I'm surprised that Cryptic/PWE hasn't upgraded their server hardware yet. With all the lag that Neverwinter and LoR have been causing to the live and beta servers, it's clearer than daylight that the hardware the current games are running off of simply isn't up to the task of supporting so much.
Blizzard saw this early on when they replaced their original server blades with newer versions that could handle the sheer number of players online at any one time, along with the number of people trying to download the latest patch. Take a leaf from the competition's book and use some of the money made from the legacy bundles to buy some new hardware for the game.
welp, ive downloaded 3.5 gb so far but now ive got another 7gb to go and its barely going faster than 2.5 megs per minute
so i guess ive got to wait till around another 10 hours

Hi Captains! We're closer to a resolution on the slow patching speeds that some are experiencing in the launcher. Thanks for your patience!
^ from their twitter, I hope it gets fixed soon these download speeds are erratic and honestly dumb, the excuse that others around the world are downloading it is a terrible excuse considering i have NO problem with any other games when patching at the same time as everyone else .
Spent over 4 hours downloading at ridiculously slow speeds, reached the grand total of 40%. Uninstalled game, opened Steam, installed game via Steam, 30 minutes later I'm finally in. Use Steam, and believe me I'm not a Steam fanboy by a long shot.
Funny, I started my 10Gig download at around 11:30am PDT and it was going rather fast. I checked about 30 minutes ago and it was now downloading a 201Mb patch. So far it's only downloaded about 2.8Mb of this in that time. Oooooooh boy.
Worked fine for me. No babysitting required. Though I am hearing a great deal of whining today...
Oh so you would not complain if your are waiting for food you ordered and it has been hours? Stop with these whining comments already. We are paying customers and should be treated as such. Shut your mouth with your belly full and go play the game. Forbid if I think dling 50mb that is taking over 5 hours to complete is not worthy of a few complaints on my side.
Heh... So, until this past weekend, I had never used Tribble. I read somewhere a warning that you needed to have space on your HDD for 2 copies of the game, so I loaded the game on a 2nd time, then had to sit through the patch for Tribble before playing. Turns out, that was unnecessary, but there it is...
Imagine my surprise today when the launcher is loading the ENTIRE mega-sized patch, despite promises that it'd be smaller/faster if you had the Tribble patch.
D'oh! Once I moved the "Playtest" folder from my "Extra" copy of the game to the original folder, things are going much faster. In the amount of time it took to patch 0.2%, I've now patched 95.6%!
EDIT: 30 mins, later, and the patching has slooooowed down. When I posted this, I was at 95.6%. I'm now at 97.5%. So... another 40 mins to go?

Downloaded pre-patch earlier per Cryptic suggestion and, yet, am now going on hour 3 of patching. Cryptic: makers of fine launchers everywhere.
Since this is a F2P game, I'm not surprised but I would hate to be someone who paid anything significant for STO and still have to deal with this complete lack of respect for the game's user base.
I'm wondering if it wouldn't be faster to just create a new install for STO/LoR since the installation seems to use some kind of P2P system. It certainly couldn't be slower.
