    The site is going down for maintenance and normal play will not be affected....? And they quickly scramble to hide that blunder. Do not tell me the site and game are on the same server or something stupid like that >_<

    They could have had a denial of service attack since the website was having intermittent problems as well. Which knocked the servers offline, though they'll probably never say what it was exactly that caused it.
