In the game Star Trek TNG: A Final Unity (a magnificent game in its own right, if you have never played it, despite its age) there is a clip when the Enterprise docks with a starbase, of the ship coming out of warp and the space doors opening, complete with all the sounds we'd expect.
Who here would love to see PWE license that clip and insert your ship in place of the Enterprise, as an optional ESD cutscene, instead of the sometimes chaotic view outside of ESD?
I recorded the clip from DOSBox, take a look.

I'd love to see those added. :-)
Interesting. I've heard that Starfleet Academy was a game in a similar vein to a Final Unity. I haven't played it yet, perhaps I should. :-)
Yes, the scale is off, but consider, the cutscenes were pre-rendered and if the display resolution was higher than that of the clip, it was simply centered, not stretched, by the game engine.

Why don't *you* calm down instead?
Business talk done, on to personal;
I remember Final Unity, it was always one of my favorite computer games when younger. (Beating out Borg and Generations, the other two Star Trek games I had for computer) Actually, when I first started playing STO, I felt a sense of deja vu, the set-up was similar enough - space missions where you fly the ship and try to use diplomacy and phasers when that fails, ground missions where you lead an away team and fight enemies and solve puzzles on the ground. The biggest difference is that I can't tell my Tactical Officer to control the ship and fight the space battles for me like I could in Final Unity. Heh.
No, I'd have to say that I'm one of those who probably wouldn't mind if Cryptic could get the Garidians and Chodak into the STO galaxy. To be perfectly honest, if they could get the rights to the entire game and remaster it into a story arc to go along with the Fed/Klingon War, Romulan Mystery, True Way/Mirror Universe arc, etc.... I think I'd enjoy playing it again - with my own ship and crew this time...
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...
So the first time you see you're ship it's in spacedock and then it flies out. That idea is kinda cool.
But a custscene every single time I dock at every station? That would require a lot of time for new artwork assets that would not add much to the game.
IMHO, it would also get old real fast.
Add it as a wandering npc.. it's one of those things that if we bump into it... we're screwed.
My choice of avatar on YouTube isn't related to STO in the slightest. Stay on topic.
I don't see that similar cutscenes would *have* to be made for any factions, for example the KDF got along with much less content than the Starfleet side for quite some time.
As much as I loved A Final Unity, STO didn't give me that same sense of deja-vu, because it, like most MMOs, is all about grinding at higher levels.
To be honest, I wouldn't want Cryptic to get the rights to the whole AFU storyline - Just the cutscene I mentioned. I think that AFU's wonderful story should stay in *that game*, where it belongs, to give people a chance to experience it as it was meant to be experienced.
I disagree (obviously), but I can site a specific disagreement - It would add to the immersion factor, I believe.
To be honest, I'm no fan of Cryptic's brand of cutscenes, I think the animations look stilted and wrong. There is a screamingly obvious difference between a Cryptic cutscene and Star Trek on TV as we know it, and it shows, glaringly, to me at least.
If they did add this, I was hoping, that like the original, except for the model of your ship, the rest be a short pre-rendered clip, to address the quality issues.
And as much as I would love a cutscene for every station, this clip would play the first time we dock at ESD, and then turn off by default, with the option (in settings) of turning it back on and enabling auto-docking along with it.
I must agree. Adding enemies just for the sake of adding enemies somehow feels wrong. I feel that new additions should be backed up by solid story, and I fear that the Chodak would not be, in Cryptic's hands.
People been hoping for such cutscenes for a long time. But most people often point out the docking scequence in Bridge commander.
Given the first cutscene in Temporal Ambassador, where our player ship is transformed into a transport, I believe the technology is there that they could create a docking cutscene. And could easily activate when we fly in close proximity to the Spacedock Doors (since they open automatically when near).
That way players that don't want to go through the cutscene, could just hit the "dock" button and immediately transport inside.
Yeah, I remember that. The idea reappeared when we saw the F2P Trailer for STO, where we are inside the runabout, heading towards the Nova.
But yeah it would get annoying, so there is two possibilities I could think of.
1) Launch cutscenes can be turned off in the Option Menu.
2) Cutscenes only apply when switching ships. And the cutscene starts when you beam into Earth Orbit, you could hit the Escape Key to skip the scene if you wanted.
Because it would be ashame if it was only one time only that you got that cutscene, like with Spock's Sector Narration, which was so popular they gave us a way to replay it.
Me too!
9 Episodes = 30+ episodes...?

It's pronounced "S.T.O." "Stow" sounds idiotic! lol
But considering they closely resemble Roms in physical appearance I wouldn't expect much from it... Unless it is the brown'ish color of their D'deridex warbirds (if this is not already ingame on tribble).
I never finished "A Final Unity", somehow I always seem to have lost interest after a few days... So I never actually met the Chodak.
How could watching a cutscene where players have no control possibly be more immersive than actually controlling the ship as it docks? If you want to watch a ship in spacedock, go watch Wrath of Khan or Search for Spock. If you want to play a game...
There's far too many shabby cutscenes already in the game anyway. The only thing that needs the cinematic treatment is entering and dropping out of warp, and even then it would be better served from a bridge view, but that's not happening.
Not to mention Cryptics bad voice overs combined with the silly emotes.

I live in hope that we eventually get a ST mmo that does justice to the IP the way TOR does for SW. Because I don't recall ever doing exploration in this game. And I'm sick of grinding this mark, that mark, dil etc, that's not what Trek is about.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
This would be nice intro when you start a new Fed Char....
