A "thank you" from the STO team-Question

cidjackcidjack Member Posts: 2,017 Arc User
I got this today through the support system, I asked my fleet mates and no one has heard of this, can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

If it legit, I'd like to know how they define valued members. Do you spend a lot of $$$ on the game or something?

I would also advise triple-checking every link you click on - this smells like a phishing attempt.

This might be legit, but I'm skeptical. Any email asking for a name and address sets off all kinds of internal alarms.

I mean, doesn't Cryptic already have your name? Why do they need it again?

Well, go to the support page and check it out, I suppose...

Go to the support page -on-your-own-, don't follow links from the email as that could lead to a false site if this isn't legit.

WHY would they need your address when Cryptic doesn't deal in physical items? WHY would they need your name when it's already part of your account?

It's obviously a phishing attempt. Kill it with fire.

Maybe they just found an overpayment and they need to be able to send the money back to you... they just need your bank account details, etc etc etc...

Games will never contact you by email and ask you to take any action, anything like that is a phishing attempt. If STO really wanted to offer something, they'd create an in-game event to claim a prize.

You will find out if it is legit or not when you account gets TRIBBLE. But it seems to me that right now that you are looking for some sort of justification from the community for following the links back. Looks like this is going to be one of those hope for the best, expect the worst kinda things.

Create a new ticket by emailing customer support directly customerservice@perfectworld.com

Send/click/discuss/mail/email Nothing else untill you get a reply from that address to the email you sent.

I'm going with the "It's a FAAAAAAKE!" on this one.

For one thing, announcements like this are always sent from a do-not-reply e-mail, which means you can't "respond to this email" to contact them.

Secondly, they e-mailed you. Obviously, they already have your e-mail. Why are they asking again? The logical answer is that the phisher is randomly firing off these e-mails hoping for a reply to find your real e-mail address to hack.

Thirdly, I hope you didn't click any links from the e-mail. Best go change your contact e-mail and login password right away.

If (39) and a half is good enough for the Grinch, then it's good enough for Scam Emails. :P

this. to say nothing of the fact that if it was legit they would tell you what it is they're supposedly going to send you
no MMO will ever ask for you user name password or email

this. even cryptic isn't this foolish. no mmo would ever, ever do this. it would be a serious security no no

I really, really hope thats a joke brandon, because if it isn't, your company just did several major no no's. you did everything a company is NOT supposed to do to ensure a user doesn't get scammed. this encourages other people to believe such emails are legit in the future when they get similar phishing emails.

this is NOT ok brandon. whoever thought it was at cryptic or PWE needs a serious talking to about account security scams

They didn't ask him for any of that. They asked for physical address information, and even said he could go sign in to the support portal to reply.
