Most of my toons are Aliens so I could choose my own traits, then my builds are around that.
If I where to change just one of my toons it would stuff everything, my bridge officer bonuses and my doff bonuses my ship wouldn't handle like it supposed to and all sorts of TRIBBLE.
Fed side, being Human with all Human Bridge officers and Doffs on active duty get a nice bonuses change the Human captain and you loose all that.
So they have to introduce drawbacks to playing an alien? Only 3 traits max? dillithium/ec tax? There needs to be benefits to playing an established canon race
My only concern w a respecies token is that there wouldnt be any gameplay incentive to play an established canon race. I wouldnt wanna tax the existing alien race a trait, but what about a buff to established racial traits, like a human borne "teamwork" would be more effective than an alien version of that trait.
Maybe even give established races a 5th trait?
Or maybe a dill/ec/xp boost inherent to a race as a canon only trait?

Thats just mho.
Each canon race has at least one racial trait that Aliens DON'T get, at all, ever.
However, most of these are ground traits(and the races that do get a space racial also get a ground racial with it), and some players think ground traits are useless....
And once again people are ignoring the fact that when cryptic redid the skill trees, nobody was given any opportunity to re-tweak their character's traits. That includes the species specific passives, some of which were rendered frankly pretty stupid.
Full character species rebuilds are another potential gold mine for Cryptic. They can limit any possible abuse by simply assigning a zen-point price tag that limits its usage. Accolades and ships / equipment that are faction-specific can be disabled while the character is in the opposing faction.

Yes, and of course because you don't want to use it, you're "strongly against" anybody else getting the option either.
Okay thanks. I wasn't sure if there was or not and I'll be honest, I didn't exactly look that hard.
Weather this thread gets merged or the Mods leave it alone I'd like as much player input as possible. This is just one of many topics that we need to, as a community, weigh in on. Especially considering Dstahl for player feedback.
And as I said. I'm completely for this Idea and would pay up to 1,000 zen to change my main toon (I have 5) into another species. Yes it would be Alien and no it wouldn't be for traits but for the level of customization in the Taylor.
I would propose this. The price is 1k zen and you can only do it once per toon.

There isn't any gameplay incentive to play as a canon species anyway. There is a gameplay incentive to play whatever species you picked in the beginning, before you knew anything about the game. Or to abandon your toon and create a better one before you get too invested in it. Neither is a good thing.
All the non-Alien species already have a unique trait that can't be taken on any other species. Like "Leadership" on humans. Of course, some of them suck, which is again reason to have a species change option.
Then again, why should there be gameplay incentive to play a specific species, canon or not? There are at least 150 members in the Federation, why shouldn't the players explore that diversity?
My takeaway would be to swap out situationaly useless or overall useless traits. For instance, on one of my toons I have Telekenisis which although fun, in its' current form offers little benefit or utility. If they were to buff it some I'd keep it but otherwise it has to go.
Wasn't there some talk about re-traiting going along with some sort of revamp of the traits?
does any other MMO allow you to change species?? If not then STO would be the first..
I'd even say to charge 500 zen and let players do it as much as they want.. Who cares TBH? It would add another level of customization. My Main is human and It wasn't till level 50 that i realized I wanted it to be Alien. Which is why my 3 alts are Alien. The 4th alt is a Furasan. So this is an Idea I completely Approve of and in no way see how this would really Change any aspect of the game.
Would be nice to have the option of saying "Hmm, what do I want to be today?"
While changing your ship and changing your crew is one thing, undergoing genetic reassuring and species transition is insane. Your base traits should be what you brought onto the deck when you walked into Starfleet Academy. These base traits should not be changed willy-nilly.
Also, there has to be some form of adaptation and adjustment to different races playing different careers on different ships. A Vulcan Science office Captaining a cruiser should feel different than a Andorian Engineer in an escort. And you should just have to work with that. If you don't like the toon, Flush out of the academy, (reroll) and start over with a new character.
Just my two cents. Sometimes you have to start over.
Live on Earth. Work in Space. Play with Dragons. Join the best add on to STO, the Neverwinter holodeck program! Only 14 GPL a month.
Yes to both retrait and respecies, especially when more playable species like Romulans and Cardassians are introduced.
I really don't get it why anyone would be against it. If you don't want it, don't use it. Period. What does it concern you weather someone wants to turn their Andorian into a Vulcan or their Alien into a real Cardassian? What difference does it make to you another person changes species and traits by token or deletes and rerolls?
People who want those tokens would be happy, it would create revenue for cryptic and there would even be another incentive to unlock playable races.
As others have mentioned, Aliens are already free to change appearances at a whim. Costume slot 1: Cardassian; Costume slot 2: balloon-headed, orange-skinned dwarf in an evening gown.
Dstahl: Now that we are working on a way to respec your traits, this is one option we are considering, but we haven?t made a final decision. We generally aren?t looking for players to be able to swap their species back and forth as easily as a respec
Stahl, that's an easy one. A Re-Species Token that can only be used ONCE per character.

I think the main problem with that is all the bound to character stuff that can't be transferred. Additionally, if they revamp any species or traits it is only right to offer a way to change to or from whatever got played with, if it completely ruins an otherwise good and established toon.
Having a total character respect token that would be like creating a totally new character but keeping all your stuff and level would be great. It would make them money and it would make players that decide they want to try something totally different (without having to create a new character then level him up and go through the long process of having to acquire good gear again for both your ship and your away team) happy.
Their should be no limit on how many tokens you can buy and how often you can change your character. I don't understand why anyone would be against it or why anyone thinks it should be limited to 1 time per character. If having this option makes people happy (would make me very happy) give them the option to do it as much as they want. Happy players is the most important thing with video games because happy players play more and support the game more. Having this option should make everyone that ever plays the game happy and anyone who would not be happy are the kind of people that likes knowing their are unhappy people.
Apologies if posted twice in this thread: I want to be able to respecies one of my characters--my alien "Cardassian"--if and when the Cardassians become a playable race. No need to do so for any other characters.

This is all RP-related, and not everyone RP's anyway. STO is a game and a time sink that's meant to be enjoyable. If someone is willing to pay Cryptic's required species or faction change price, then there is no compelling reason not to give that person more service options.

Item transfers are not an issue since bound items still stay with the character. Any faction-restricted items can simply be disabled or left non-equipable unless the character switches back to the correct faction required.
I would like to be able to have my KDF character assimilated. Female liberated borg Orions and liberated borg Gorn would make for interesting characters.
I'd be fine with getting a once-ever re-species on some of my characters. The big reason is that half the races in the game can't take the 'Elusive' trait, which is pretty much a necessity for space PvP (along with Accurate).
I don't know if I'd want to go alien to get 4 space traits (I think both my alien characters still have some ground traits), but I'd definitely switch my human to an alien so I could get Elusive, and get something useful in place of the human-specific traits.
A better solution would be to just balance the traits so they are all equally useful, or at least close, but that would take much more work than just letting players change their race.
As long as you can do it only once per char no matter what it's ok; changing your specie every week sounds rather silly. Once, ok. But not for the c-store races. There are too many caitians out there! It's supposed to be Star Trek online, not space furries online.
In my case, I created my alien (first character) before I ever learned about the C-Store. Had I have done that, I would have bought Playable Caitian, and used that for my first. It is something I have regretted for months now, and even more so after falling so dearly in love with playing as a Ferasan.
Actually, if I could change my Alien to a Caitian, I just might start playing Feddy again. I know I could waste away good zen on character slots, but that would require tedious and superflous grinding to make that character even half as good as the aforementioned Alien. After all, a full set of XII Polarized Disruptors is becoming more and more difficult to obtain. The best option would be to just change him to a Caitian, and continue on with him that way.
Also, I know that changing might get spammed in a similar way as respec. My remedy idea? Make this respecies a one time thing, like say, to celebrate STO's 3rd Year.
