Test ships before buying

vocmcpvocmcp Member Posts: 1,134 Arc User
I'd really like to be able to test "drive" a ship I'm buying. I am either paying with real money or have spent considerable time grinding. Consequently I don't want to end up with a ship I don't like and be stuck with it for quite some time. Especially since I'm fairly new to this (couple of weeks and just recently made it to VA) I don't know my way around every ship. I'd love to buy a fleet defiant at some point (after I get into a fleet :p) but I have made really bad experiences with my lvl 30 escort during missions and changed to a science ship. I didn't know how to spec back then (still don't.... ) so I would like to try again but I want to be sure I'm not getting myself into troubles again. This is a major source of frustration!

So how about a holodeck test mission and/or the possibility to take the ship into a PvE/PvP without any rewards granted.

So if you agree: post here and make it a long thread so Cryptic notices! You wouldn't just buy any car, so why would you buy any ship............

Edit: love the game otherwise ;) Thanks a lot for it!

We used to be able to do that on Tribble. But I guess testing them before you buy hurt sales.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

That would suppose that the ships are good. I can name a few ships I bought that I would not have if I could have tested them first. Cryptic must agree w/ me because they don't let you test them. ;)

Every Zen purchase you make is transferred to Tribble as well. So if you never made a C-Store purchase on Tribble, you can see how much Zen you have purchased. Right now, I can test drive a bunch of different ships if I want to without wasting actual Zen on them.

How does this happen??? I have 0 zen on tribble even though i have 4000 on holodeck. (Bought through steam, pre-paid cards, or dilth conversion)

I find this line of replies sadly hilarious. We put a lot of work into the massive list of fixes/changes above, and ya'll are hung up on the ability to skip our content. =p

lol, I'd guess those are the ways it doesn't work. I buy right from PWE via Paypal and it's automatic

IIRC, you need to delete your current Tribble Character and send a new copy of your Holodeck character to Tribble. Said new character should have your 4,000 Zen on it.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

You can test out the Odyssey variants, last time I checked. There is a vendor in the Tribble shipyard giving out free requisition boxes.

I'd love to be able to do this; especially if you could also try out customising the ship to see if you can actually get a style you're happy with.

For example, I bought the Assault Cruiser Refit, and while it's a great ship, I haven't been happy with the range of styles I can customise it with, as many of the pieces don't go together properly at all, so I'm just sticking to the Regent for now until I can unlock the Imperial Class to see if that gives me any better options. If I'd had a chance to try it beforehand then I might have opted for something else instead, as ship appearance is at least as important to me as how capable the ship actually is. Might have gone for the Odyssey set instead as while it's even less customisable, I much prefer the Odyssey style to the Regent.

I'd also love to try out the Chimera Heavy Destroyer, as it's a pretty big investment to get one. Currently I'm just ignoring it, but if I really liked it I might be tempted to take the plunge.

It would be nice if there was a way to do this without having Tribble.

And this shouldn't apply to just C Store ships - every ship in the game should be test-driveable. Some people might like to try out the three types of tier-2 ships before making a decision, even though it's a free ship.

Assuming you get the free ship token, then you can just go to Tribble to test it out. I did it every time I got to a new rank a few years ago. Just transfer 3 copies to Tribble when you get your ship token, but before you acquire your new ship.

Well, there are those of us who don't like testing games we intend to play, nor do we want the test server taking up extra gigs of space. So for people who can't or won't install Tribble, a live-server test drive would be nice.

Assuming you're familiar with how all the stats and abilities work, and how effective they are, you should be able to divine whether you'd like a ship based off of the publicly-available information on this useful website: http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/

I agree, though, that some method of test-flying a ship would be nice. It'd be a simpler approach to figuring out whether you want a ship. I, however, can usually tell if I'd actually like flying a ship just by looking at the stats and playing around with the skill planner.

I have suggested this before. Make some tester missions: tank, dps, and crowd control. Have them at DS9 at a holodeck and it costs GPL to run a simulation.

Keep the mission simple so it is not enjoyable enough to replace the desire to buy the ship, but make the GPL cost low enough not to be an inhibition, but not permit constant repeat use. Using a cool down would make it difficult to run back to back tests of different ships for effectiveness.

Players have been asking for this for a while now (over a year).

It's not going to happen until people stop being zen-store ships.

However they may sell more if it was done. I got my fingers burnt on the MVAE, I don't like it, now I am less likely to pay up for a ship. I am not saying it is a bad ship I just personally do not like it.

It was a toss up at the time between the MVAE and the Dreadnaught. I'd read up on the builds, and I liked two one for the MVAE and one for the Dreadnaught. I chose to go MVAE first, so now I am unlikely to buy the Dreadnaught, however if I had done it the other way round then things might be different.

I doubt I am the only one who goes by the saying "once bitten twice shy" especially where money is concerned.

A couple of years back I bought a ship that I didn't like and I haven't bought one since. I've thought about it, but just can't bring myself to do it. I didn't know about the tribble thing, I'll try that. Please set up something other than tribble to test ships out.

the problem is how long would you fairly need to test them before you chose to buy or not, an hour, a day and on how many characters?.
then cryptic would have to put some bit of programming in place to restrict testing duration and retesting across multiple characters to make sure it wasn't abused.
I should think it would take some programming on cryptics part to implement and for the small difference in potential gain not worth the effort.

there are plenty of vids on youtube that show how different ships handle so there is really no need in cryptics eyes anyway.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

    I think the concept is

    + Less impulsive purchases
+ Potentially playing those ships for free long enough to not care about them

Is kind of like saying you don't have faith in your product if people who actually try it won't like it, isn't it though?

Same thing with banning no subs from the test server.

You'd assume they would love for people to try all and any ship because of their so-called "standard of quality", you'd automatically start buying ships left and right.

I think Cryptic figured out that most people would not like ships they tried and wouldn't buy them if given a test drive.

I know I would not have bought the Atrox or the Kumari Pack if I had had a chance to try them. Lost interest in the Odyssey after trying that. Most ships in STO are just bad ships. They have to sell those lemons to someone...

Please don't necro post dead threads. The mods are only going to lock this and your request will be ignored and forgotten.

Why not necro post dead threads? Why/how is that important?
