Unable to customise starship, immediate Zen cost

Im baffled by this so I'm hoping someone else has had\fixed the same problem.

When I go to the starship customiser guy and bring my ship up, I am immediately presented with a cost of 709 Zen to continue, even before I make any changes.
I got to Lieutenant Commander and received a new ship and I get the same thing. My first starting cruiser and my new escort both require large amounts of Zen to make any alterations.

I'd appreciate any help, the USS Cyclone needs a new paint job!

Cheers

Si

From what I can tell it seems that when you bring up the customization screen it is for some reason adding something to the design that costs Zen - in the case of my Klingon Bird of Prey it was changing the design to the revamped/upgraded design as soon as the screen loaded.

Since there are no longer any indicators as to what changes will cost Zen it can be hard to work this out.

The work around I've found, at least for Klingon ships, is to pick one of the generic class designs that don't cost any money and work from there. If you are still seeing a Zen cost try altering the colour scheme or the bridge layout. I know that for Romulan ships the Reman colour schemes cost Zen, which can catch people out.

Thanks for the advice. I shall go and have a further play, but I think its a known issue.
Typically, i couldn't see any threads about it until I made my own, now I see a few.

    I feel like a chump! :p

I had this happen try changing the material type. for some reason all ships that have a refit or a retrofit also have a custom material type. ex would be the cruiser when i tried
to make it custom the default material type was of the exeter class.
