Never used gear except random loot and mission rewards in episodes while levelling. Never use batteries
When i did run into that ship on my first and second char, i had problems. Took me half a dozen deaths to kill it. And yes, it was far more dangerous than anything else i had encountered.
But after that it was easy the 3rd time and further. Just had learned to react on torps in time (fire at will, brace for impact, emergency to shields) and maneuver around it. Still didn't know about TT or hazard emitters. Didn't really bother with build until endgame.
But it was a viable lesson that certainly made me better at this game. Never had problems with Scimitars. The first next thing that made me really learn to use my ship better was STFs.
So... don't give up, you will manage it eventually. Even without forum advice. There are around a dozen workable strategies and you will stumble over one of them sooner or later. Probably one that suits your play style.
I've just beaten it with a research vessel, those heavy plasma torps also hurt the warbird if you are at pointblank range ,
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Ah, yeah, the great myth that all this build and gear management TRIBBLE somehow equals an MMO being about skill, and thinking, and being all strategic like this is chess. No MMO is chess, they all are pretty much unskilled entertainment like Tic Tac Toe.
Just keep up that attitude when you reach endgame and STF's .
People are just going to *love* you ... .
Yeah the only midly difficult klingon battle I was challenged with, well there are a few, but the main one I had trouble with early on was the one in the Briar Patch where you need to take out the turrets and the ships, and not only that but you can't get full impulse because of the nebula stopping you from doing that. That coupled with the gas clouds that were part of the movie where Riker used his joystick "rolls eyes" to blow up enemy ships made that mission a tad difficult.
However as others have pointed out in this thread, any mission is easy as long as you use the right tactics. Also the day I did finally figure it all out was one of the most fun days I had playing STO because I was finally able to win that mission! And that was very satisfying indeed after being blown to bits so many times before that.
Now when I come across a mission that is difficult I am happy because instead of charging in guns a blazing, I have to stop and think how to approach it and use tactics...
Try answering an incoming red alert as you are in Sirus sector and warping out to meet the borg...haha good luck charging in guns a blazing with that one...you will be assimilated thats for sure

Funny... I do that all the time. The Borg don't enjoy it.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.
Oh man, your 100% DPS build doesn't fair so well when you park it right in front of a warbird and roll your face against the keyboard? Sad stuff. How much do we need to buff Rapid Fire for you to pass the mission? I'll get the devs right on it.
I seem to recall TBRing my way through that boss. Lazy man's way out. The Borg had more or less taught me how to pew down torps by then (I got obsessed early on with collecting all the Unimatrix kills), but it was funnier to just TBR them off. Added bonus of shoving the D'deridex out of tractor range, too.
They really would, you know. If it's all about buffing escorts, they'll be all over it in a heartbeat. If it's about buffing cruisers/science ships, they'll be all "Meh".

Don't even joke about that, man, they WOULD.
