The width of the doors is the real limitation. A Galaxy (or Nebula) simply wouldn't fit through the opening, nor would an Odyssey.

I'm not sure exactly how wide the doors open, but assuming STO's ESD is properly scaled (as it seems to be), a Sovereign or Vesta would *barely* fit.

What's to say that ESD didn't get renovated and the space doors enlarged to accommodate ships like the Galaxy? Remember other Starbases that were identical to ESD had space doors wide enough for the Galaxy to enter.

And the Galaxy is pretty much the widest starship the Federation had ever put into service, even into the STO era.

So if the Galaxy can fit through the doors, so can the others.

If Earth Space Dock is the same design as Starbase 74, then a Galaxy Class is perfectly capable of getting inside. http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Starbase_74

But since this version of ESD was basically conjured out of thin air by Q (to replace the original Cryptic design), surely it can be any size the game needs it to be?

Equating the large hallways of interior maps to the interior of the ESD exterior model is beyond ridiculous.

    thats a funny sounding sentence.
i just meant that most things are oversized, but not necessarily equally oversized.

    indeed

If we pulled those invisible walls, and you flew in, you would be hitting your hull on everything, your camera would be pushed into first person view

sure, things may get a bit hairy with the camera if you fly a big ship. and it would of course be crowded at first, but after a while, less people will go inside, and it would be super cool.

but a cutscene would be okay i guess...

I am to be funny. :P

But yeah, things aren't all properly scaled due to gameplay. Shuttles are larger, DS9 is larger, hallways are larger, bridges are football fields, and my inventory is small.

Yeah, people would clammor to try it out if it first came out and just hit the dock button instead.

Perhaps they turn on collisions when you try to go manual dock at ESD. And if you hit it, well you got a massive repair bill. ;)

yeah i'm sure most people would just click dock after a few days, but not me. i hit the invisible wall every time, and if i could, i would totally enter the spacedock, go to my bridge, take the turbolift to the airlock, walk through the docking tube thing, and emerge through a door in the shipyard... every. single. time.

I remember long ago during the talks of switching back to the classic Trek Space Dock, I wished we had an option to "dock" or to beam aboard.

If they do ever come up with a docking option with the cutscene or improving manual docking, I would like the entry to be a docking port similar to Star Trek 3. And the docking area would be a personal instance and we see our ship docked, then we zone into the normal ESD and enter in one of the Turbolifts.

I recall a couple of times battles that did take place between the pylons. One being the Klingon attack on DS9 and the Defiant threading the needle around the docking pylons and the docking ring, chasing BoPs. And another fighting JemHadar Fighters.

With a properly scaled DS9, it's not going to happen, but the currently scaled DS9 it is and to an extent mimicing those same episodes.

One time the mirror universe Defiant did dog fight a couple of Birds of Prey (Bird of Preys? I'm not sure what the plural of Bird of Prey is) between Terok Nor's Habitat ring and docking ring. The problem in STO is the biggest ships can do what the Defiant did, only slower. In STO the Defiant can easily fit between the habitat ring and the central core. A Runabout can fit between the reactor and it's support strut thingies with room to spare. Neither could have happened in the show.

In no other battles did ships get within the upper or lower docking pylons. Except for one or two that crashed into the stations shields in "A Call to Arms".

Can we just have a simple cutscene then? As a bare minium, it'll be a decent bit of eyecandy and add a little bit of immersion.

Yes, would be cool. Like this:

It would be cool, only if you are given the option to skip ala ESC key. I think after the first few times we get desensitize to it and it becomes annoying.

Great for the RP'ers among us

Oh of course! I'd never advocate an unskippable cutscene, it's one of the reasons why I hated MGS4. Personally I like the mini-cutscene you get on Fleet Starbase Response but after watching it for 5 times, I tend to skip it.
