How to win STO

kyeto13kyeto13 Member Posts: 3 Arc User
So, I can't speak for everyone, but I know alot of people have been having struggling with this game and the state of it. Their powers don't work as well as they like. Their class/ship is underpowered compared to others. They go into STFs or even PVP and they do not have the tanking/healing/DPS abilties of X, Y, or even Z. They are grinding away to the slave of their fleet's Starbase and their Reputation system that demands their time on top of everything else. They might have a favorite ship whose layout does not measure up to the lofty standards of an elite STF crew. they maybe finicalically strapped in real life for time and money and cannot get around to grinding millions of dilithium or giving hundreds of dollars to the game in order to advance stuff.

However, I looked through all of these issues in the game, all these shortcomings, all these twist and turns. I looked and I found a way out. There is a way to win this game. After that, all the DPS and the power grinding and all the time-gated stuff doesn't matter anymore.

Here it is... Brace yourselves...
JUST HAVE FUN!

YUP! That is how you win STO. You win the game when you are having fun. The specifics of it will vary from person to person, but the endgame for everyone is having fun.

You like science vessels? HAVE AT IT!
You want to be DPSy? GO FOR IT!
You want to Roleplay and ignore the war? AWESOME!
You want to be the best PVPer you can? YOU CAN DO IT!
You want to fly your favorite ship no matter what? PICK ONE AND GO!
You like to sit in ESD and tell gorn jokes? GORN AHEAD! YOU WON'T GET IN TRIBBLE!

That is it. When you keep this in mind, other people's decisions about their builds, their ships, or their classes, you begin to realize that the nerfs and bug squashing isn't to punish us or a specific subclass of the population. The Devs nerf and tweak stuff to preserve the endgame ("having fun")... FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED! The ships act differently to give variety to the game, SO THAT MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF PERSON CAN GET TO THE ENDGAME! Whether or not you win or lose a specific STF, event, or a PVP match doesn't matter, as long as you and other involved are having fun, you are all winning!

So, Shut up! Stop trolling people for their choice in class or ship. Stop flaming the devs for changing something that needed to be changed. Sit down, shut up, and get back to that endgame grind.. Having fun!

Well played.. that said I do believe there is some work to be done on balance but thats any MMO. We are reaching a critical juncture for STO with this new expansion, if they can bring back the other vessels/classes in popularity among competitive players I believe the game will stand long, if they fail, this simulated star trek reality I know and love will disappear in short duration.

Bravo keyto13! Personally, I get so caught up in my goals - earn this much dilithium, get this many omega marks etc - that I forget this is a game and is suppposted to be FUN. I already have a job that's not fun, I don't need to make this into another one. So thanks for the reminder that this is a game set in a universie which I absolutely love (and still believe could happen) and that I need to have FUN! :)

I love it when people are angry at or jealous of my level of fun. Just some notable examples over the years:

"That's not an optimal build for endgame! Why does he fly a ship like that!? It's not right! He plays differently than I do! I must make it my business and tell him he plays the game wrong!"

"You're a tactical officer flying a cruiser, instead of a l33t bugship like I do! I will hound you until you acknowledge that I am right and you are wrong and you go buy a bugship to be l33t like me!"

I play a science captain, and I alternate between a PBAoE torpedo boat science vessel and broadside cruiser. I have a DHC escort that I use to blow through solo content when I'm bored and/or in a hurry, but I prefer not to fly it given a choice.

Would be nice to see the science powers buffed, though.
Somebody getting uppity about canon? No problem! Just take a deep breath, and repeat after me:

What if them having fun involved said person doing the EXACT thing you say not to do? Not everyone has fun by not trying to be the best you know. Some have fun by actually trying to get the best stuff, or at least having something that can last against Tholians(i hate Tholians....)

The voice of reason has spoken, I will never understand why people take a game so seriously. It is one of the issues I had in Eve Online, too many players want you to play the game their way and treat everything like a full time job. If you want me to play the game your way, that is fine, you pay my subscription.

Second the motion to Sticky this thread.

Bravo! Bravo! Magnifico! Well said, Sirrah! Well said indeed!

The thought someone actually enjoys this game enough to overlook some of its flaws must be anathema to some. The radical notion of treating Star Trek Online as a mere game which is to be played, instead of treating it as the Holy of Holies delivered from on high by the Prophet Roddenberry(honoured be His name and in His service we grind) must also be a mighty big burr under some people's saddles. I can hardly hear you at all over the thuds of the FanBoys dropping to the floor in a faint, lol.

There are some who began baying for your head before you ever hit the 'Send' button. They view your ideas as a terrifyingly dangerous departure from decency and normality. Indeed, your ideas are a grave threat to their way of life("Got Life?" Yeah. Riiight.) As a honorable and proud member of the KDF, I swear my blade, my ship and my crew to defend you and others such as you from the dangers you will face from this moment on. And there will be great perils. Make no mistake about this. You will be hounded from the halls of ESD to the alleyways of Qo'noS.

Let them come, I say. And let others who think as you do come as well. In time, we shall defeat the Dark Forces of the FanBoy Oligarchy. We shall gain glory and honor for our Houses and ourselves by vanquishing the Ebil Minions of those who view Canon as the only 'correct' worldview. And on that day, after the last vile foeman has gone down to bitter defeat, we shall howl our war cry loudly enough to shake the stars.
"Hey guys? Last time we played STO was really fun! Thanks for letting me join you! Can Y'all come out and play?"

EDIT: Ooops. Forgot something. My Fed toons will also help with this. An ENG who flies an Escort and a TAC who flies a Science ship.

how can you have fun when you fail an STF?
asking for nerfing something is not trolling nor flaming! is the same situation as yours! you just asked for indulgence for those who play this game for shining lights and cute dresses, in the same way people asking for some balance in the game! i understand your frustration, but you have to understand ours too (we who play this game as an mmo not as a star trek game - i'm not a huge star trek fan i just like space mmos) and sometimes there are items and abilities that shouldn't be that powerfull or it should be more powerfull and they need some adjustments from the devs.
trolling people for their choice in class or ship is a bad attitude, but from your post i think most of the time you get confused. most of advanced players usually give advices if they see people doing low dps or not comply with tactics. those players are not trolling, they just want to help.
ofcourse there are some who start to swear and act like children, but i think most of advaced players are nice guys and whould help if the other person wants.

How can I have fun when I fail an STF? Like fun, 'Fail' is subjective as well. a lot of people view being unsuccessful at achieving the Optional as a failure. To the point where they bail on the team. And hurry right over to complain about someone else to anyone who will listen. And it isn't hard at all to find a sycophant or two around here.

I seldom play STFs. I find them all boringly easy and mindlessly repetitive. When I do play an STF, my goals are 1) Survive to the end without respawning. Regardless of success or failure. 2) Accomplish enough to score a couple BNPs and some Omega Marks. The Optionals and the loot drops are not really worth the extra stress and heartache a lot of people are willing to put up with. A Purple Mk X Shield Array? woo hoo. I have no intentions of imposing the way I view this game on anyone else. Some people really do enjoy playing STF after STF after STF. It would be rude for me to tell them they are doing it wrong. When people give me advice, I listen. Just because I did not immediately accede to their wishes does not mean I did not hear them or I am willfully ignoring them. Unless the advice is presented in a snobbish, arrogant, thoughtless manner. Despite what numerous posts would lead one to believe, this does not happen as often as presented.

There are some things I do not find fun at all. Not being able to carry my share of the load during a team mission. Interfering with someone else's enjoyment of the game any reason. The common ones are I haven't played the mission before or I am new to the team. People who insist my ship/ Away Team should be an exact match for theirs. People who TRIBBLE up a mission simply because they can.

Fun is simply defined for me. Did I enjoy the mission or episode I just completed enough so I will repeat it again? Did the Foundry mission I just completed challenge me enough so I want to play others by the same author? Did I enjoy being on the team enough I am willing to seek out these people again? And maybe join their fleet on a permanent basis? Will I do as well next time after changing my weapons out for a different type or swapping my Boffs around when I play this mission again? Will running this mission with a different ship next time be as rewarding? Am I enjoying myself enough I want to continue playing? Is there an alternate way to successfully complete this mission?

All of these questions are pretty much answered with either Yes or No. A No answer means I am not having fun and it is time to stop. For now. I can always try it again tomorrow. Or next week. I'd really like to have that just released brand new shiny. However, I most definitely am not going to chain myself to my computer for hours and hours just to get it. Like most things ingame, once it's there it's there all the time, So there isn't any rush to acquire it faster or first.
