I know we have our favorite sci-fi TV shows and movies, but what about the intro songs?

Something that when you hear it, just gets you excited, or just gives you that special feeling inside.

I have a really cool song that's my #1 the intro theme to SPACE: 1999 That's one of the coolest intro tunes that so different, it always got me excited to watch that show.

Woot!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4-A__lZrEA

The 2nd one that always beat out Space: 1999 in my book is:

Faith of the heart. Love that tune, but it it's not SPACE:1999 :D

Eh. I never really liked it. It's not a bad song, but if feels really silly. Star Trek always had an orchestral piece as the theme. Even the movies had their own individual orchestral themes. A country-pop song in that line up feels really out of place.

It's an okay song, and decent choice for a scifi series, but for Star Trek? It's one of the last things I would have picked.

Here are two of my favorite themes, I'll post the rest later.

    The Final Frontier.

I know it's just a version by Jerry Goldsmith of the original song created by Alexander Courage, and it came from what is widely considered to be the worst Star Trek movie of all time, but this song really is it's only saving grace. It's Trek in a way few songs are, and it's one of the few songs I could never truly get tired of hearing. Everything about it is epic, even the slower parts. In short, bad movie, but song needs more love.

    V

V is an interesting little series, and so is it's theme song. It's theme song is far slower and more atmospheric than most themes. There's something about it I can't quite put my finger on, it almost has a Vangelis feel to it (More on him later). A very unappreciated theme from a very unappreciated series.

    The theme to Firefly.
My Romulan Liberated Borg character made it to Level 30 and beat the (old) Defense of New Romulus with the skill point bug. :D

IMHO... to be a great theme song it has to fit the material like a glove, set the pace for the show. I know a lot of great themes but they don't convey the show. But there are several good ones, and it's hard to pick just one.

      Firefly hits the bullseye.

The Six Million Dollar Man, Airwolf, and Danny Elfman's theme to The Flash hit the target because they all convey the sense of speed. Elfman's work, I can almost picture the wheels on a steam locomotive at full throttle. Airwolf, I can almost feel the copter in operation.

The X-Files theme and that of The Twilight Zone also hit the mark for setting the creepy tone for the show.

(I'll let someone else mention Dr. Who) :D

Interesting thing, I'd always thought the closing credits song would have been much better. Turns out it was supposedly composed to be the opening, but some dumb exec wanted something different.

You can See Here how well it worked with the opening credits.

      Quoted for truth.

However, as much as I love Firefly, I am going to submit the Space: Above and Beyond opening.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBaQFafK3ZU

Not just one of the best opening themes (IMO), but a fantastic show that was killed well before it's prime.

Hmm...two of my favorite sci-fi shows were killed off because of morons who only wanted viewer numbers, not good television...

I can't believe this! No one picks ST:TNG? I know, it's a shortened version of the theme from the movies, but it gets me ready every time I hear it! Just listen and try not to get in a Trek mood:

      Close runner up:

Both get me excited and give me that special feeling inside. Want to watch both shows right now!

I have to say, if you're going for most awesome TV theme tune of all time, I think I'd have to cast my vote for 'Thunderbirds'. ^_^

When rewatching TNG I always let the opening credits play through; no matter how many times I see/hear it never gets old.

May I also add, from various sci-films:

"That New Car Smell" from Star Trek (2009) - I play this every time I launch a new ship.

      The theme from The Terminator

"Also Sprach Zarathustra" from 2001: A Space Odyssey

"Journey to the Island" from Jurassic Park

Pretty much the entire soundtrack to Tron: Legacy but especially the track "Flynn Lives"

      Oh, and freaking duh...

Nah, for epic intro's it really doesn't get much more epic than this.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHD1uPVkyk0

But really when it came to good intro songs, the 80s Sci-Fi cartoons rocked it. They put as much work into some intros as they did the cartoons.

I'm not sure it's the best theme song out there, but for me, the theme song that most perfectly captures the essence of its show is Firefly. When you hear that song, you know exactly what kind of show you're about to watch.

      Here are my favorites...

      Reimagined Battlestar Galactica--Season 1 US intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VPep3zECm0

Man, that puts CHILLS down my spine. Beats the other theme they later used for the show absolutely senseless.

Both of these versions of the DS9 theme are awesome in their own ways...

      Seasons 1-3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFKTNQYHkcY
      Seasons 4-7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc_0ii3SLp0

And a third version never used on the show I bet most of you have never heard, that is ALSO really awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayARo_IGV7g Totally would use this for a DS9 movie if it were ever made.

And this one isn't a theme, but it's probably one of THE best soundtrack pieces ever to grace a Trek production: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbbNn0yPJs0 Fits absolutely hand-in-hand with the most powerful cliffhanger ever. That final crescendo...WHOA.

And got to agree with whoever picked the X-Men cartoon theme. AWESOME.

Of Sci-fi I think DS9 is probably my favourite. I just love the tone, the view of the station etc.

but my all time favourite, while not being sci-fi, is Game of Thrones. That is just epic.

Otherwise, I can't argue with any of the selections posted.

Ok, if animated sci-fi is involved...

Long before Firefly blended western and space themes, there was
The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers.

      No guts, no glory.

I wish someone would do an update/remake of this series. :(
