I have finally FOUND my salvation. For months I have been looking for a ship that appeals to me and has the firepower I have been craving without having to turn into an "Escort Junkie" or "Fighter Jock" as our fleet call them.
Then it dawned on me... The Galaxy X Cruiser is primarily a Galaxy (my favorite ship) and it can load DHC's. So I did a little experimentation and found a Galaxy-X Cruiser that is essentially a fantastic mix of a cruiser and escort.
A lot of people complain about the Gal-X's turn rate but as somebody who's always flown cruisers I barely notice this. Not with the advantage of cloaking... I went into a PvP, snuck up on an Andorian Escort, decloaked, Phaser Lance, critted and then opened fire with my three DHC's on the front and High Yield Quantum and utterly obliterated that little fighter jock.
He then decided to whisper me with abuse, as Escort pilots usually cannot take Cruiser's beating them. But its all good...
My point is, Tachyokinetic Converter gives you a +22% Turn Rate to the Dreadnought making more then capable to use its cannons. Sure, Escorts will try to get right up your but as they do but if you stick some nice mines of high yield plasma's on the rear, even warp plasma gets rid of them.
So don't count cruisers out yet... A lot of it is ability with the ship you have, not just the ship itself. It doesn't matter how many guns Cryptic gives these escorts, a knowledgeable and powerful cruiser captain can take them down.
So don't despair Cruiser guys... We just need to unite and stay strong and show these Escort junkies, we ain't going anywhere!
Basically, this is my Galaxy-X (same as a canon D'Deridex Warbird), there are others like it but this one is mine!

Well... a lt. Cmdr tac wouldn't hurt the Galaxy -X just as the universal Lt.
Giving it a additional Tac console would also give it a bit more teeth.
Some, like you for example who would like to use instead only Lt. tactical BOFF powers are still free to use just a Lt.
Similar to the Tac Consoles. You want only 3? heck, so use only 3.

I can't see anything bad with admgreer suggestions TBH.
On the other hand giving a ship that is capable to use heavy cannons only a lt. tactical seems to me like a evil joke.
But hey, that's just my opinion, i am sure you are much more qualified to judge something like that much better than me.

FACR. Turns better than a Galaxy-X, has a better power layout, and has more hull. Can't load DHCs, but with my BAs, I can actually destroy a surprisingly large number of escort pilots due to the 4 tac consoles and LtCmdr tac station. Gives you a surprising amount of firepower for a ship using BAs. Also doesn't TRIBBLE me with firing arcs.
So yes, cruisers are viable damage dealers if built and used properly. But they still have a long way to go before coming anywhere close to a lot of escorts.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.

Unfortunately the FACR is limited due to its use of beams, unfortunatly to beat the Escort, you have to play their game a lot. Escort pilots are usually the ones in the game that do not want to put a lot of effort into the game so they grab the fastest and highest damage ship possible.
Our job as Cruiser Captains is to slow them down, make them helpless and then blow the $?%$ out of them. I personally believe that Cruisers should have "side" guns instead of front or back so we can load cannons either side of a broadside and fire like old galleons but alas, they are what they are.
The FACR is a good ship and kudos for you for flying it. But best number of Tactical Consoles, does not mean best ship. This is what Defiant junkies fail to understand.
Just why do so many cruiser captains want to be the best tanks and the best damage dealers both?
If cruisers get higher damage outputs, Escorts should get more hit points and survivability to balance it out. And where it would put Science ships I don't even know.
Why can't people just leave what is working instead of trying to fix and break it?
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

With your build, I would go with an Jem?hadar eng. (for better turn rate) with the maco def and shield or the borg def and shield.
And for those that not have an Tachyokinetic Coverter, I would go with 2x neutronium and one RCS or EPS.

Usually, cruiser captains that choose to focus on dps, doesn?t offer the same tanking capability that the tank centered offers.

Never said more tac consoles makes a better ship. More tac consoles just makes the ship deal more damage. And beams work just fine... provided you do a few specific things with them. But I can still take down escorts with her, and can make even other cruisers back off.

Since i hate the looks of the Excel, i use to fly the Mirror Assault Cuiser. For me, that ship is by far the best combination between BOFF& Console layout and a halfway reasonable good looking ship. (just my personal preference.)
Since it has a similar BOFF & Console layout as the Dread i think i can post my latest Build here. It is inspired by several PvP builds which i have optimized to my playstyle.
USS Explorer V

Deflector: OMEGA MK XII

The combination of Disruptors and the Plasma proc the Romulan Science consoles generate + the Plasma proc the Romulan torpedo does, works better than i thought. As i said this isn't a PvP build and it is far from being inished. I am going to switch to advanced Fleet weapons and i hope i can get my hands on a DEM DOFF.

I see what you are trying to do and I applaud it. I'm not a big lover of other weapon types rather then Phaser. I think that Federation ships should get power drain reduced when using any type of Phaser because its the main weapon used by the Federation, the same being for Klingons and Disruptors.
Plus I find Phasers to be much more entertaining as well as increasing the power of my Phaser Lance. I had fun yesturday, vs the KDF... They decided to bum-rush us at the start but I was cloaked... I spun round... decloaked and Phaser Lance Crit on a unsuspecting BOP Captain, it critted for 30,000k and took out his shield subsystem. He lasted about 5 seconds...
I then cloaked again and waited for the same BoP to come back and did exactly the same thing again. Ok, the third time he was waiting for me and we adapted tactics and had a really epic battle. So kudos to that KDF player for adapting and giving me such a good fight.
Fear my CRIMSON BLAZE!
Plus, being the flagship of my Fleet, my friends and I always giggle when I say over Teamspeak... "I'ma firing mah Lazar! BAHHHH!" I think a lot of people have got so caught up with what's the "best" in this game, some of them have forgotten to loosen up and have fun.

I like that idea very much!
Of course if i would fly a Galaxy -X i would use Phasers, but personally i find phasers in STO the least useful weapons. But as you said if Starfleet ships would get a slight damage boost, maybe something like an additional +[dam] modifier, i am sure many players would change to phasers.
If i it where for me, i would give phasers instead of its "knock out one random system, except shields" effect just an increased [crth] modifier, similar to Antiproton weapons. I think this would greatly enhance phasers usefulness and popularity IMO.

I've got several alts that fly cruisers, one of them being a tac in the Dread-X. It can be
quite fun to play. If you take the time, you can outfit any of the ships. Assuming of course
that the build suits your play style.
Ah, the age old question... cannons or beams, hehe... either.
I recently bought the Andortian Charal Engineer escort. Its a lovely ship but to be honest its just another pew pew ship with extra bling. Yawn. I got bored with it fast.
Ive recently gone back to using cruisers for most of my 7 toons. And its a revelation. I love the more laid back style of play. Ive been slowly building them up from scratch.
Engineer toon (signature vulcan): Mirror Assault cruiser, phased polaron beams XII and Romulan torps. Jem XII set.
Tac1 Saurian: Galaxy X Dread. XII phaser beams, fleet shields. def/ engines.
I'm working on a Jem Dread I've got 600 lobi, decision will be which one will In give it to. I have a Catian Engineer with no decent cruisers and close to completing Rom and Omega reps.
I do feel that Cruisers should have more firepower. heck Beams could be increased in power by a third easily. That would give cruisers the extra punch while allowing escorts to still be top pew pew. However cruiser captains can still make awesome battle wagons if they know how to build them right.
I find it annoying that cruisers (which are the primary mainstay starship in the whole of Star Trek) are frowned upon (it seems) by the game makers infavour of the pew pew look at me look at mee pew escorts. Make cruisers more attractive and you will sell more of them.
One final thing. I pugged a KAS the other day in my Signature Vulcan and my Mirror Assault cruiser. I was in a team with all cruisers. We thought we were asking for trouble. Wrong we completed KAS pug with mins to spare and all waked away with nice rewards. One of the best matches i had. We can do anything escorts can, just takes a little longer. Thats all.
Monkey see, Monkey do. Monkey flings Feathered Monkey poo...
I own a Fleet Ambassador named the USS Victory. You heard of it? It is probable the most BA Ambassador you will ever run into. My hull is at 59,000 hp, out tanking most Odysseys, and my beams and torpedoes have been ripping through shields and hull like cannons. I come in to the combat zone with high speed and let the photon torpedoes fly and like I was a bomber on a straifing run and after I pass the target I release the transfasic torpedo cluster mines and then I make the target pay for ignoring me. With my redundant self healing powers and shield tanking BOFF powers I am able to tank a team of five long enough to escape with friendly intervention or till the other team looses interest in trying to destroy me.
If the Fleet Ambassador is this BA then the Fleet Galaxy X better be twice as BA or more. I wouldn't mind if they made it a fleet tier 5 ship. I wish they would redo the the Fleet Galaxy because they still left it with weak tac setup. How can they justify the Galaxy being weaker than the Ambassador?
Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you, I am a Tac Captain.
snuck up on an Andorian Escort, decloaked, Phaser Lance, critted and then opened fire with my three DHC's on the front and High Yield Quantum and utterly obliterated that little fighter jock.
TBH it seems the cloak won it. Do you think you'd have been able to use the one-hit lance and the DHCs without it? Having to rely on decloaking with a one-hitter, doesnt seem like a good balance.

If its good enough for the BoP's and JHAS's that do one hit wonders... its good enough for us Cruiser people.
Not a critique just an observation, decloaking with alpha doesnt mean the ship is good, it means its bad
I understand what you are saying.
Assaulting a unexpecting target, without giving it a chance to fight back is hardly a indicator of a ships strenght in combat.
Maybe in sTOs PvP it's the only way to get a kill, i don't care very much. But it would explain why PvP in STO is not very popular.
I'm not criticising here other peoples playstyle, i just say why i don't like PvP.
For me Alpha striking is like stabbing an unarmed opponent in the back, most of the time several people at once, and as soon as the victim is dead you praise how good you are. lol.
Maybe some people who come from other MMOs have grown accustomed to something like that, but for me it's just dirty and not really funny for both sides.
I just don't really get why some people always claim the Galaxy -X would be a great alpha strike ship. It's got cloak and DHCs, granted.
But it's lance is a joke, much too imprecise and not reliable at all.
The developers decision to give the Galaxy -X DHCs while giving it just a Lt+Ensing tactical BOFF seems like a evil/twisted joke.
In my opinon, one never can generate even nearly enough Burst damage as a Escort with a Cmdr and a Lt. Cmdr Tactical, but that's just my personal opinion.
If i where a Galaxy -X fan i would insist the devs to give it at least a Lt. Cmdr tactical station, even the Fleet Science Vessel Retrofit for example has better tactical stations.

Just because you can equip DHCs doesnt mean that you should. What do you do while you're waiting to get out of red alert to cloak again. Run single cannons/ turrets, or beams.... DHCs are a waste on a Gal-X.
Check out this video here, myself in a Gal-X with beams and my fleet mate in a Gal-x with single cannons/turrets
Nice video... I rarely PVP so my builds are usually set to ESTF runs.
As much as I want a Lt. Cmd. tac BOFF seat, you can get away with the current layout. I managed to run 2 versions of DEM to penetrate shields more with phaser weapons before S6. Now that I have Romulan Plasma beams, I might give it a try again.
I know, unfortunately, due to the OP of Escorts lately, we need ever advantage we can get.
What do you do afterwards? Your low maneuverability and the lack of tac skills that support cannons on the dread make you pretty much useless after your alpha. Unless you can run away cloak and repeat (after a 3 minute wait I also have to add) you've got nothing. I'm not that impressed with the fact that you can alpha strike someone with the dreadnought. That's been done... the impressive thing is if you can do anything after that.

So yes, cruisers are viable damage dealers if built and used properly. But they still have a long way to go before coming anywhere close to a lot of escorts.
If cruisers get higher damage outputs, Escorts should get more hit points and survivability to balance it out. And where it would put Science ships I don't even know.
Why can't people just leave what is working instead of trying to fix and break it?
I'm perfectly happy with the way Cruisers are, I'm trying to show guys that Cruisers can work, it just takes a little time and experimentation.
Thanks for your suggestion, I will definitely take it under advisement.
Since it has a similar BOFF & Console layout as the Dread i think i can post my latest Build here. It is inspired by several PvP builds which i have optimized to my playstyle.
USS Explorer V
Weapons Fore: 3x Disruptor Cannons MK XII [acc]x2 [dam]; Romulan Hyper Plasma Torpedo Launcher
Weapons Aft: 3x Disruptor Turret MK XI [acc]x2; Experimental Romulan Plasma Beam Array
Deflector: OMEGA MK XII
Engines: Adapted MACO
Shield: Adapted MACO
Consoles:
Engineering: Zero-Point energy conduit, Borg Assimilated Module, Neutronium and Monotanium Alloy.
Science: Romulan Flow Cap MK X [plasma]
Tactical: Disruptor Induction Coil
BOFF Layout:
Tactical Lt: Torpedo Spread I, Cannon Rapid Fire I
Tactical Ensign: Tactical Team
Engineering Cmdr: EmPtA 1, AtB 1, DEM, EWP II
Engineering Lt. Cmdr: Et 1, AtB 1, EmptS 3
Science Lt: TSS, Hazard 2
DOFFs: 3x Technican, 2x shield distribution
I think this would greatly enhance phasers usefulness and popularity IMO.
quite fun to play. If you take the time, you can outfit any of the ships. Assuming of course
that the build suits your play style.
Ah, the age old question... cannons or beams, hehe... either.
Tac 2 Alien: 2nd Anniversary Oddy, antoproton build. Maco set.
Thats all.
It's bad when they do it too,
Not a critique just an observation, decloaking with alpha doesnt mean the ship is good, it means its bad
I know, unfortunately, due to the OP of Escorts lately, we need ever advantage we can get.
Check out this video here, myself in a Gal-X with beams and my fleet mate in a Gal-x with single cannons/turrets
As much as I want a Lt. Cmd. tac BOFF seat, you can get away with the current layout. I managed to run 2 versions of DEM to penetrate shields more with phaser weapons before S6. Now that I have Romulan Plasma beams, I might give it a try again.
That's been done... the impressive thing is if you can do anything after that.
i cant help but take that as a bit of a compliment, although doubtless it was not intended as such
i'm not down with the whole cruiser pilots vs escort pilots thing though. i love cruisers. i always play the single player story missions in cruisers.
i just feel better in an escort..they make me feel all warm inside, you know? all fuzzy like. happy to be alive..
