Antiproton Outdated?

I'm seeing a lot of stuff here on the forums and from players in game about how good the Romulan set and Romulan plasma weapons are. Almost every recent recommendation I have seen (granted, in the last few days) in terms of improving build has been suggesting replacing AP weapons with these weapons.

So, I ask, are Antiprotons now outdated? If so, why (links to threads/posts are good), and are they outdated for both PvE and PvP or just PvE? If not, then why have I started seeing this advice in threads?

Actually, I'd say it's the opposite. Now that there are Accx2 AP weapons they've actually become usable in PvP if you're going for a super-crit build. They're probably not the best, but they are definitely viable. And for PvE...who cares, use whatever you want...it won't matter.

    I've played with both extensively.

Plasma weapons are the most powerful PVE weapons in game at the moment. Anyone telling you different is a liar.

However for PVP, nothing even comes close to the effectiveness of antiprotons if combined with a proper crit build. I'm talking romulan + borg universal consoles, 3 romulan crit tactical boffs, and a bunch of points in the specialization of your choice. Plasma weapons can get the most base damage, but antiproton weapons are what gets the most CRITICAL damage, and crit damage/frequency is really something that decides in PVP these days.

There are multiple builds you can try with antiprotons. One popular build is the antiproton DBB with beam overload 3, Marion Frances Dulmur on active space duty, and the highest rank of directed energy modulation you can squeeze in. Another good build, one I fly extensively, is an antiproton DHC + DBB fore, with 2x beam overload Is and 2x cannon rapid fire Is, on a fleet Defiant with 2x quantum torps fore/aft, 5x 30% quantum dmg mods, adapted maco and rule 62 console - the torps are your primary armament in this case, whereas the DHC + DBB exists only to fire off special attacks frequently and kill your target's shield.

The main thing Antiproton has going for it is that it enhances CrtD. Every other weapon type in the game relies on a flat proc rate; most are a mere 2.5%. If you aren't built to boost crit chance, sure one of the others could easily be better for you; on the other hand, if you have only a 5% crit chance you should still actually proc the benefit of Antiproton weapons far more often than the other weapon procs are applied. Until there is a weapon that applies its proc on a critical hit, Antiproton still has a role to play.

Basically, just as Hybrid weapons trade a modifier for an additional proc, Antiproton weapons trade a proc for a [CrtD] modifier.

If you're firing once you really want the AP.

If you're properly CRF'ng you really want the AP.

If you're following one of the very popular "guides" for escorts and face rolling an all in one macro you really want the AP.

If you're doing something different, then you really don't want the AP.

Oh and the reason you're seeing this advice in threads is because the STO PVP forums is like a box of tools that for the most part are very safe to handle due to a decided lack of sharp pointy bits.

    Cheers!

Well, to be honest, I've been modelling a BoP similar to yours (not exactly the same, I doubt my skills are the exact same as yours). So, still AP I imagine...

    Thanks for the replies guys!
