I need to get out of my vo'quv carrier, it's a flying garbage can as far as maneuverability is concerned. So I been looking for other ships, some of the lock box ships interest me, but what really caught my eye was the Galor class.
But this is to anyone that got the premier rare ship from a lock box. How many keys did you go through? I been thinking about dropping 20 on keys for my card boxes

This is like asking "How many tickets did you buy before you won the lottery?" There is no set number you have to open - it's random, damnit.
To give you some sort of idea, when the Tal Shiar box came out I once opened a stack of twenty and got two Adapted Destroyers. But i've opened many a Cardassian or Tholian lockbox - and indeed, many a Tal Shiar box - and got nothing more than the TRIBBLE-awful consolation prizes. True, I have had my share of Lockbox ships - a D'Kora, two Temporal ships and three Destroyers, but that's what, five out of jesus-knows how many boxes.
As for how many boxes i've opened - Even I lost count.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.
I never opened a ship from a box. However, I think my experience is valuable for your question.
I opened for 800lobis worth of boxes. Which is around 200 of them. No ships.
The drop rate is between 0.5-1% according to some player made studies. And the other reward is useless most of the time, and not worth a key.
This is the way to get your ship, guaranteed, without gambling on the Lockbox's TRIBBLE drop rate. If you say Galor's are 100 million or so on the exchange and keys sell for 1.5 million, then you need to sell roughly 66.666666666666667 keys, adjusting for price obviously.

thats what I been told as of recent, by quite a few people actually. Get keys, sell keys.
Just... dang, 98-100 mil (depending on time of day at exchange) seems so dang far. It takes me a good long while to even get a million EC by itself.

Well, my calculation assumes that you're using Zen - from Dilithium conversion or from cash sale - to buy said keys. The whole thing falls down if you're using EC to buy them off the exchange.
In which case, you may well be buggered, in that respect.
If you are using Zen, then hey, it's a fairly long Dilithium grind or a fairly short parting with maybe ?70 or so. That said you can always then get 66 Cardassian lockboxes, grab your rabbit's foot and gamble like it's Vegas. Of course, then you run the risk of getting sod all.
So it all comes down to how much you really want this ship and how quickly you want it. And, I suppose, how willing you are to grind Dil or part with your money. Because for 70ish quid you could get two whole games, to put it into perspective.

Here's a tip.
Buy enough keys > Sell for 1,4+- each till you have 70 mil (so give or take 60 keys) =
I learned a long time ago to forgo the lottery. I just sell 10 keys on the exchange at a time for 15 mil a set.
How the Devs see Star Trek, apparently:
Star Trek: The Original Grind
Star Trek: The Next Grind
Star Trek: Deep Space Grind
Star Trek: Voyage to the Grind
Every new lock box, someone does the mass openings to find out the drop rate and it always comes out as .5%, or 1 out of every 200 on average. Yeah, it is definitely better to just sell keys for what you want.
Agreed on all points above. BUT, to answer the OP:
Maybe around 5-10 keys for the Mirror Recon Sci vessel and about 40 for the Galor (which really was a better investment than trying to buy it off the Exchange).
My luck is abyssmal in online games. I'm the guy thats had to save money to buy anything nice in MMO's.
8 years of guild wars: No crazy rare drop. 1 drop that was worth 100k (not much really, heck I can still remember exactly what it was). Even when they introduced all the dungeons in eotn, I never had that one really expensive green-item drop, or even one of the game figures drop. Several hundred z-keys used, never got an everlasting tonic or anything special.
Few years of Ragnarok online: No rare drop, not a single one, no ghostring card, no nothin!
Runes of Magic: Couple hundred dungeon runs, no rare drop gone to me (but seen them go to other people).
I am the epitome of someone who grinds for a living in games. It's high time I change that, I must no longer be a person that observes luck for others, but one that gets to experience luck for once.
Funny thing is, if everyone just did the Keys to EC to buy the ship, then there would be no ships on the exchange to begin with cause no one would be opening boxes lol.

OP, the drop rate on the big prize ships was calculated to be 0.5%. Some will get it in a hadfull of boxes while other don't get it in hundreds. If you want one get lockbox keys to sell in the exchange and then use the EC to get the ship.

Well, good luck in your quest. I'll just say I opened around twenty boxes today and got sod all.
Jus' sayin'.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.

So someones gotta open up boxes too lol
There'd still be ships from the people who open boxes for Lobis.
I've opened well over 2000 to 3000 boxes easy and have gotten alot of ships out of them....but its ALL random...each and every time you use a key...you may or may not get anything good from the box.
My suggestion to the OP is....if you can't afford in the in game currency or real life currency....stay far far away from them and buy your ships of the Exchange. And saving the millions of EC's for a ship isn't near as hard as one might think either.
"If everyone used Macs, we'd be working on how to get to Alpha Centauri rather than how to get to Mars."
Aside from the free one from Unlocking The Box, yes, they only come in boxes.
In addition, Lobi ships are around the 70 million mark. That's maybe 50 or so keys for 1.5 million EC each, give or take.
Contrast that to the 200 Keys (minimum, assuming you only ever get the minimum of 4 lobi per box) to get the 800 lobi needed for a Lobi ship.
Yes but you'd be crazy to grind lobi by opening boxes and then buy a ship. If you want a lobi ship, you sell master keys and buy one which works out far cheaper.
You open boxes for lobi so you can buy the Tachyokinetic converter which is bind on pickup, or any other BoP item in the store. I had to open 40 boxes to get the Tachyokinetic on my new rommie (bought keys off the exchange on my main) but alas no ship.
usually abaut 120 roughly the new box I actually hit paydirt about 500 lobi range
it did not take long this time
I am 41 away from second reculse carrier
jem dreadnaught took me 180 to get they seem to be getting better

consoles are bind in the lobi store but not the ones in the box you can trade ships between toons

I've opened more then I care to remember and the only lockbox ships I have gotten came from the exchange.

Yeah, but it is luck at the end of the day. To put it into perspective, that last Tal Shiar Destroyer I had, I opened maybe five of a stack of ten when it dropped. Since I already had one, I traded it for 70 keys, which I then used to open another 70 boxes and got nothing of any real value.
That's obviously not including the 1000+ lobi and six mirror Ha'apaxes i'd accumulated along the way, not to mention enough duty officer packs to ensure my EC income for a long time. Depends how you look at it. I wasn't dissapointed that i'd not got another Destroyer. Hell, i'd made a decent haul from the two spares I had - 1k+ lobi and a shiny new Galor.
But it ultimately depends what you want and how badly - and definitively - you want it.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.
I have gotten 6 lockbox ships, 4 used, one sold, and one still in the box. The key is buying them with EC. How?
1. Sell keys. Eats up dilithium but pads your bank quite nicely.
2. DOFFS. One of my KDF characters got 3 purple Tec doffs in a month(pure luck), and sold them for prices ranging from 8.6 million to 13.2 million.
Bonus: If you have a T5 shipyard, grind fleet marks to buy purple tactical doffs from your fleet, they tend to sell for a few million each
FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY!!!! The big winner:
3. Romulan BOFFS. I rolled an extra romulan just to gain more BOFFs, and right now a Rom with the "Superior Operative" trait goes for 8-15 million EC. My Romulan character, less than a month old, has 63 million EC, mostly from selling 5 DOFFs. As Rom BOFFs become more common the price will fall to the dirt cheap price all other boffs are now.
Wells: 15
D'kora: (Given to a fleetmate, but I still pulled it) 6
D'kora #2: 10
My JHAS was acquired on my second Gamma Quadrant pack, my TUffli, also given away to a fleetmate, was pulled from my first pack.
I had a Galor that I got in a trade for my second D'kora.
I had no desire to get the tholian items so I skipped that box almost entirely, I think I opened 5 boxes.
Haven't opened any of the Tal SHiar boxes yet and after 20 Dominion boxes I've had no luck getting the HEC, which sucks because I actually want that one... mostly for the console and ship material.
I bought the Galor, the JDC and the JHEC off the Exchange and my JHAS was in the 8th Gamma Quadrant DOFF Pack during the last rerun.. Will probably buy a D'Kora (and another Galor) sooner or later, too, but am not interested in the other Box ships anyway.

I bought the Recluse off the exchange at 65 million when I managed to get an orb weaver out of my 30th Tholian Box.
I then bought another Orb Weaver later on off the exchange for 40mil.
In short, save up EC, unless you're lucky.
