the playerbase.
Add to that, if we can expect more factions like the Romulans (dependent on the FED/KDF) what's the point? Come end game, short of a ship and costumes, you're pretty much playing as a Federation or Klingon character. To have endless factions all doing the same, would be lame and pointless.

I doubt they'd ever cover all the individuals. They'd probably cover the main ones though; obviously with the Cardassian (and maybe Dominion) being next; though they can always through the Dominion (specifically the Jem Hadar) in to a Cardassian group.

I thought about that too.
However the issue I'd imagine might exist is the following: Cryptic created the Romulan Republic to give us non Hakeev-sothiopathic Romulans.
With the Cardassian alone, this would work perfectly.
With some kind of Dominion-Cardassian combination like the "True Way" that might not work given the portrayal they have ingame.
While I'd say a combination of two or three groups. like Dominion (represented by Jem'hadar and Vorta), Cardassians (represented by...Cardassians) and Son'a (represented by Son'a, Tarlak and Ellora) would give us a handful of playable races in such a faction I'm not sure Cryptic can pull that off and at the same time spin the whole thing into a positive direction, like they did with the RR.
In hindsight, maybe the Romulan Republic wasn't the best idea for a faction. They could have covered that in other ways. Maybe they should have created a third faction from another quadrant; used their imagination a little bit?

At least then it would have been independent.
But that would have been even less akin to what people wanted...
What about if it was your Dominion Faction (complete with the Wadi and Dosi). Cardassians, Son'a (and maybe even Breen) could have been story unlocks.
Then people would have pointed out there's not enough Romulans on the list.
And then they'd have pointed to the poll that said Romulans are the most requested people and asked "Why people with red face markings instead of Romulans?!"

I guess we can't go pleasing everyone. Still, I really wish Cryptic would have done the Romulans justice.
LoR should to be about rebuilding Romulan Star Empire, liberating Donatra from borg collective ,confronting Sela & madness of Tal Shiar, claiming Vulcan as new romulan homeworld...
Like others have said: Bug fixes and all first; then I'd say revamp the Fed tutorial to bring it more in line with the Klingons and Roms. Develop the Roms more as a faction. More sectors and deeper content while gradually setting the stage for a fourth faction--possibly Cardassian or Dominion. Take the time to do it right.
I know it would never happen, but for us lifetimers I'd like a mini liberated Borg faction, so you play through the tutorial as a Borg drone and you get rescued by Kdf, fed or rom but still
Have your own lib Borg vessels and a new engine type, transwarp cores and there would be assimilated versions of all the races available to each faction respectively with assimilated romulans and remand being able to choose fed or kdf as their saviour.

LSD can overcome assimilation? Now I know what Janeway used in "Unimatrix Zero"...also explains her erratic behaviour on the show.
I don't think a fourth faction diluting the player base even further is a good idea. Instead cryptic should focus on improving what they have now. i.e. bringing episodes up to par, more playable PvE content, perhaps improving PvP.
The game doesn't need more playable (half) factions, that's just a bit of a band aid. The game needs more overall content and it's existing content improved.

Lol I typed That on my iPhone and it auto corrected, though LSD would be funny "we are the Borg resistance is.........argggggghhhh dragons, please don't attack me mr teapot"
It wouldn't really be pay to win since we already have access to liberated Borg in each faction, the only differance would be a differant hub world like romulans get.

"Enemy" Faction and Splinter Faction...endless factions.
That's not counting the possibility of other factions that don't necessarily have to follow the Romulan-Style.
Ferengi (why are Ferengi a Fed playable species but they're on Qo'noS as well, eh?)
Deferi? Hirogen?
Heck, how about Mirror Factions, eh?
Yep, it's a veritable can of worms...maybe a Worm Faction?

Surley you mean people who pay for access to the faction, if it was restricted to Lifetimers that would be mega pay2win

Like I said though, it wouldn't ever happen
