How To Make a Tal

This is a basic video tutorial on how to get my alien's look in game.

I hope no one thinks this is to boost my ego or anything like that, but literally since I made this design in open beta, I've been getting a lot of friendly feedback regarding it (if you're wondering what my source of inspiration was, it's the song playing in the background on repeat). Neat way to meet new people imo :).

So I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that was kind enough to give a thumbs up in game, this is for you. I hope you enjoy the design as much as I did.

One day I'll finish the race's backstory, but just want to get it right.

^_^ Cheers!

PS watch in HD if you can

EDIT: 08/02/13

The TAL.... more powerful than the Asgard, the Kamino, mermaids, and the Deva from the 5th Element put together! Apparently lol Thank you all, I'm very happy that you enjoy the design so much, and of course you don't need my permission to make one... I'd be glad to see more of them walking around, who knows they might get to be a default STO race. One can dream lol

PS The following is a link to the official backstory of the TAL, hosted on my fleet's website, not sure if it's visible though. http://nova-coregaming.enjin.com/forum/m/8898135/viewthread/7053884-fleet-species/post/last

Just in case I'll post the rather lengthy info here.

How To Make a Tal Video
RACE: Quoria
Plural: Quoria
Singular: Quorian
Governing Body: The Quorum
Nicknames: The Tall, Tahl, Tal (short a)

Follow the video for step by step instruction on how to make your own Nova Quorian.

BIOLOGY

The Quoria are a species that begin life under water; from an egg, to a tadpole-like creature, and finally to their amphibious bipedal stage.

When compared to other species seeded by the Progenitors, the Quorias' physical evolution to their modern day amphibious forms was spread over millions of years. The Quoria have 60% of the latent Progenitor genetic tree active in their genes; this is a unique trait as most other seeded species have at most 10-20% of the latent Progenitor genes active. Their physical bodies do not possess anything more than some cartilage in the cranial area and limb extremities, rather their bodies are composed of several different fluid fill sacs. The brain of a typical Quorian is not too dissimilar from the Odontoceti of Earth (or dolphin cetaceans as they are more commonly known), except for the fact that the hippocampus occupies two-thirds of the Quorian rostral area; this fact might play a large part in their excellent navigational skills; they are sensitive to the resonance of song and the rhythms of life on a planet or ship.

Skin coloration varies as shades of blue (with perhaps subtle hints of other colors). Typically patterning on the crest portion of their heads are more varied in color, but follow a stripe pattern. To the untrained eye, most Quoria look alike, however their are subtle differences in crest size as well as other slight anatomical differences.

The gender is primarily 'female', as all eggs are born 'female'. However, when a time of spawning has come, a few will undergo a transformation and become 'male' so as to fertilize an egg cluster. This change is permanent.

PSYCHOLOGY

In their bipedal form, the Quoria are a highly evolved form of aquatic species come from what once was an ocean world. They are a wise and urbane people that possess a high 'emotional intelligence', a trait that makes them more capable to connect and commune with their environment and less sentient species. They work hard to be in balance and harmony with almost everything, from foreign relations to their physical environments. There evolution has instilled within them an incessant need to control their environments, often acting as 'shepards' to the natural processes and cycles of other living creatures. This attitude and form of psionic symbiosis is mostly directed to other aquatic species on their home planet, and not often directed to other member races of the Federation.

Because of their varied physical forms and metamorphosis, the Quoria see life as stages where one must explore all its mysteries before the next stage of transformation. It can be said, that when one looks up at the surface from beneath the waves, one sees the 'next world/stage' as a shimmering distortion. The Quoria view the universe and death as an important step before the next stage of ascension. Each stage throughout their known/documented life cycle is often referred to as 'Breaches'.

SOCIAL STRUCTURE

The Quoria are structured into various nomadic pods where a single matriarch takes the lead. They prefer pack mentality as opposed to a lone wolf ideal. Each pod is semi-independent but obviously the more long-standing or powerful ones have more say during group congregations and can act as a representative of their people.

HISTORY

600,000 years ago
■The Tkon Empire collapses. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Tkon_Empire
-> 80,000 years following the collapse of the Tkon Empire, the Quoria on Galorndon Core have begun forming social pods and can thusly be considered a civilization.

500,000 years ago
■Civilization first begins to flourish on Bajor. (TNG: "Ensign Ro")
Captain Jean Luc Picard stated in his log that the ancient Bajorans had flourished "when Humans were not yet standing erect". Homo Erectus existed on Earth from about 1.8 million years to about 200,000 years ago. Homo Sapiens began to emerge at about 200,000 years ago.
-> The Quoria enter an age not too different from Earth's Ancient Mesopotamia Golden Age.

200,300 years ago
The Quoria have become sub-light capable and begin to more thoroughly explore their home system; jumps in technology were in part due to a large cache of Tkon artifacts found on their planet. They discover warp technology, but are subsequently attacked and subjugated by an invading force (The Iconians). Progress halts and the Quoria enter a 'dark age'.

200,000 years ago
■The Iconians, a highly developed civilization, are destroyed in an orbital bombardment of their home world. (TNG: "Contagion"; DS9: "To the Death")
-> The Quoria, along with a few other rebelling civilizations, participate in the orbital bombardment of the Iconian home world. Shortly thereafter, Quoria leave Galorndon Core, after it was adversely affected by the activation of the Iconian Gate on the Dewan home world (now New Romulus).

What remains of their species, becomes nomadic and goes into a self-imposed isolation to recuperate their devastating losses. They survived in what is believed to be a multigenerational ship not too dissimilar from that of the Voth. The Quoria are few in number but are able to stay a few steps ahead due to their technologically advanced abilities. Quality over quantity as they say.

With the return of the Iconians, and the ever decreasing divide in technological capabilities... the Quoria realize that their long time of isolation is soon ending. More recently, they have settled on an artificial world, Nova Core, only reachable by a transwarp gateway.

OTHER

In 2366, a Romulan scout ship crashed onto Galorndon Core's volatile surface. The Starfleet vessel U.S.S. Enterprise-D was sent to investigate, and recovered a single survivor from the crew. In actuality, this was a partial cover-up created by the Quoria so as to keep an Iconian gateway hidden. They currently monitor Galorndon Core for additional traffic, but so far it remains an 'undesirable' planet in the eyes of the current quadrant powers. Interestingly enough, because of the Quoria's past communication and psionic symbiosis with the Gekli life forms, Galorndon Core remains a normal stopover for the space born species even though the Quoria no longer inhabit the planet.

Saw the TAL character in game, very eye catching. Reminded me of the aliens from Kamino in star wars which were always very imposing, and sleek looking. Nicely done

Nice species. And yes, if you want to take it further, you will have to make up Tal lore, maybe set up a website for it?

Why not tie it in with the Preservers? The theory of the 'seeders' or 'preservers' is confirmed both in TOS and TNG (the spread of humanoid live an odd 200 million years ago, or longer ago). There is little information on Memory Alpha, but a lot of information on Memory Beta, where they quote from all Star Trek sources. If you read up on the (sometimes conflicting) Preserver history, I'm sure you are going to find a great number of possibilities to tie the Tal in and give them a solid origin story.

At a few times in ancient history the Preservers had some dealings with mysterious species, maybe the Tal are one of them.

    Finally something creative!
Nice Alien/preserver Species you did here.
STO needs more creative people like you.
I'm tired of those Grenade carrying muscle giants we all see everywhere.

I'll definitly look up the preservers on the wiki, sounds quite interesting, although I wouldn't want to be all 'god mode' with the species :P. Was also thinking maybe the aliens that sent the vger probe would be interesting? whales + aquatic species? if any other mysterious species pop up on your lemme know.

ty although that you mention the muscle giants, I did make a caste variant of the species. maybe they might have a caste system that differs on visual appearance due to genetic coding? I'll post a pic or a video of it at some point :)

Did some reading and just kept clicking through the various pages in the wiki, very interesting stuff that helped to lay out some base work as far as background stories go.

    http://www.stowiki.org/Iconian
The Iconians especially caught my attention as they are dubbed as "demons of air and darkness". Season six was supposed to mark their return, probably in a similar manner as the Fek'lhr in their invasion of the klingon empire.

I'd like The Tal to be an opposites of sorts, but on a less grander scale in population perhaps; in this case I would say that The Tal are "daemons of water and light"

The return of the Iconians to the galaxy would mark the return of The Tal as well, having lived under a self-imposed isolation (dwindled in population) for the very purpose of awaiting the possible return of the Iconians and rendering what assistance they could offer in stopping their age old foe. Still some holes to fill in so any recommendations are welcome. I think I will model the species as a sort of genetic caste system species (not too different from the Gorn) wherein certain body types are delegated to certain tasks.

    TIMELINE Marking Ancient Advanced Lifeforms

    16 billion years ago
■The universe is formed in the instantaneous expansion that scientists call the "Big Bang". The "Big Bang" has been theorized to be caused by destabilizing Omega molecules. (VOY: "The Omega Directive")
■This point in time represents a hideout for members of the Q Continuum. The USS Voyager was briefly transported here by Quinn in order to escape Q, but he too had once used this hideout and was thus able to find the ship. (VOY: "Death Wish")
The age of the universe was given in VOY: "Good Shepherd" as 16 billion years. Current scientific evidence indicates an age of 13.7 billion years.
    9 billion years ago
■Hundreds of protostars collapsed in close proximity to one another forming the astronomical phenomenon later known as a black cluster. (TNG: "Hero Worship")
    7 billion years ago
■The Theta 116 system begins the process of becoming a planetary system. (TNG: "The Royale")
    5 billion years ago
■The star Sol begins to form out of nebular dust and interstellar gases. (VOY: "Death Wish")
■Female Q is born. (VOY: "The Q and the Grey")
    4.5 billion years ago
■The Guardian of Forever had been asked its last question (until 2267, when it told Captain James T. Kirk and Spock it had awaited a question "since before your Sun burned hot in space"). (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")
    ■The star Sol takes form.

    4.5 billion years ago
■The ancient humanoids, one of the oldest known sentient species, seeded the oceans of many worlds with DNA codes, directing the evolution of life towards a physical pattern similar to their own. The varieties of lifeforms that carried this seed code to fruition include the Humans, Vulcans, Klingons and Cardassians, and likely many other humanoid species of the galaxy. (TNG: "The Chase")
=> I'm assuming these are the Progenirators or however it's spelled... a little too far back for my species to have existed methinks, but given their humanoid form, it would make sense for them to have been on of the seeded species as well.

    4 billion years ago
■Q and Q begin their romantic involvement around this time. (VOY: "The Q and the Grey")
■The planet Pollux IV forms in the Beta Geminorum system. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
    3.5 billion years ago
■On Earth, in a region later known as France, amino acids combine to form the first proteins. (TNG: "All Good Things...")
According to actual science, life already gained a foothold on Earth 4.1 billion years ago. However, this wasn't theorized until after the shooting of "All Good Things...".
    2 billion years ago Edit
■Civilization thrives on planet Tagus III. (TNG: "Qpid")

    1 billion years ago
■The Slaver Empire is the master of all intelligent beings in the Milky Way Galaxy. The Slavers and all of their subjects were exterminated in a massive war which caused all intelligent life to re-evolve. (TAS: "The Slaver Weapon")
    Millions of years ago

    => Nope not Slavers

    400 million years ago
■In the Permian period, Eryops, the last common ancestor of cold-blooded and warm-blooded organisms, lives on Earth. (VOY: "Distant Origin")
■An alien ship of unknown beings is invaded by a magnetic organism. Trapped in orbit of Questar M-17, the crew disable their own ship to prevent the spread of the entity. (TAS: "Beyond the Farthest Star") 87 million years ago Edit

■The D'Arsay civilization launches the archive of their culture. (TNG: "Masks")
    65 million years ago

=> already too developed to be my species

■Earth's dominant reptile superorder, the dinosaurs, are wiped out when an asteroid impacts the planet. (VOY: "Distant Origin"; ENT: "Azati Prime")
■Some of Earth's dinosaurs survive the asteroid impact and continue to develop and name themselves the Voth. Sometime thereafter they leave Earth and travel to the Delta quadrant where they create one of the first interstellar empires in the quadrant. (VOY: "Distant Origin") 20 million years ago
■The recorded history of the Voth civilization begins in the Delta Quadrant. (VOY: "Distant Origin")
    1 million years ago Edit
■On Earth, the ancestors of Humans begin to distinguish themselves from their primate ancestors by their intelligence and reasoning skills. (TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon")
■Construction of the vast city around the Guardian of Forever, stretching out to the horizon of its planet. Spock estimated the age of the ruins to be "on the order of ten thousand centuries" in 2267. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")
    Indeterminate Edit

■The inhabitants of Organia evolve to beings of pure energy. (TOS: "Errand of Mercy")
Ayelborne said that his people had evolved beyond the need for physical bodies millions of years ago.
Hundreds of thousands of years ago

    ____________________________________________________________600,000 years ago
■The Tkon Empire collapses. (TNG: "The Last Outpost") ■The humanoid ancestors of Sargon's race colonized the galaxy. Their colonists may have caused, or influenced, the rise of intelligent life on Vulcan. (TOS: "Return to Tomorrow")
■Sargon's species is destroyed in a massive civil war when the atmosphere is ripped from their planet. Only a few survivors escape by preserving their consciousnesses in a cave deep below the surface. (TOS: "Return to Tomorrow")
■The planet Exo III becomes nearly uninhabitable after its sun begins to fade. The inhabitants resettle beneath the surface and construct androids to serve them. (TOS: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?")
According to Star Trek: Star Charts, on page 34, the Talosians became warp capable.

So I narrowed the species timeline to this specific bracket of Star Trek history :) Hooray!

    600,000 years ago
■The Tkon Empire collapses. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")
    http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Tkon_Empire
-> 80,000 years following the collapse of the Tkon Empire, The Tal have begun forming 'larger pods' and can thusly be considered a civilization.

-> The Tal enter an age not too different from Earth's Ancient Mesopotamia Golden Age.

    200,300 years ago
The Tal have become sub-light capable and begin to more thoroughly explore their home system; jumps in technology were in part due to a large cache of Tkon artifacts found on their planet. They discover warp technology, but are subsequently attacked and subjugated by an invading force (The Iconians). Progress halts and The Tal enter a 'dark age'.

    200,000 years ago
■The Iconians, a highly developed civilization, are destroyed in an orbital bombardment of their homeworld. (TNG: "Contagion"; DS9: "To the Death")
-> The Tal, along with a few other rebelling civilizations, participate in the orbital bombardment of the Iconian homeworld. Shortly thereafter, The Tal suffer the unexpected destruction of their home system as their sun goes nova.

What remains of their species, becomes nomadic and goes into a self-imposed isolation to recuperate their devastating losses. They survive , it is believe they live in a multigenerational ship not too disimilar from the Voth. The Tal are few in number but are able to stay a few steps ahead due to their technologically advanced abilities. Quality over quantity as they say.

With the return of the Iconians, and the ever decreasing divide in technological capabalities... The Tal realize that their long time of isolation is soon ending.

So what are the Tal like? System of government? Cultural habits and beliefs? Procreation? Physiology? Etc.

Excellent video, and a really good looking species.

I think they should have their own planet, missions and culture in game, just like the Deferi do. My crew would love to go and visit it. :)

I would liken a group of Tal to maybe a pod of orcas. Matriarchs takes the lead; I mostly say this because I've tried to make Tals on a male phenotype and they just lose all the elegance... so maybe they can only be made on female toons or perhaps have it similar to the females being taller and larger while the males be smaller and perhaps more aquatic and tendrily looking... rarely leaving the home planet. They prefer pack mentality as opposed to the lone wolf idea (the males eventually leaving the pod as they mature and go TRIBBLE around as bachelors). Government = various pods that are accustomed to life under water as well as life above it (so the city ship would probably accomodate both these options). Each pod is semi-independant but obviously the more long-standing or powerful ones have more say during group congregations and can act as a representative of their people.

Younger Tal resemble tadpole like creatures, molting to a more graceful and bipedal form later on.

Beliefs? Not sure, maybe they are sensitive to the resonance of song and the rythms of life on a planet or ship. Perhaps holding such things in high regard (like whale song).

Any suggestions welcome on this :P.

I would love to do that, maybe I can try to make a foundry mission... I'm not savy enough for it though but maybe at some point I'll figure it out.

It occurs to me the Tal are a species that begins life under water, and then continue life, at a certain stage of development, above water (or in both enviroments in any case).

If you are a tadpole, you know nothing of the world above water and you cannot see beyond the surface (or see mysterious shimmerings and shapes), once you become a frog, a whole new world opens up to you, all those mysteries can be explored.

So I'm thinking what that would do to a species psychology. They all have a revelation at a certain stage in life. Who is to say that they do not believe there would yet be another stage (death) where another revelation would occur. Like they would breach yet another surface. They might think that in each stage of life you breach a surface. And you will not be seen again by those still living below the surface.

So maybe they see mysteries during life, like the shimmerings and distortions you see when under water, when you look up. They see these as signs of the next surface. Maybe they believe this surface to be at a certain place in space (like a dense molecular cloud or stellar nursery). And when their bodies die, they are taken there and pushed off to float through the surface of that cloud, where it is believed their life continues to its next phase. Or maybe they go there at an old age, when their time has come, and they pass through it, instead of letting their bodies die. And if you die before your time, then you are pushed through.

It could be called the 'breaching', the 'passing' or the 'emergence'.

    Just a thought...

Very nice looking species! I also like the lore surrounding them. Have you considered making a Foundry mission about the Tal?

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

I LOVE the breaching aspect and will try to incorperate that into their culture.

As for making a foundry I'm trying, but I suck at it hard lol. Maybe if everthing's fleshed out, others can do it :P

I'm Admiral Yuung and I approve of this thread.

I'm not as creative, but I did my best to create a typically Asiatic male captain (as seen on the left). And so at 1.80m, I'm SMALLER than like 90% of the women on ESD. XD

Just finished watching the video and ZOMG how much did you spend on costumes and alien parts?!

If you play SWTOR, you'd notice how that gets boring, real fast. :heh:

Being short actually makes me unique. Also, my limbs move better, and not like I'm in the middle of a slow-mo action sequence. :P

Plus I made my Number One really really tiny, so relatively speaking, I'm still "kinda" tall. And I also tried to scale my crew according to the average of the races they were from. Now if I could make it, I'd have a scene where this really diminutive woman as First Officer is talking down to this whole bunch of aliens (and the odd human) who are all average-sized but way taller than her!

    Well, except the space dwarf.

The only one who got to be 6" was my Klingon CMO, but that's because he's Klingon, and a grumpy guy running the Department of Diagnostic Medicine. Gotta be tall and bullying to fit the fluff. :D

Too bad, I didn't sub at that time. I'd love to just go wild with all the costume choices.

Blah, I'm quite terrible at the foundry bit as I've tried and tried. Any suggestions on how to make a "water world" or have "underwater missions" ?

You could make a blue sky background, and instruct the player to wear an environmental suit. Perhaps add some FX to simulate water currents as well.

Starbase UGC is a great resource if you're having trouble.

    Canon

-Dewa was located in or near Romulan space. The primary was a Class M star. It had a magnitude of +9.
-Iccobar was located in or near Federation space. This was a binary star. Primary was a Class G star. It had a magnitude of +5, which was the same brightness as Sol. Its stellar companion was a Class M star.
-Dinasia was located in or near Federation space. The primary was a Class K star. It had a magnitude of +9. This system was quarantined.
-Galorndon Core: A geologically unstable, uninhabitable planet, Galorndon Core orbits a Class K star with a magnitude of +7. The planet is beset by constant electromagnetic storms that interfere with sensors and transporters. In addition, prolonged exposure to the planet's intense magnetic fields will result in synaptic breakdown. Away teams are advised to use caution.

In 2366, a Romulan scout ship crashed on the planet's surface. The Starfleet vessel U.S.S. Enterprise-D was sent to investigate, and recovered a single survivor from the crew.

tal is it possible that the galorndon planet... the geologically unstable one. Was more stable around the time the tal existed? and is it possible we could return to that planet with technology capable of stabilizing and reinhabiting the planet? and we had been in that process before our isolation. hence the "Nova" in Nova Quorian? maybe before we were simply Quorians.

ps just a thought if Galorndon Core = Core = Quor. then i think Quoria = plural and Quorian = singular
