Does the community want an actual monthly tournament style event (with a basic rule set to apply to the entire event)where teams earn points over the course of the tourney to determine the winner?
OR
a monthly one off event where each month has its own rule set, and its down bracket elimination style to determine the winner?

Rule sets suck, it has been shown over and over that it makes little difference in pvp.

Sadly a basic set of rules would apply to either one. I'm more interested in finding out if people want a long term or short term tourny

I'd start w/short term tourney's for a couple of reasons. A series of short term tourneys will allow newer fleets to learn from previous tourneys, acquire more time to get caught up in the power creep cycle, and provides experience/baseline for orginizers to hone rules.
Also, the power creep changes often enough you may get put in the position of changing the rules mid tourney which I'd think is something you'd want to avoid.

The community isn't ready for any turnys right now.
However if we start doing things like "lethal lotteries" on the weekends... I think we would be doing a much larger service to the community in general.
I think we have a good time right now where we have lots of new PvP players... many of whom don't really have a fleet they run with.
1) we can fill the ranks on a few more fleets.
2) we can perhaps start a few more fleets.
3) those guys are going to have a lot more fun
4) some of the old guard and new guard may become a bit more friendly
I think bottom line we will shoot ourselves in the foot a bit taken the good will people have built in general with things like boot camp... and throw a lot of it away acting like we act in tourny mood... I find that atmosphere fun as most of the old guard do... the new guys. We need to ease them into it.
I think what we need is someone to put together a lethal lotto day, myself.
Lets get people showing up on a weekends looking for some fun... and at some point it will be clear we have hit a boiling point where the community will support a proper tourny.

We have new blood, but because of time gated power creep. "Ban GVP and TI, otherwise bring what you want" is no longer feasible.
Lethal lottery sounds like a great idea, so do your themed events. People need month to finish T5 starbases, and the rep grind to make competitive pvp toons. I'm think we all should just wait a little longer.
Otherwise I prefer the second option.

am i the guy that tsi and sad pandas get along with and also everyone else does to. i think so, gavin would surely join any tournament id vouch was legit, know that! there are legions of good pvpers lurkers who would join if called. hundreds on f lists and hiding out in other games on teamspeaks waiting for the call
i think ultimately your going to see different camps of people form up, i hope u dont hide in the no p2w tournaments or keep any p2w out of tournaments, i know how much u liek to use it in duels mai kai
