Possibility of melee ships?

emacsheadroomemacsheadroom Member Posts: 994 Arc User
I'm sure by now you're all familiar with the 'classes' found in most MMOs and the way that Star Trek Online covers them pretty well. We have healers/tanks (Cruisers), dps (Escorts), and support and control (Science ships). This game has a gross omission, however; a melee class. Has Cryptic ever considered a ship that can only hit from a few Space-meters away?

Anyways, just a random thought I had. I'm sure Cryptic are always looking for ways to keep up with other, similar games on the market.

Sorry, but there's nothing in Star Trek that equates to anything like a melee Starship. The closest we get with meleeing in ships is Ramming, and that's available to everyone under certain conditions.

Come to think of it, don't think there is anykind of Science-Fiction genre that uses such things, except one. I seem to recall one series having a space fortress plowing through ships, but the name excapes me. Think it was in a Japanese Anime.

This! Maybe some sort of mechanical claws, and the advantage to offset their melee-status would be that they completely ignore shields and go right for hull.

In Homeworld: Cataclysm, there is a ship called the Ramming Frigate. The ship kind of looks like a hammerhead shark. As far as STO goes, I can only see a ship like this as a carrier pet.

Now you're getting it! They could even add special consoles for ship melee weapons like a chance to score a "vorpal" hit that would sever a cruiser's saucer from the secondary hull for an instakill.

Actually that would just be more like an uncommanded Saucer Sep...

I don't see why we can't have a ship that extends part of itself to penetrate a target's hull and then unleashes a storm of torpedoes inside the other ship. Wouldn't that be awesome?

No, escorts attack from range like every other currently flyable ship.

Could always go with Voltron. The only things that got into melee range in space in Star Trek were lifeforms that sucked the energy out of the ship. Star Trek combat always dealt with dealing damage from a distance. If a ship is in melee range, then there is a good chance that the ships will unintentionally collide and cause damage to both. So ships would have to be designed around melee range rather than just adding a piece of equipment.

Star Trek hasn't presented any melee capable space craft. If this game where to incorporate melee space vehicles, it would have to gain ideas from other shows and stores or come up with something totally on its own.

The closest thing I have seen to melee capable space able machines usually show up on anime as mobile suits, mechs, arm slaves, or what ever else that looks like 3 or 4 story high gun and saber holding walking machines.

You would end up having to refer to shows like Mobile Suit Gundams, Full Metel Panic, Neon Geniuses and maybe even Outlaw Star. But most of those would not be very... trek like in design.

You are looking at a long shot, and a very very far distance one at that. Unless paramount manages to make something on its own for a TV series or a movies, I doubt we will see one in game.

I can't see how "space melee" could be added to STO, or Star Trek in general beyond ramming them. Too me ramming would be more the line of heavily armored ships, not Star Treks flimsy hulled ships. See Nemesis when the Enterprised rammed the Scimitar. That "narrow" edged hull didn't slice into the Scimitar, both were crushed flat like a tin can.

So unless we get shuttles or starships made purely out of neutronium I don't see how we could have a "melee" class.

Escorts can be considered our close range ships due to cannons being more effective as you get closer.

I suppose what you could have is a spaceship with a spinning circular blade which circles around the hull, but i suppose that any "melee" ships CANNOT be part of the federation. Remember that Feds are all about peace and love and monkeys and fairys, so such a vessel would have to be restricted to KDF.

Instead of "pure" melee, what about some sort of ship with a very short range energy burst. One that can be given devastating damage, but only if its next to its target?

Well Star Trek dose not have the technology to have Gundams or robots, But now that they have power armor pretty sure mechs are not long off. :D

Reboot to TNG will have Data being a space aged Android
    He is at your command.
    Data the space aged Android,
His power is in your hand.

Bigger than big, taller than tall,
Quicker than quick, stronger than strong.
Ready to fight for right, against wrong.

i suddenly have visions of the new Galaxy-M class, AKA Galaxy - Mace in your face. Modified Gal-x with 2 multijointed arms fielding a mace in one hand and a Claw gripper in the other (to hold said speedy escort in place whilst mace-ing said squishie annoyance), along with a klingon forehead style prowl for when the need to ship-butt arises

What power armor? I see some EV suits not all that different from what was shown in First Contact and Enterprise.
How the Devs see Star Trek, apparently:
    Star Trek: The Original Grind
    Star Trek: The Next Grind
    Star Trek: Deep Space Grind

Three pages and no mention of the Supermobile?

Hey. Kryptonite showed up on a Star Trek periodic table in one episode.

And there was a Vulcan Green Lantern named Saarek who used the Vulcan salute.
