I, ,myself use the mouse R/L button to maneuver and programmed my mouse buttons 1-6. But sometimes I find it frustrating. I need to program my G110 keyboard too, that might help.
I have a corsair K90 but instead of the macro keys I set the num pad to all my required traits and systems. It means I can just press the function I need, its much slower using the mouse in my opinion and I have the use of 15 keys.
Its much easier to use, I also set the camera fixed to allow me to have a good idea of where I'm going.

How do you control your ship? Mouse? WASD?
I'm still a new player and I would like to learn
I use my mouse for camera control and run everything else off the keyboard. Occasionally, if I'm hitting a lot of powers, I use the mouse to click weapon tiles to keep my firing going while I'm chaining powers, but that's about it.

My guess is "hope" keeps people not playing but posting on the forums. For others, its a path of sad realization and closure. Grieving takes time. The worst "haters" here love the game, or did at some point.
Movement and speed with the keybord, topedoes on autofire and energy weapons with the space bar. half of the abilities with keyboard, the other half clicked.

By offering decent wages for the enlisted, a good pension plan for the officers, and free health care for all.
Oh that's not what you mean. I use the mouse for looking around and the keyboard for control. Including clicking powers. Slow I know but I bought a shiny new gaming mouse and am trying to learn things like macros.
In the mean time anyone want to join my crew? Retirement includes a plot of land, serfs to work it, a minor title and a strapping young lad/lass of your choosing.
Cheers from Antonio Valerio Cortez III, Half-Celestial Archduke of the Free Marches Confederacy.
That's pretty cool. Simulates being a Trek captain barking out commands to your bridge officers pretty well. However, as I PvP a lot, I'd be concerned about the added delay which could get me killed.
Back in 2000 I had my shoulder rebuilt. I ended up having a corrective surgery to repair the damage caused by that just after 9/11 (which prevented me from going back into the Army sadly). I had started playing Everquest earlier in the year, and realized I would have a lot of down time on my hand, and yet no tangible way to continue to play EQ. So I bought a Belkin Nostromo n50 game pad. Worked awesome! When that one was about worn out, I upgraded to the n52. When that was worn out, I bought a second. When that was worn out, I wasn't happy with the most recent version of the n52, so I went with a Logitech G13.
It has a joystick for the left thumb, four rows of keys, with several toggles for additional keysets per profile, and it's pretty comfortable. Setting it up for STO and CO was a piece of cake. Neverwinter is proving to be a little bit of a challenge, as the UI and controls are very much different. Still, it can be done, and I love my G13.
They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.
WASD for direction, mouse for camera
Middle Mouse Button/E and Q combo for Speed Control
All powers clicked on, sometimes using number bar
Mouse click and tab combo for targeting
Spacebar for energy weapons and mouse click for torpedoes
I use my mouse for camera control and run everything else off the keyboard. Occasionally, if I'm hitting a lot of powers, I use the mouse to click weapon tiles to keep my firing going while I'm chaining powers, but that's about it.
I use KB/M because I may as well put my Naga Razer to use and get the absolute most out of quick and easy access to Shift/Alt/Ctrl+(whatever number) for use of my abilities.
i use up down left right on keyboard to steer everything else is done by the mouse. sometimes i use numpad for things like target select or distrubte sheilds
i dont know how people play using wasd id always bet hitting the wrong keys
Space control indeed. I use WASD to maneuver the ship and a Logitech G510 to manage most of the bridge officer skills, I have 3 macros to cover all but a few I use for specific situations, I.e., when the deflector dish is facing the enemy.
Turning a cruiser or carrier requires you to just hold down the direction keys for most of the fight. How do you find targets in STO space? You spin the camera around. No overview, minimap is useless here. Auto follow, useable in combat, with a keybound toggle would be really nice.
I don't. I know control is an illusion, so i don't even try!
OK, jokes aside, WASD for steering. Q and E for throttle, mouse for camera and ability/skill clicking. Space as well for fire, but click on the all weapons icon for torpedoes.
WASD to turn in space, mostly tab targeting occasionally clicking the target if one is needed to be burst down.
All abilities including swapping power between subsystems, firing off abilities, etc are bound to keys on the keyboard, or the mouse so I can quickly click any of them at a time without the need to click.
In PvE the only time I really need to ever click is to go through dialog boxes, or open a menu. In PvP never need to really click anything unless I'm joining the queue and/or setting up a match.
Worked fine for three years thus far.

Know I am going to get laughed out of the thread for this........but...
I an old logitech attack 3 joystick(covers ears to protect from deafening levels of laughter), for manuvering with buttons coded to beams, torps, full impulse, and targeting enemies/friends, and mouse for power selection/camera.
I mostly use the mouse for camera and hold mouse buttons to turn my ship. Had to get a gaming mouse just for the durability; I don't use any of the extra buttons in STO. Sometimes I use WASD to turn if I need to point my camera elsewhere.
Q/E/R for throttle. Tab, backed up by click, for targeting. Click to target teammates.
Keyboard for powers:
Tray 1: Number row 1-10
Tray 2: ` and F1 through F9
Tray 3: Ctrl + Number row 1-10
Tray 4: Shift + Number row 1-10
` is always Balance shields. F5 is always Evasive Maneuvers. Ctrl + 1 for Cloak. Shift + 1 for Red Matter Capacitor. Shift + 8, 9, and 0 are used in Sector Space for DI, Freighter, and Slipstream.
More generally, heals and defense buffs on the right side, with offensive buffs, debuffs, and weapons middle to left. Subsystem targeting is on Ctrl + 1 through Ctrl + 4 for my Science ships. The occasional "Oh TRIBBLE" power in Shift + 2 or 3.
Spacebar for energy weapons. Turrets on autofire. Projectiles, when present, are generally bound to 2 and 4 for front and rear, respectively.

12 button analog gamepad, actually an old playstation 2 controller connected to usb adapter. enough to accomodate ship steering using left analog, view control on right analog, shield reroute on digital movement, all 4 function engine control (throttle up, throttle down, toggle throttle, full impulse) on the triangle, square, cirecle & cross buttons, firing energy weapons on L1, firing kinetic weapons on R1, select target on L2 & R2, interact on pressing left analog, and some view functions on all other buttons. i still need to press something on keyboard to invoke skills.
the beauty is, when using it on ground combat, especially on melee, this controller allows me to move smooth & fluently with combo attack like in fighting game
Basically an ergonomic half keyboard with some other stuff. I use the scroll wheel to control throttle which gives me the upper hand. The dpad is set to shield distribution and the button above it for fire all.
Directional keys for movement, additional keys for speed. Everything else is clicked.
Same here pretty much, partly because my memory is horrible at times and I'm worried I would press wrong hot keys, party because I only own a cheap and generic keyboard and mouse currently. So I have no special buttons or areas to make special hot keys.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
