Okay, I am not trying to start a flame war and I am still relatively new to the game. I started back in September. But for whatever reason I am having tons more fun flying my cruisers than escort. I started with a tac / escort, played it for months, and spent some time tweaking it with the best build(researched) and purple XI and XII fleet gear.
I started my engineer / cruiser and at first it was slow going. However, once I started going up the ranks from lt cmdr and getting the boffs and powers it was pure awesome sauce. I have had no problems scoring 1st and 2nd place consistently in fleet actions. I can even do it if I come in late into the action. I even had a couple of fun PvP sessions in my brand new Sovereign.
No such luck on my escorts. I am obviously using boffs, maneuvering, stacking the consoles and tetryon heavy cannons, etc. Now I will grant you that I can't hope to match the mad skills of LTS or their OP gear. But still there is something about escorts that rubs me the wrong way. I think it is the aft weapons. They mostly go useless for me. The best I have done is to put a mines, quantum launcher and turret. If I have a perfect run where I soften the shields with tachyon, cannon fire, aceton and then turn around and hit it with a volley of torpedos (torpedo spread). Thus I can pop a cruiser in one pass. But this happens only with a perfect run.
Okay, so I spoke my piece ... and cruisers rule!
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
I won't come in here and star yelling about how Escorts are the best and you are an idiot for not flying one, because I don't buy it. Yes, I will admit that Escorts are the best ships if all you care about is damage, but the "optimal" Escort builds are, IMO, boring as sin.
If you're comfortable with your Cruiser, have fun flying it, and still contribute during team gameplay, by all means fly it. Elitists who come down on players who aren't in an Escort are morons who forgot rule #1 about gaming - it's all about the fun. The world will not end if you miss an optional in an ESTF, it doesn't matter one bit to the rest of world that you can run Infected in less than 6 minutes, and the rage that some people throw out is, well, inconceivable (Yes, I know what that word means).
Wow...got a bit off topic there...set course back where we started:
It boils down to this, if you contribute to the team effort (when you're doing team stuff), and you're enjoying yourself, ignore the idiots and have a good time, that's what games are for.

You need to find some better sins, if what you're doing now is as boring as flying a tacscort packed with DHCs and Turrets. :P
Completely agreed, otherwise.
If you have fun playing this game, you win. Even if you die a lot and rank toward the bottom in damage output on your team - if you're enjoying yourself, you're a winner.
The best ships and builds are the ones that make you laugh every time you go into battle.

This is why I have an alt Eng. she's fun as hell to play. I still see plenty of 'noobs' in scorts not know wtf they are doing. Don't worry, be happy.
hey escorts rule. great dps and now very easy to tank. in my opinion escorts have everything.
that said i think i have more fun flying my 2 science ships even though science abilities for the most part are way less effective than in the past. but sometimes i just love playing the shield stripper and repair man and at times gives me more fulfillment than just blasting the enemy in one short pass. play what you want to play and forget what the egomaniac kiddies haft to say.

"Cruiser > Escort (for me)" <-- Well, if this is what u believe.... good for u. I don't see the point of this thread at all.
Props to you for playing for fun instead of 'numbers', OP!
I personally haven't delved too deeply into cruisers yet, but my recent months spent tinkering with science ships and torpedo builds has awakened me from the 'blaster boat' escort slumber much of the community seems to be stuck in and completely changed my perspective about how to play the game.
I will say that cruisers continue to surprise me with how well they can mix weapon types and still be quite effective(Quad turret with DBB and torpedos really surprised me with its performance). They are the most complicated to set up power levels for though - even moreso than offensive science ships.
Cruisers definitely have the higher defense to offense-ratio. While escort can do around 1,5 times the damage cruisers can (played with different teams, different setups etc., if you are going with an premade team and apb, they can effectively do 2 times the damage of a good cruiser setup over a whole stf), cruisers can tank 3 to 4 times the damage an escort can. Ever tanked 3 taccubes in hive elite? Quite the fun part with a cruiser, quite the hell for an escort.
I have fun with my tac-esc, eng-cruiser, sci-sci-torp-boat, but I know how to do damage and dont have problems with taking down a normal cube like the average player. In fact you can do damage with every ship and every class, you just need to know how. Unfortunately ppl try to fly a cruiser like an escort, while they obviously not the same and are surprsed when they do probe-like damage and cannot even tank one or two spheres.
Like it has been said before it is all about having fun. As long as we can gear and keep progressing it is fine. I think the obsession about balance is what kills MMOs. Devs never get it right and it is the source of endless threads and discontent.
I just wanted to say that I was pleasantly surprised after expecting the worst from stalking these forums.

i lol'd.
but yeah, play what and how you like. doing uber l337 deepeeess is pointless if you're not having fun doing it. i look forward to seeing your space whale in action someday. good hunting!
Fun first every time. Cruisers can be a valuable addition to any STF team. I happen to agree, I like flying my cruisers over escorts any day. That's just the flavor I prefer. I enjoy gearing up and squeezing every bit of performance I can out of cruisers to make the most of them. It's true, an amazing cruiser build will still never touch the pure dps of a escort. And many escort builds can tank nearly as well as cruisers. But if it ain't fun for you, why bother? Fun and performance need not be at odds, just some folks make it out that way. Cruisers ftw!
The other day i was in an estf with 4 carries and a cruiser. We beat it in about 5 or 6 minutes.
I am still pretty new to this game and have not tried carriers yet. I loved them in Starfleet Command!

I have always believed that you should fly the ship you love, not the ship that is the best at that moment.
Me? I love Science vessels. I like being able to find creative and out of the box ways of kicking your TRIBBLE. I have an awesome Vesta class that I have been modifying over the past six months and its fun. I enjoy the game even if I dont have the max DPS of map.
As i have to remind the PVP section of my fleet. This is a game. Have fun with it. It's not always about the numbers.

any timed events such as STFS and fleet missions escorts are better..
but it doesnt really matter if you join the KDF.. all their ships are cruisers with cannons

shuttles> escorts they are the best best turn rate and everything else they need a nerf IMO
It's one of the things I love about creating new characters. I'm able to use my fighters and shuttles "competatively" in PvE. They're just a blast to fly and I still hope that we'll get more shuttle events ands perhaps even a dedicated shuttle PvP-map.
Despite being successful in my escorts in PVP and PVE I returned to cruisers recently and must confess that I agree with the OP. I have an all cannon/turret build and really enjoy it more to be honest. Obviously in PVP, my DPS has dropped but you know what its rare that I walk away without any kills! That is what its about at the end of the day, team work! A cruiser can be made very viable with dedication and the right build. I must also confess that I feel more like I am in a Star Trek game when flying cruisers too, imho.
Nice video nicha0! I personally keep making the mistake of trying to reverse quickly in my cruiser like I use to do in my escort! Old habits are hard to break and I die as a result usually! lol

I really enjoying flying my Galor on my KDF main and my D'Kora on my Fed-alt. Cruisers can bring a lot to a team and shouldn't be underestimated.
I've set up my Galor to do reasonable damage but can only tank and help buff a few allies every now and then. Working as a team is very important to me, that's why PUG's annoy me as so many don't communicate or work as a team.
The social aspect in this game is rather poor imo.

I like my cruisers on my eng toon too particularly my ambassador.
Its quite satisfying to get the damage up on them too and its very possible to do it, alot easier if you do use key binds which I don't so I have to what were I m flying, my power levels think of what situation I m in..how much damage I m doing..what Boff to pop next...etc
Its good fun getting it right you know striking the enemy with 700 damage per hit( thats very good don't you think? for a cruiser..)
Yes fine my escort can very easily match 700 per hit but you see here is the point, its easy. cruisers require that much more to get them to a good level, thats the fun of it.
Lol, speaking of people saying that... tho nearly wholly unrelated...
I was in my Atrox a while back, in ISE. Some hothead tacscort started going off about how horrible the Atrox was. (I'm being quite polite where he was not, but his tirade was not appropriate for the forums)
Didn't let up all run. Vile spew the entire time.
My Sci/Catbox did over double the DPS he did. Yeah, Escorts > all.
Most of the people who have strong opinions like that don't actually test anything. They hear something and go off like they have some bit of knowledge that actually means something. They don't, they are just parrots.
When you actually take the time to do a thorough analysis, things are a lot closer then the common "wisdom" would lead you to believe.

if you had said tac in a cruiser it could have been me as I find the Atrox weaker then Galactica by the end of BSG and hate that I wasted $ on it. but then again I usually alwasy end up back at my main ship, the one in my sig
Fly what you want to fly, the way you want to fly it, for whatever reason you want to fly it. It's a *game*, and the idea is to enjoy it. Except Cruiser turret skittle boats. Don't do that. ever.

Its difficult to get hot-headed DPS players to understand that not all of value shows up as raw numbers in a log at the end of a run.
