I like the new hud, my only quibble is that whichever one I use is the same one for all characters. I was initially under the impression that I could have different colored huds for different characters. Thus far, that isn't the case.

You mean like the one that's called "Federation - Classic (no red alert)"

    Use your eyes next time.

Also, play with it for a week. You won't want to go back.

I am using my eyes and the one youre talking about IS NOT LIKE THE OLD VERSION I want what we had before the update. The Fed no red alert is the same as the new fed except it doesn't glow red when youre under red alert

I want an option to use what we had last week

Afraid it's not possible. Was said by the dev that done the ui upgrade that because of the new code the classic ui could not be used. Not sure which pod cast it was but it was a couple weeks ago I believe.

HUDs are not supposed to be super-colorful. High-contrast elements and colors increases information density, making things more difficult to assess for split-second decisions. It also triggers what is called "cognitive capture", which means you're focusing more on instrumentation than the situation on your actual viewport.

There is a ton of human factors literature about HUD design in relatively stressful environments ( automobiles, helicopters, fighters ) etc., that I'm surprised there is no option to avoid these distractions. As one small example, a study of helicopter pilots and new visualizations for hazard indicators, shows that "Extensive detail, motion, complex shapes, too many colors, were all considered too distracting and possibly dangerous in the high- demand environment of shipboard helicopter operations. ( http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20040161158_2004147624.pdf )

Some people can deal with having a colorful display, but under stress conditions (aka piloting an escort) I prefer something that shows me what I need to see without increasing my cognitive load. Lots of real-world HUDs remain monochrome, and you'll see in most human factors guidebooks that the use of high-contrast color and animation should only be done for the most important signals and warnings, and not as basic layout. While I love the LCARS styling, LCARS-style interfaces are great for TV, not for actual user interfaces.

I.m finding that the new HUD is actually making me feel a little sick when i'm playing now and get a headache after about a 1/2 hour.

I don't expect them to change it and I'm not sure if it's the color, contrast, gamma or something to do with the frame rate the effects are there regardless. I've tried changing the colors, rez, etc and nothing seems to help. I'm seeing others in game bringing up the same thing.

keep in mind-long term player here. I've pulled 10-hour sessions at certain times and never had the effect I have now with this new "look".

    Thanks. That is all.

*edit-oh, yeah. they need to change to color of the names above NPCs. That blue they use tends to just blur into the backgrounds. That shade is too neutral imo.

It was a little disorienting for me, as well. Seemed too bright and there are way too many colors going on at the same time. Even after I changed it to Orion which has a lighter yellowish orange, it still seems to bright. There needs to be a way adjust the brightness of the colors and that should solve our problem.

Agree to many colors going on and to me the colors are very dull and flat. I have a tough time finding the buttons I need to click on.

Some how they can code it to add the old version or at least brighten the colors. The blues are so damn dull its hard to see anything

    And its to cartoonish

Can we at least have a two tone color HUD option?

My beef with the UI really has to do with the color coordinating with the icons. I feel the background should have been colored rather than the foreground. Even better, the color scheme should have remained the same for simplicity's sake.

I don't want to make a call to 'go back to the old HUD" because, as I've heard, it is impossible to change back. So (and I'm all for change being a Progressive), maybe what we need is some ability to change the colors ourselves on the hud....if only the intensity/gamma.

BTW, on that...where is the check-box for "Emotes" in the chat settings? I can't turn them on or off in any channel and they are only showing up in the default one.

I don't want to go back either. Id just like to see the Classic STO HUD as another option for those of us that like the old style

I just tried all the HUD options and I must say I am pretty much worried. All of them put huge strain on my eyes, too many colors I feel dizzy and constantly out of focus. I also noticed taht some of the text in the pop up windows for loot in the stf is barely readable. Did you guys noticed how horrible the reputation projects tab now is. the colors are too bright for the pictures it makes it look - weird at least (voyager scheme). But the most horrible thing is that all color clash. Too much contrast in between items. Player portraits are gone , now we have icons for ships - White for federation default I look at that part of the screen now constantly because it radiates white. The shields that blink all the time or target window that is over-glowing with yet again color clashing it is just horrible. And on top of that the very high detailed textures that in comparison with oversimplified HUD just do not look as good.

Funny enough that issue for me exist in space only, the ground combat and ground HUD is ok.

The Old UI is dead gone never coming back, no matter how much you want it, its gone it's just never going to be possible to put it back, as The Cat put it...it's Dead Jim.

And I for one am glad that ugly POS UI is dead.

This hud is blurry to me and some if the icons way to.big while others are to small. The difference between some of them while being activated is not enough of a color change. We need the option to make our own color scheme. I play on a 40" monitor and this new bud is awful!

    +1

The new screen just looks ugly. Just because some people had no taste that is no reason to remove the old version completely.

I initially had a problem with the new HUD as well as being very disorienting. I think the main reason is that there are very few borders around stuff now, whereas before there were hard borders around almost everything. Now, all the buttons tend to flow into each other.

After about a couple days to a week though, i dont have this problem at all. I think the new HUD is a bit jarring at first, which is what all new HUDs will be like, but the functionality is better, so i think it will be good.

It functions the exact same way as before. Nothing is new except the color schems. It makes the DOFF screen near impossible to read.

They just need to add 1 more option. Let me choose to use the schem we had a week ago

I'm seriously considering tampering with the game files to soften the damage done to the UI somehow, the colors and sharpness of these UI themes is just disgusting.

The aliasing is even more noticable as well now if you scale it down from 1.00

I know they dont approve of changing graphics locally on your harddrive by haxing the files, but hey what else is there to do?

Tacky colour schemes, irritating lack of borders, etc. The old one was far better colour wise.
