So its always bugged me how cannons look when we fire them in STO. They are all displayed in a pretty messy way. Each shot has some sort of bubble trail behind giving the impression that you may just be firing some sort of space liquid. For me this takes away from the Star Trek feel in space battles especially for Klingon and Romulan ships as well as the Defiant class Fed ships.
Why are the cannons not more, well, canon? What I mean is can we not make them look a little more accurate, take this clip for example, a simply Star Trek mod where cannons on both the Romulans and Fed ships look like the cannons we see in the series. No bubble like trails just small sharp blasts that actually feel like they are hitting their target and making the battle sequence much more cinematic.

By chaning the cannons to a simpler form we do two things, firstly we would reduce the amount shown on screen, due to the lack of these silly trails we have and thus improving performance all round as well as making the battles look and feel more like Star Trek.
I've never liked how the cannons looked in STO, they are so far from the series they just don't belong here, especially when all the other weapon effects like torpedos, phasers and eve mines, are all done so well.
Am I the only one who dislikes how cannons look right now and would like to see them changed to something similar like shown in the clip?

For any non-Starfleet ship, it's not too bad. Most are known to be bristling with weapons all over, sometimes hidden from view. But for Starfleet ships, whose main armaments have historically mostly been beam-based weapons, it's somewhat jarring.
Personally, I've always felt it'd be much neater looking if the cannon shots actually emanated from the phaser strips on Starfleet ships, but that may be just me.
Well, that's why most Starfleet ships outside of the escorts aren't really supposed to have cannons. It never really fits into the ship design.
It's why KDF battlecruisers come with the cannons built-in, along with most of their other ships.
Phaser and Disruptor cannons don't do what you describe. Tetryon and Polaron do. Not sure about Plasma and Antiproton.

Oh I know that. But if they set the cannon points to the various phaser strips on Starfleet ships, it'd do an incredibly impressive job of imitating the "phaser pulse" look from the J.J. movies.
Also, it'd make more sense, technically, since then at least you could say they're firing the weapons from the actual weapons banks.
Edit: Also, yeah, I'd love if weapons had different firing hardpoints for the same weapon type. I still remember my disappointment the first time I tried a federation cannon cruiser build and saw everything spewing out of the nose in single-file...
i know if i want see that i have to use the quad cannons, but what happen if i don't want to use that cannon???
Then yer not gonna see it "shooting like that".
In some cases the game does. An example is the Armitage class which has two heavy cannon ports and four regular cannon ports where you see the cannons fire from when you use them.
But I should like to say that there is no reason for them to make ANY noise (sound does not really travel in space very well)
Isn't that just the Defiant with a Quad-Cannon?
Wrath of Khan says you're wrong.

Enterprise clearly has dual cannons.
