Basically the only part you got right was the usefulness for DOffs, which doesn't matter since you can do all that in 15 minutes anyways (if you're patient that transwarp won't amount to TRIBBLE).

Don't ambassadors (maxxed tier diplomats) get to transwarp lots of places on any ship they fly? And can't you still grind/max diplomacy through non-combat exploration missions (along with DOFF missions, making the grind even faster than when I ground it out on three separate characters way back when)?

ehhh they do the same thing in different ways.

Since I didn't spec into any real sciency things the higher level science abilitys arent that great for me, on my engineer they are wonderful, tbr at low aux is just a damage hose.

The Excelsior is an amazing ship, and having that ensign engineering slot is way more valuable than having another tactical ensign running tactical team. Probably the most fun ship in the game. Why you say?

Just pop in 3 purple tech doffs and run to copies of AuxToBat. Vola... my TT is on it's global cooldown anyway, and when I need a nice hull heal, I can use ET instead. For PvE just load up 3 turrets and a torp of your choice in the rear, and 3 single cannons and torp in the front, and set up your LtC tac to have TT1, TS2, CSV2... all on their global cooldowns, and you win. It's amazing.

Everything else you do to tweak (Omega/Rom rep stuff) it just is icing. Try using the rom science flow rate consoles, plus the Maco set to get the tetryon proc (and spec into flow cap). Add in disruptor weps and enemies melt in front of you.

It turns better than the other crusiers mentioned, and even 1 degree matters (plus less inertia), plus you get transwarp to everywhere. What's not to love?

In terms of PvE I almost never die in elite STFs, and output almost as much damage as the escorts running near me. A lot of people over-tank their cruiser builds, when it's not really necessary, or simply because they don't have a great BoFF layout (as this ship does). The Excelsior is that perfect sweet spot between just enough survivability and just enough damage to be a real threat. Regardless of what people say, fair or not, it's the best cruiser in the game (if you know how to use it).

Now start yelling, in your best Sulu voice, "FLY HER APART THEN!"

I thought the Intrepid Retrofit has the strongest hull ever built by starfleet. Ablative armor and what not.

That's the ablative armor generator. It has nothing to do with the sturdiness of the frame.

(It's the generator part that's important... while most ablative armor simply ablates (that is, it's destroyed in order to protect the ship), the generator adds more to replace the destroyed parts)

2 Important points. 1st is she costs less zen then the other top tier cruisers 2000 vs 2500. 2nd is she is one of the 3 c store ships fed side available to level 40 characters. The fact she is dog ugly is moot IMO. She is effective.

Most of you are placing the Excelsior on a high pedestal for its prowess in PVE...

How about in the real challenge, PVP? Excelsior Retrofit, compared to the Assault Cruiser Refit?

Excel will probably do better. Faster, more maneuverable (slightly in both, but it can make a difference), and as the fleet variants go, it's an even smaller difference, but excel still comes out on top since it can tank just a tiny bit better.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once. B)

It truely is a fantastic ship, I just wish there were a 2409 version....with an ens sci instead of the engineer.

Fleet Excelsior and Fleet Assault are the current proper cruisers choices to max your dps.

They are almost identical putting appearances aside. The differences are that one has 1 more engi slot and the other has one more tac slot instead, this is a choice of preferance.
The other is turn rate 8 for Ex and 7 for AssaultC while the latter has 50 more crew than the former.
All other stats are identical.Well i assume that everyone (almost) is going to use a sci boff at AssaultC's Lieut.universal.

Based on the above i believe that the Fleet AC should have something else a bit higher than Ex besides only just 50 more crew, for examble having more HP or Shields,to compensate for the higher Ex turn rate by one.

I just dont understand some of the stats that the devs are putting on in correlation with the ship size and class. How is it possible that the Fleet Ambassador has more HP than the Fleet AC or even the Fleet Starcruiser & the Fleet AC the same HP with Fleet Ex, or how is it that the Fleet Starcruiser doesnt have a LieutCom Sci but the Ambassador does (plus more tac slots). The Fleet Starcruiser should be the main Fed Support Cruiser. So it should be the one that had a sci LieutCom.

All the above are just random exambles and ofcourse a subjective point of my view.

I highly recommend the excelsior if you can put up the appearance, otherwise i prefer the visuals of the Fleet Assault Cr despite the less turn rate.

Newer ships displace older ones, although the Excelsior is probably the only exception to this rule. It doesn't have to make a ton of sense, since it's the developers making this up as they go along.

I'll say this much for the Assault Cruiser Refit: like the Excelsior, it can run cannons because it has sufficient Tactical boff slots to run at least two cannon powers. While the Assault Cruiser Refit does not quite have the same level of manoeuvrability as the Excelsior, it is not that badly off: it gets more weapons power and can potentially out-perform the Excelsior as an Auxiliary transfer build.

I've recently been rather taken with the idea of using the universal for something other than a science officer. Just for fun, I've rebuilt my Assault Cruiser from a regular beam boat to something that can go all out and hit 221 m/s with Evasive+Emergency Engines+Aux to Dampener.

I bought the VA Excelsior in the C-Store about a year ago. I ran exactly 1 mission with it. I found it to be utterly underwhelming. It has a LTC Tac slot, sure, but other than that there is nothing to distinguish herself from any other cruiser. She flies exactly the same as an assault cruiser, has the same weapon mounts as any other cruiser, console wise she's no different than the assault cruiser, and she has the same power distribution. She also has the famously touted useless ensign engineering slot. So I shelved her and went back to my AC at the time.

Then I bought the fleet version, higher hull, higher shields, another tac console...and just as underwhelming to fly. She's a boring ship, there is literally nothing special about her other than the LTC tac slot, the Transwarp and if you like 80's designs, she's the perfect ship for you.

Personally, I'll stick with the Regent, superior firepower, same turn rate (Don't fool yourself into thinking 1 turn rate is going to make any difference in broadsiders or with single cannon builds), and better power distribution bonuses.

Both. The Imperial is the ship for me. That added Ensign Tac gives me a slight bump in DPS every 30 seconds with a THY1 or TS1. And if you put on the wide-angle quantum, you can broadside with impunity and THY/TS while doing it. Sufficed to say, with my Imperial using BAs and the wide-angle, I can pop an entire group of probes in KASE before they get any closer than 6.5k. It's quite nice what a BFAW combined with TS can do XD.

Hit up 1st Aquarius and get yourself an Imperial. It has everything you know and love about the Regent, a "not as horrible as I thought it would be" skin, and a very nice 4th tac console. Also has more hull and shields XD.

So, I take it, you're only running one copy of Tactical Team? Isn't shield redistribution an issue in space PVP combat?

And what is "1st Aquarius"? Do they charge ECs for access to their fleet shipyards?

I have two Purple Conn Officers that cut down the cd of TT by 8 seconds each, requiring me to only run one copy of TT. And as for 1st Aquarius? They are a fleet that is giving out access to a Tier 5 shipyard for a specific cost depending what level of access you want.

And okay, I'll see if I can contact this fleet on ESD or wherever they are.

I have a question about the fleet Excelsior: does it also have the transwarp? and do i have to get the C-Store variant first to get it or can i just get the fleet version?
I can buy the modules with EC so there is a difference for me ;)

and my opinion on it: seems like the best cruiser for me at the moment. 4tac consoles and a good boff layout.

You can just get the fleet version. The fleet one is cheaper if you own the Z-store one, but it only makes sense to go this route if you're going to have more than one character buying the fleet version.

    1 character buying fleet = 5 FSM
    1 character buying Z + fleet = 2000 Z, 1 FSM
    2 characters buying fleet = 10 FSM
    2 characters buying Z + fleet = 2000 Z, 2 FSM

Loads of good threads on this very ship and even a youtube video or two comparing the two excelsior models and comparing and contrasting an all out cannon build vs traditinal beam set up. I purchased the fleet excel myself and was/am very happy with it personally, despite using my mobius more often than not. It tanks well and packs a punch. The transwarp drive is especially nice for getting around sector map.

I personally built mine as an all cannon build for fun and I can hold off probes and spheres happily on my own. Its easy to multitask in and can be a good addition to any team. As for what you build yours as, check out the Hilbert Guide and spec your skills appropriately. Here is the link for that video I mentioned above: Excelsior Showcase

    Hello,

I'm currently saving Zen for an Excelsior cruiser (unless I get a ton of recommendations against it). My question is, if you have this ship, what do you think of it? I've heard a lot of good things about it.

ALSO, if I buy the C-store version, (I want it to be account wide obviously) can I get the fleet version for 1 fleet module? Just asking because the fleet starbase price seems to be 5 FMs, (different from the other fleet ships) so I wanted to make sure the pricing is not different somehow for this ship. Thanks for your help!

    Good afternoon:

I know I am re-opening a very old thread, but I really need help from multiple folks as to go about this since I'm new to the game.

I am a Commander and have already bought the Excelsior offered with Zen-transfer purchase. Based on the first few bits of this thread it seems I can obtain a much better Excelsior unit than I have now. Seeing as I can't get a refit yet (even though I have the marks) the thread seems to state I can get a better unit.

I know I'm asking a lot, but if a few folks can tell me how this works, a quick walk-through and patience for a new player I sure would appreciate the hospitality.

Also, I'd like to get a "mentor" for this game. I promise I won't beat someone up with questions, but being an old TRIBBLE I am pleading for help.

    Thanks again.

Well, you probably bought the Advanced Heavy Cruiser. The "better" version is the Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit.

That is a separate purchase from the Store and it is that easy. :) The fine print is that you must be at Admiral rank to purchase it.
