When I first bought this game I bought a lifetime sub because I like Star Trek. I've only played it a couple times though because it's difficult. There are low level missions I just can't get through, and I can't find help in game. This will be the 2nd time I've quit without getting very far. I hope this post will help other new players to avoid investing in this game until you are sure you have the skill to play it, because I surely do not.
Difficulty is a subjective matter, most people in this game in fact find the AI (Intelligence) and overal difficulty too easy.
Yet many people like that fact, also seeing that 99% of the players dont even care for PvP, its pretty obvious why. They are spoiled with easy mode. They try one time PvP and get battered godly, what gives?
Oh yes it was my first MMO (STO) and it was hard, it just takes knowledge and how things work in order to make PvE too easy.

the ai difficulty isnt the problem its the special skills they have and the lack of balance with these special powers, like for example the borg tac cube throwing out a insta death torp. armek one shotting chain kills, grethors minibosses throwing their aoe red plasma fires or breen crm 200 cone fire... all of them are so overpowered its not true.
when these bosses get a rebalance on their skills, it will become playable again. a new player learning the game wont have the knowledge or experience to deal with this, so they may end up dying so many times its not worth the effort, trust me i know how this feels.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
difficulty is rather subjective in this game and here is why:
if you are a beginner and even more so new to RPGs or gaming in general this game is complicated and difficult, no doubt. However once you read through some guides, follow some basic advices for shipsetup and skills this game becomes one of the easiest games there is.
No MMO, other than hello kitty and lego universe, has easier "endgame" content or leveling content.
only mission i would remotely consider hard in this game is to win the "no win" scenario.
elite stfs are hard, but eventually become easy if you know the routine.
also the choice of ship is very influencial on difficulty. The game is centred around dealing dmg as fast as possible. Only escorts and/or ships with many tac boff seatings and tac consoles can deliver that...the other ship classes are less suited for the leveling content and i dare to say, also at endgame.
it takes on average a newcomer about 2-3 month to be average and get behind all the game mechanics. More advanced MMO players probably reach above average skill after 1 month.

Yes, you do.
If it is difficult, then it is a challenge to overcome.

1. Which mission is causing you problems?
We can't help you, unless you tell us where you are running into problems. I'm assuming this is a FED alt.
I know how you feel. A few days ago to mitigate the delete mail bug, I created a Neverwinter character. My goal was simple, to delete my mail. I could see the mail button, but you can't move your mouse to select it.
I tried changing the options etc and was getting frustrated that I could see the button I wanted to press but the interface would not allow me to do that. Eventually I was able to activate another interface that gave me a shortcut to my email. But after all that work, there was no mail there.
So I removed Neverwinter from my system and installed Champions. From Champions I was able to easily create a alt and delete my Star Trek Online mail.
Ex-CoH players, Please add the chat channel "CoX STO"
i have to disagree the game is quite easy i first joined over a year ago now my first game like this others had been online text based/consoles games rts games like c & c.
I first started out on the tutorial reading all the hints and tips it provided having no help at all using no wiki for help no skill planners no reading forums either i joined when 2800 just came out i was flying my shuttle under ds9 at level 7 and remember seeing level 50 players asking for help in zone all week i was truly confused as to why they needed help at all i did it at level 7 with the basic gear that came with the shuttle no tact engineering science consoles nothing at all i simply had not gotten to them the few i had stayed on my miranda. I found every mission quite easy and doable for most the time i flew escorts with phaser beam arrays from the vendor on esd with photon torpedos :P i am not sure if the tutorial was around at the start of sto but it is very helpful you could try creating a new federation character and playing it maybe it will help you out with the info it gives you
I've got one mission that keeps kicking my butt. No worries, It's just a game. I leave it alone, play some other missions, gain new character skills, learn some new things about the gamplay, and make sure to have fun. Then I go back to the mission that's giving me trouble and get beat up again. I'll get it eventually, no matter how many times I level up before I do. STO is a pretty decent game with plenty to do, no matter what your taste is. It's no fun respawning five times in five minutes and not getting anywhere, so look around and find some missions that are fun. Try the troublesome ones some other time.
Some of the lowby missions put you against enemies that are pretty tough until you learn how to work them. I still remember spending hours trying to get past the Romulan D'deridex missions, where it was spewing triple torps in close proximity and wiping me out. Doomsday machine is tricky few new players too, some of the others. These are all really simple for vets to take out. I run through them now that I know how to setup my ship for maximum damage, and now what angles I need to take.
Well, i hope the game is not so hard...i am downloading it right now and i hope it is not so complex like EVE Online
It is complex (multiple types of advancement, separate starship, shuttle, and away team levels of play, with different weapon types radically altering gameplay) but as others have said, it's not difficult. The PVE game simply doesn't require you to make full or optimal use of all the many options you have available to you. At a particular point in the tutorials, it's suggested you set your power distribution to favor weapons (there's a simple button for this in the space HUD). Unless you play a science vessel, remember to always do that and you've basically overcome the learning curve until you meet one of a few particularly nasty enemies (Romulans if your Fed, Fek'ihri if you're KDF, Elachi if you're Romulan, a few shared enemies later than that).
Honestly, if you take your time and ask questions along the way, you shouldn't have any problems. If this is too hard, you might consider Tetris.

If you havent played any MMOs before this then I can understand finding it rather complicated.
However if you have, STO is by far the easiest MMO out there.
I suggest trying to find a fleet who will help answer your questions. There are no missions you should not be able to complete solo though.
STO is in no way shape or form the easiest MMO. It has two different combat systems (ground and space), limited 3D movement in space, inertia, and a very complex skill and power system. That's before you get into doffing, etc.
Of the MMO's I've played, Ultima Online, Everquest 1, Conan, WoW, Mankind, City of Heroes, Champions, Star Wars (both), Rune Scape, etc, STO has by far the most complicated mechanics.
Hell in SWTOR you can't even fly your own spaceship, it's just an old arcade-style interface/minigame.
I think a lot of people have forgotten how steep the learning curve is here having played for so long.
STO is one of the easiest MMO's out there for one reason.
The game is not tuned for min/maxers.
You can complete every PvE mission except No Win Scenario in a poorly built ship with poorly spent skill points.
Now, the old saying a minute to learn and a lifetime to master is applicable. There are so many options that you can loose yourself in them fairly quickly. The upside is that there ends up being a near infinite number of paths that all lead to the same destination: Dead mobs.
Just jump in and start blasting things. Gravity will pull you inevitably to the level cap.
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!
advises from a new captain in STO (me:P)
start searching the forum for guides and advises how to build your ship and character and you'll be vice admiral before you know it (academy and shipyard)
if some missions are too complicated or hard to pass them search the wiki for advise and walkthroughs (BUT dont do it all the time cause you ll miss all the fun and excitement from finish them by yourself )
and dont worry if you have many questions after reading (google is your friend), post them in the academy section and someone will help you. Guys here are very helpful if you ask nice
I would suggest making a Klingon or Romulan. Their new level progression really walks you through everything as you play the missions, with nice info pop ups or text in the mission itself. I've been playing for a while so that aspect wasn't as important to me, but it really did seem like it would be useful for new players. Assuming you read everything on screen you should be fine.
I still remember spending hours trying to get past the Romulan D'deridex missions, where it was spewing triple torps in close proximity and wiping me out.
Hmm... someone is killing me easily from close distance... hmm I fight with him from long distance... no it's too difficult to consider it.
I'm not sure I'd call the game 'hard' as much as I'd say it has some REALLY cheap shots in it.
For me, I know how I LIKE to play, which is a less min max'd style that affords me more options. I play this way in CO, and I play this way in STO. In CO it's becoming an issue now that their content team is doing everything they can to shoehorn Trinity game play into the game-frustrating, but what can you do? STO has some of that going on as well.
But since the enemies don't have significant health pools in 90% of all situations, AND the lightest, most heavily armed ships get wonderful defensive bonuses, the answer (for most players) is more damage and more speed to dodge more crazy incoming damage. Honestly? It works... although it's basically a 'fu' strategy, to quote Extra Credits. That's a different problem, and something I've complained about in the forums now and again.
In the interim, maybe you should think about what you like about Star Trek, and ask if it's missing from this game. That could be something they'd actually look at.
When I first bought this game I bought a lifetime sub because I like Star Trek. I've only played it a couple times though because it's difficult. If it hasn't been suggested already, team up with a friend. My brother and I played through all the fed missions that way; sometimes it's easier to get past areas when you have two people instead of one. If you're stuck, try asking for help in a public area like earth space dock; there will usually be people willing to help. Also, I believe there are starter fleets that offer help to beginning players.

Neverwinters UI is simple it is STO shooter mode on steroids if you pay attention to the tutorial you would know how to use it.
On the part where this game is hard, yes I agree if your not use too MMO's then it can be fairly challenging but once you get use to how things work it get easier to do things depending on what you were getting stuck on and what class you were playing I would suggest try another class or even another faction, now with the KDF and Romulan factions at Lvl 1 those tutorials are much better than the Feds and may make it easier to understand the whole way of doing things and don't hesitate to ask for help in chat or even look for someone that is willing to help a new player in my comments when you look up my player I have it say "willing to help as long as you ask and not just send a blind invite" really that's all it takes is asking someone if they will help ofcourse it also helps to know what exactly your getting stuck on but that can be determine at a later time don't give up on the game it is alot easier than it looks it just takes time to get the feel for it.

Hello, I really understand your frustration.
First, let me invite you to add me on friends in game so maybe we can chat and help each other. smile.
I have Invited a friend, for seven years we played together at different MMO. She left the first day. Could not even manage to move the ship in the first mission. She left on May 20, so she has avoided all suffer for New Romulan Patch problems in which we are all now.
I play three weeks. I been 2 days to move from first mission. This last week I've fallen into a Loop of reading guides out of the game to see what I do in the next step.
You have to read a couple of guides to see what to put in the ship.TYou have to read a couple of guides to see which skills points where I put in my character. You have to read a couple of guides to see which skills bridge officers are best for your ship and carrer....
If there were a real help in the game, I would play full screen and the computer dont be heated. There is not support in the game. is minimal.
I know there is great webs, but really i want to play and have fun. And yes you all are so smarts.
I know it is against The Terms of Service now. If there were addo-ons/mods of third parties, the community could help this wonderful game to make things simple, the right decisions in the fields and sections wide of this game, also would be free to cryptic. Is a matter of security.
So i have decided to be Sci, and i go to heal when i play on team / fleet With a mod i can see this and how to set all stuff on and dont have to bother about math and stats.
cheers.

Aww, now don't give up that fast!
I agree with you there are a few Missions early in the game that can present you with quite a challenge, especially if you don't know the first thing about the game and the Enemies you're facing yet.
The 3rd Mission "Hide and Seek" comes to mind here... Those Aceton Assimilators can give you a pretty hard time until you realize you need Torps to knock them out, beams will only anger them.
Success in the Missions and other PvE Content doesn't depend on Skill as much as on having some knowledge about your Enemies, their preferred tactics and how to counter them.
If you're willing to learn, I'll gladly shoot you a fleet invite and we'll teach you what you need to know to soar through those Missions.
After all, you spent at least 200 buck on this already, would be a shame to quit like this.
Send me an ingame mail to @cgjannek and I'll get back to you.
This is my second MMO after Sw:tor. I found that pretty easy to level, this one even more so. I came here looking for space combat and find it amazing. Four days after starting I got to captain and now getting my head around bridge officer and crew training. It is making my head hurt admittedly, but loving it never the less. Would be nice if the servers were up, luckily got past my first challenging fight with my Galaxy class against that annoying warbird, just before the server died.
see, while I can understand OP's (and many other people's) issues with STO, I don't think it's because the game is particularly difficult. Actually *PLAYING* STO is abominably easy, in some ways, but it's nice that's its relatively simple and straightforward.
What I found baffling about STO, and still do to varying degrees, is the absolutely ABSYMAL in-game instructions. I can't imagine how many hours of game I've wasted, fighting my way through menu after menu, trying to find some way of getting instructional, procedural, or technical information on this, that or the other thing.
Just trying, for example, to figure out how to work voice in this game took nearly an hour of my friend and I pushing various buttons on the chat tab, finding new sub-menus, discovering that turning *on* voip was under one sub-menu, but adjusting voip settings was under another...
and then Fleets and Starbases - geez - we musta spent at least a week navigating menus, reading and re-reading descriptions trying to understand how one thing interacted with another - popping onto the forums only to discover that almost everyone was as confused as we were (the only people who knew anything for sure were the ones that had fought their way thru all the crazy earlier on Tribble)
This game has the WORST in-game instructions for virtually every facet of the game that I have ever experienced. I find many of their menus barely navigable, and often only accidentally intuitive, and THAT'S WHEN THEY WORK!!!
/sigh
but, once you figure out HOW the game gets played, actually *playing* it is fairly simple -
so, if the OP is still listening, there *is* a light at the end of the tunnel, and, at least from my own perspective, the true difficulty is in finding the most accessible instructions for playing the game, usually from outside sources - in game, consider asking for help for any particular aspect of the game (say, boffs tonight, maybe using the exchange tomorrow) - you'll get about 20 unhelpful jerks, and possibly a few gorn jokes, but at least one person with a little time and sympathy can walk you thru any particular aspect of the game in 10 minutes or less, and is far more likely to make sense than the in-game instructions
and that goes really for anyone finding the menus and in-game instructions half as confusing as I did...
There is no correct resolution; it's a test of character.

After all, you spent at least 200 buck on this already, would be a shame to quit like this.
Send me an ingame mail to @cgjannek and I'll get back to you.
