Virus Notification on Patch

Hello chaps,

My anti-virus really doesn't like your crash reporter:

Is this something I should be worried about, or just a false positive?

    Avast...

That thing false alarms if you look at it sideways.

Anywho, McAffe doesnt seem to have any issues with the crash reporter, and before that Kaspersky didnt either if I recall correctly.

AV programs has a library of known viruses and how to deal with them.

However, they also have a tool that compares interaction pattern of new files with known patterns of viruses in said library.

That does not mean it's a virus... Only that some of the things certain programs do, remind the AV program of the patterns of viruses, dispute not being a virus.

Cryptic is a known, trusted source.

I would'n worry... Especially since other AV programs dosen't react to it.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

I had to tell Avast not to scan the STO folder during the install. That was the only way to get the damn thing to update.

A Malwarebytes scan of the folder post-update came back clean.

I had to go into Avast and turn off the file system shield for a moment for the patch to finish. Fairly simple work around.

Same problem with the Avast AV software, something on your computer is blocking it, possibly your AV software as well.

Behaviour patterns such as reading data from a file, and then transmitting that data out of your machine. I'd assume crash reporters have very similar characteristics to keyloggers in that regard.

Im getting this as well. closed the launcher 3 times and it then went directly to ready with a nice engage button.

Well, I was getting this too. It was just going in an endless loop, but it must have unlocked itself. When I went back to the launcher after reading your post it was waiting to engage. Hopefully it will fix itself if you give it a little time.

Thanks, that did the trick for me as well. I was like getting sadder by the second when I couldn't figure out how to make avast leave it alone x.x

    ERROR 36

    I got it resolved.

I just closed the loader and reopened it, the patch installed properly.

    No Avast! A/V problems either.

i never understood why players get all worried about these type of things.

as if cryptics best business practice to earn you money is to melt your computer with virus.

that's like walmart adapting a new money making strategy by turning every single customer away from the store so that the merchandise stays pristine and organized on the shelf

Yeah, this is a classic problem, and why some programs advise you disable your anti-virus software while installing/patching. It's hard for AV algorithms to distinguish a proper patch from a malware trying to insert code.

Not insinuating it's cryptic's fault at all - I'm well aware that it would be collosally dumb for them to stream viruses in as a patch. But that doesn't discount something else interacting with STO unkindly, or any other attack vectors.

Cryptic is having bad luck with Avast. It quarantined the Neverwinter launcher. Heh.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
