So...about the rebuilt Deep Space Nine...

I don't know if any of you are following the Star Trek books, but an upcoming TNG/DS9 miniseries of novels called "The Fall" is coming in the fall of 2013, and it's going to be featuring a rebuilt Deep Space Nine.

For those either following the novels and not read it, or not following them at all, In the Typhon Pact series novel "Plagues of Night"...

SPOILER...

Deep Space Nine was destroyed.

In the upcoming books, we learn that over the two years following its destruction, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers built a brand new, advanced version of DS9.

For those who'd like to see it, here is a link that will provide some images:

http://www.startrek.com/article/andy-probert-and-douglas-e-graves-talk-the-fall

Now, before everyone leaps on the "Books are not canon" argument, keep in mind that the story of the Hobus star going supernova and destroying Romulus and Remus was written for the comic book prequel to the 2009 Star Trek movie, which has since been written into the canon for STO.

Furthermore, there are those who'd say that STO as a whole isn't "canon" either.

Therefore, it's perfectly reasonable and possible that the rebuilt DS9 could be worked into the STO "canon" retroactively. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that a major character hub was changed mid-game (Earth Spacedock, anyone?).

    Books aren't canon.

That doesn't mean some of them aren't highly enjoyable, though. There are certain kinds of storytelling that works better on a screen, and certain kinds that work better in books.

Some of the Star Trek books are quite good.

But no, they're not canon. For all that matters. To me it's an over-emphasized thing among people that have lost the plot a bit in the end. It's supposed to be about having fun first.

isnt the Hobus Supernova in canon for the Star Trek prime timeline? Just nothing else has really come about after it yet outside of STO and novels (both non canon)

No, all we know in canon is that a star exploded in 2387 and destroyed Romulus.

The events of the Typhon Pact novels are not supported by the storyline of STO, so they presumably wouldn't have any need to create the "new" DS9.

*Unless they blow up DS9 in a future mission.*

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

I'm inclined to agree, and honestly, I hope that DS9 never changes. But, all I'm saying is that it's not out of the realm of possibility. And as for the "it's not canon" argument, that's not a solid rock to stand on when, in essence, STO could be (and is, by some) considered "non-canonical".

    Just sayin'.

Looks nice and all, but it looks like a Federation station, not a Cardassian station, and that's important.

    It really is.

That new DS9 looks like something you'd see on the cover of a 1960's pulp sci-fi magazine, not modern Star Trek.

Heh, I thought of the one Sisko created too!

Also, if you do miss the first ESD from the older STO version, you can always recreate it on the foundry. The map is still there.

I like that STO takes some stuff from the books and not the crappy things from the books, and that is the crappy things...there was no need to Blow up DS9, and the way they killed off the Borg could have been better.

STO follows the lead of some books, such as those that talk about the Imperial Romulan State post-nemesis but pre-Hobus. However, it is selective, and doesn't involve, say, the destruction of the Borg in other books.

CBS has given STO the specific rights to involve some soft-canon elements. But STO can't just pick anything from a Trek book and run with it. They'd have to go through CBS to get the extra rights, and it's doubtful they'd want specific story elements enough to do so. They can make their own story elements and get them CBS approved much easier.

Hmm, well that's certainly an original design for a space station...

    Oh wait, no it isn't.

I like it. Except for the pylons. The reason they were there on the original is because they ended in airlocks so ships can dock. By joining them at the top, ships can't dock and it looks daft. BUT I hope they never get rid of the traditional DS9. With it being my favourite show, when I fly to Bajor I want to see the station I know and love. Same with ESD making it the mushroom station. The earlier ESD station wasn't bad, I liked it. But have it in game as a different station. With a game like this, you need to strike a balance between what would be realistic in game, and serving the fandom with these iconic locations.

So, since this is prime universe, and we have ships from the book-canon, does that mean we will see the new DS9 at some point?

only if cryptic wants it in and CBS says yes. Book cannon is kind of pick and choose.... like with the Vesta class, CBS would have to put a deal in with the creator of the design.

Hopefully with a new station design, if they do add it. The new DS9 is extremely ugly.

These posts about cannon and continuity are starting to get a little silly. This is a game. Cryptic puts in stuff that they can get a license for and what they think is cool. Imo the new ds9 looks dreadfully ugly. I could care less that some items from the books are in the game while others are not. Does it look cool and will people buy it? The answer to both questions was yes for the Vesta starship. That's why it exists in game... not because of cannon or continuity. As far as DS9 goes, instead of an ugly new version of the outside, I'd like to see corridors and crew quarters added, as well as a quark's bar that is opened up to the promenade instead of its own separate zone. Maybe they can even turn the station into an adventure zone. That would make this DS9 fan extremely happy!

Agreed. I'm a fan of the old Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers/Jetsons rings-around-everything, stainless-steel look, but that was a very ugly design.

That makes me think of the original DS-9 concept sketches... Graves' comment totally misses the point that the Cardassian design aesthetic of Terok Nor was what gave it its appeal and flavor :-\ Seeing this Federation station is like looking at the Russian copies of Concord and the shuttle or a cheap Rolex copy... Looks about right, but something a bit off... :(

As for canon/non-canon... Licensed comics and novels are soft-canon. They are officially correct, up to the point of deviating from established hard canon of film or TV, or if hard canon directly contradicts the comic/novel...

Holy cow, that's one ugly piece of a space station :D

I don't know what happens in those books, but if DS9 gets destroyed - why would Starfleet construct a new space station which totally contradicts their design in favour of an homage to an old cardassian station which became the symbol of opression and suffering for Bajor? :o

No thanks. Too clean. Not dank enough.

The dank is like an old friend. Cardassians, Klingons, Jem'Hadar have come and gone but the dank was always there when you needed it.
