May Traits (and possible retrait tokens)

flash525flash525 Member Posts: 5,441 Arc User
I know we're two months away yet, but does anybody know (of have any good guesses) as to what is going to happen with the new trait system, and whether we'll be able to re-trait current characters?

I've got an Engineering character at level 50 with both the Omega and Romulan Reputations complete (I've also invested a lot into several fleets, and have the MACO Ground Set). When I created him, I wasn't so clued up as to the best traits for said toon. I'd rather not have to create a new character just so that I can get the traits right.

Add to that I've got the Jem Hadar Escort and Galor Cruiser on him, as well as the Chel Grett. Seeing as Cryptic wont currently allow us to rebox our ships and trade them between toons, this further frustrates me cause the traits I'm running with aren't best suited for my style of play.

I know a re-trait token has been mentioned countless times; my current thought is that they've not created a re-trait token cause they're going to allow for something similar with the May Update (we already know there is a new trait system in place). I'm just wondering whether anyone has an inkling of what is to come, and how it'll effect already existing toons.

That is all.

I'm pretty sure there will be no re-traiting, since DStahl said that would be later in the year, IIRC. There may be 'advanced' (i.e. additional) traits.

BTW, don't worry too much about traits. They are nice, but hardly make-or-break for a character.

    They've shared...nada.

    Big announcement...Romulans!
    Details...nada!

Guessing we're going to have them leaking itty bitty bits until May 21st - with them likely even holding some surprises back until it actually does launch.

    I run 8 Aliens.

Depending on how things are with LoR...I'll be running 4 more Aliens.

My guess is that the trait system will be expanded quite a bit, to allow for more advancement
    and personalisation at max level.

I noticed that the new character screen UI has a new button for traits:

    http://images-cdn.perfectworld.com/en/sto/redesign2012/legacyofromulus/large/s8.jpg

So I'm thinking it must be somewhat expansive to get it's own tab and all..

The expansion page only says "customize and rearrange your existing traits",
nothing on changing the ones you have. But it might just be ambivalent wording I suppose.
However I think this would be the perfect moment to introduce a re-trait option,
if they're putting in an entirely new trait system and allowing for more customization.
At least that's what I'm hoping!

Hey, maybe Romulans are naturally Accurate and Elusive. :)

From what I've read, and from what I've been told in fleet chat, traits make a significant impact with game play style though.

I'd read 'rearrange existing' as editing personally, otherwise what else can it mean?
At least that's what I'm hoping!
You and me both, and like you've said, this would be the perfect time to do it.

If it requires an entirely new tab in the player menu, I imagine it would be some sort of progression tree. As a toon gains skill points, they can choose from a number of traits which are arranged in a tree, ideally with the most effective traits at the top and on separate branches, for balance purposes. Obviously this would render all existing traits obsolete, but it is a system I would welcome, for captains and boffs. Unique race traits could be retained, or offered as special alternatives on the tree, unlockable only by that race.

Well, this is what they say on the 3rd page of new features:
Customize and rearrange your existing traits. Unlock new advanced traits and abilities, further specializing your captain and crew.

    Customize and rearrange seem...odd, no?

Rearrange? Why would you need to rearrange?

    Aha! SPECULATION!

The ability to rearrange traits depending on if you're on ground or in space?
The ability to have a pool of traits and rearrange which traits are active?

Yeah, meh...will be nifty as more info comes out. As much as I enjoy speculation, there's just too little info to do anything other than wild speculation which isn't as fun. Also, it can also lead to getting hopes up, disappointment, and all that other good fun stuff, eh?

See, a Trait Tree where you can select which Traits are active as you progress up that Trait Tree... I could speculate on that!

But we won't know until we know...meh.

I think traits will become gear, effectively, making the idea of Retraits obsolete. Probably not too far from what glyphs are in ********.

And rather than push Retrait tokens (I doubt most respec/etc. tokens sell very well) they'll probably just constantly push new traits for sale via rep, fleet progress, c-store bundles (maybe with costumes as either alone might sell poorly), and lockboxes.

Also would not be shocked if species becomes a similar equippable item.

Yep...could see most of that as well.

Different glyphs, er traits, available for "free", for Dil, for Zen, for Lobi...

I image it more like an "Active skill" thing. if it is a tree based progression, once you unlock a trait you can put it into your active skill list upto a certain number of skills, with the more advanced ones taking up more slots. with possibly a different set of skills for both ground and space so that you dont have to spec for one or the other instead having a separate space trait set and ground trait set.
